- In a continuation of my Ultimate Altoid Survival Tin I put my kit to a test in overnight challenge put on by Campcraft Outdoors. Deliverables must be met to test myself and my kit.
• Ultimate Altoids Tin S...
I see Altoids survival kits all over RUclips, but no one really test them out. It’s really cool that you can actually survive with it!
When you pulled that saw blade out my jaw nearly hit the floor. Your kit makes my kit look like it came out of a bubble gum machine 😂
Thanks checkout the entire altoid tin playlist.

You turned this tin into Dr. Who's Tardis, it is so full of useful items. Well done.
This vid was from a year ago but man's still hearting comments, props to you
💯
Don't see many videos of altoid kits actually being used. Great idea with the saw blade and knife blade.
The saw blade and making a frame for it is brilliant honestly. Haven’t seen that in any of these micro kit videos
Thanks for your film , looking forward to part 2 . Greetings from Scotland
Hello I am also Scottish what part of scotland do you live in
This has to be one of my favorite videos I've watched on RUclips in a long time. I've learned a lot. Great video. Can't wait to watch part 2.
I've watched plenty of survival videos, your kit was so well thought out and original. The REAL saw and knife made everything so much easier than working with tiny flimsy tools and well worth the effort of making handles. You made it look easy.
Whoa. Super impressed. I love that kit.
Very cool and inspiring for what to do in a small survival kit. Thanks!
Its a good temporarry knife handle. For permanent you can boil wood to make it soft and hammer blade in, then dry it. You need to use burr with twisted fibers to avoid cracking.
Good idea
thanks for actually using it in the field.
The knife and saw blade is brilliant. That was impressive how you went through the list of stuff to accomplish.
Thanks, I developed an Online Course on the subject. Check it out you might like it.

i loved the improvised handle on the kife
BEST Altoid tin/pocket tin kit video i have seen and i watch A lot of outdoors videos.
the contents were well thought out and the way you pushed the envelope to include specific tasks to complete, i really dig that.
how its took so long for me to discover your channel is just uncanny.
but i have subscribed and looking forward to more ..
well done sir.
Thanks
Ha, was going through RUclips and bumped into this video again. The first time I watched it I was very impressed. Now for the second time, a couple years in-between, I'm watching again. Still impressed. The Knife, and especially the saw. Whoa.
Wow this impressed me, i subbed & must say its one of the most honest, real & informative videos on bushcraft that ive seen in SO long. Thanks buddy!!
Including the saw blade to build a full sized saw in the bush is an excellent idea, especially for a survival kit like this. I like the idea of building your knife scales, and its cool to see how you can make something so functional with some simple materials. It really shows that the more you know, the less you need. If I were building a kit I might just include the full eldris in its sheath with lanyard next to a small altoids type kit. It is just so comfortable and convenient to bring along already. Great video!
Nice video man!! Keep up the great work!!! 💪💪💪
Nice idea with using the tin for a measuring device!
Excellent job buddy you've packed a lot into a small tin 👍
Take care
Roo
Thank you for your wisdom
thank you for putting out this video, gives info that I been looking for! on building the bow saw and knife handle.
That anorak is snazzy. Video is overall chock full of great ideas.
You gave your body layers of wool plus boots, etc. A lot of folks don't think about that, or a lot of other things you discussed. Very important. Thank you for being honest about this.
That made me sub. 👍🏽
Welcome and thank you. This experience helped me develop an Online Course on the subject. Check it out

Button Compasses are good for navigating to linear targets like creeks or roads.
This is very impressive !
I know it’s been a while since you did this video but I have a idea for ya. On your modified mora Eldris blade, put a small hole in the forward and rear of the tang and put two flat top roofing tacks in your kit to act as makeshift pins. Pin your blade into one side of your handle so the heads of the nails are flat against the blade on the inside of you handle before wrapping the two half’s of the handle together. Maybe make the blade feel more secure in the handle without needing to do pine pitch glue or something. Still carve out the required internal wood material like you did of course.
That would have helped
I like the format of this survival tin challenge with having the deliverables.
Also like how you have a plan but aren’t so set on it that you aren’t flexible with the actual resources you encounter.
Nice work buddy.
Nice job bro be safe out there
Thanks im gonna subscribe for that
Good video will be waiting for part 2 jamie
Hopefully tomorrow. Thanks
More you know, less you carry
5.75 oz.
Love it, Like the saw blade in your kit. Typically don’t see people put something so light and compact in there’s, but so useful. For your knife handle was there any good sap producing trees around that you could have made a glue from to help secure the blade more?
No pine trees real close. It was a time thing more than anything else. I had projects to complete before dark that I barely got done. If this stretched into multiple days I would make some glue. Thanks for watching.
Good stuff bro! I'm learning a lot from you
excellent video brother. i took a couple things and applied them to my little kit. one thing that i do want to suggest is for a container, what i usually do is, get a fire going and get some good coals going and then find a log and split it down the middle with a couple wedges and a baton, take some coals and place them in the center of that log on the inside down the split and let them burn their way down for a bit until you have like a bowl container. fill it with water, then take some small rocks and put them in the fire and let them heat up and then throw them in the bowl with the water to boil. then you have good drinking water and a durable container. Just an idea that i usually like to do. great video. keep them coming. you got a like and sub from me man. I am going to be doing a video like this on my altoid tin survival kit soon too. cheers bud
Great work! i really dig this.. I got one issue, and that is, the using of the gloves, if you were gonna have the kit but not the gloves, you would be in a much tighter spot.. I wonder if you would try it again without them, and see if that would be possible...
I bet it would have taken you 3 times as long to give you hands time to rest, pushing on that sharp metal handle then getting that knife handle made..
really great
PPE is required in my filming contract. A stunt double wasn't available.
In my opinion the best budget tin, that fits in a pocket, and is practical, is a mini mess tin. Of course weight can be an issue you can get so much in that. Would you show us your optimum use of that? Fact is it can take relatively big knives like a Swiss Army Hunter, Workman, or a Leatherman. Maybe in fact the options are so bug you would not bother wanting to do it.
I have plans for other kits as time allows. Subscribe to keep up with my latest.
I've watched a lot of survival videos, especially ones with Altoids tin cans. This has got to be (hands down) the best one I have seen. Subscribed for sure! Please keep making videos that not only show what to pack, but how you actually use them.. great stuff!
Thanks. I have developed a online course on this topic. Check it out www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
@@BurningRiverBushcraft Thank you soo much!
That saw made me subscribe.
good job on the first day ..
Man you are very talented! I'd like to see what you could do with a coffee can full of stuff!
If I was in the woods with a coffee can I would hope it would be full of coffee. I can make the rest of the stuff I need.
You shore Killed it wid. That box never seen 13:37
Crock pot liner bigger/nicer choice than condom! Easily to work with, too!
Very cool. Is there a reason why you didn't use the saw to make the v-notches? Seems like it would have been faster and safer? I was worried with the amount of pressure you were applying with no handle on the knife blade that you might cut yourself. But great idea and great video. Thanks for posting!
This was part of an online challenge. Making a try stick was one of the challenges. I usually don't use a saw on a try stick so using just the knife was just a habit. Good point.
Great job on the kit. Saw blade a definite plus. A little tip... cordage being an essential, I would have unraveled it for the shipping. Still awesome.
The real deal here. 💪👍
Put sticky tape on back of button compass and put back on top of tin. Would suggest magnetic tape but dont know if it would affect compass.
The saw blade is great
A morakniv eldris is the best choice for a altoids survival kit.
Most people just throw a tiny swiss army knife and call it a day.
Eldris is a almost full tang fixed blade knife
It takes some modification to get it into a tin. I designed a knife to fit the tin with holes to allow me to attach a handle in the field.
Cool Video 👍
Thank U for the Info and the Link 👍
U got a new subscriber...
Best one out there, props to you!
Great idea of a blade-only in a tin.
Idea: cut an outline of the tang out of some 2mm-thick plywood and put it into the tin? (Then just cut to size to fit the stick. And the leftovers are tinder.)
VERY FRIENDLY
Wow very cool!
Seems like vandalism taking the handle off such a good knife to slip into a tin, but in fact it makes perfect sense as you need the best. However the Altoids tin is not the best
Online challenge. It had to be an altoid tin.

@@BurningRiverBushcraft you can buy mora knives without a handle
Thats awesome!
Hey guy it`s a so exelent survival kit
Could have hit clay a d quickly made a fire and pot for water. Just a thought loving the content
That would be my plan if I was there longer. I developed a online course on this subject that might interest you.
www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
cool!
...and the struggle is REAL, bro :) Great way to test your metal and your skills. Bob Jaeger
Thanks, it was a good test.
@@BurningRiverBushcraft yeah, looked like it. Also, not easy to do when you just worked all night, huh? I've been there.
Went to the Pathfinder school for a primitive trapping class, after driving 4 hours in the wee hours of the morning then running the whole day on fumes...next day didn't feel any better then had to drive home at the end. I must have slept for 2 days straight after that lol
@@WoodcraftLeagueOfAmerica sleep is optional.
@@BurningRiverBushcraft yep, usually lol
saw was awesome. do you really feel that knife built like that is more subtile than just a thin folder? maybe not enough room but just curious.
No room for a folder. Thanks for watching
Like to use a tuna can that has been opened with a side cutter.
SOO COOL
I’m shocked you got that blade in there and it did so well. Maybe I missed it or it’s in another video. But what kind of saw blade is that. It’s so flexible
I developed a course on Outdoorcore after this. I show all the details and a few variations.
www.outdoorcore.com/courses/how-to-build-a-pocket-survival-tin?ref=e2d546
This is all so interesting, you do a great job . I hope you do this again with a different kit or different terrain, season etc. Do you think you will do another altoid overnight?
I will probably do another one with a similar but different kit that will be available for purchase.
@@BurningRiverBushcraft do you have a rough guess of when ?
@frankyturrizo4240 The kits are being put together now and will be for sale by Adventure Survival Gear on Instagram soon. No time frame on the video
@BurningRiverBushcraft I hope you make an announcement when you are gonna reveal the kit's contents which I'm assuming will be a lot sooner than when they go up for sale .. I'm subscribed
loved this, putting the bow saw blade and the mora eldis blade in your kit was genius
I developed an entire online course on this subject at Outdoorcore.com The course should be released next week. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram for links and information
Nice, thanks.
hi - any tips on which type of band saw blade is best for hand use, cutting green wood like you do here? blade width, number and type of teeth etc. Also, would putting a "hard-fold" into the blade be a bad idea when it comes to cutting time? thanks!
These are 24 inch bacho bow saw blades. I have several tooth patterns that use the same frame. I mainise a dry wood blade, I also have a green wood and a bone blade. Putting the hard fold in the blade sucks, but it's necessary
Where are you getting this challenge from? I would love to see some other people attempt this.
This was on the Campcraft Outdoors Facebook group. I also just did a one stick fire challenge video from Midwest Woodcraft FB group. Here is the entire Altoid Tin Playlist. Be sure to subscribe to see my latest videos.

@@BurningRiverBushcraft cool, I may have to check that Facebook group out, thanks.
have you thought about drilling two small holes in the tank part of the blade and carrying a few small brads to hammer through them into 1/2 of the handle? This would keep the blade from moving in or out ad also from. moving side to side? Thanks
Yes I have. I will start with a blank piece of 1095 steel for the build.
Can you make a separate video on how to make that saw? I think that would be a great video for a lot of people
I actually developed a course on the subject. I cover building 2 types of saws and a lot more. Check it out.

Yes
Part 2, soon? Thanks.
It's uploading right now hopefully tomorrow
@@BurningRiverBushcraft Yay :) !
Okay so here's something I'm not understanding in the way of bushcraft... I'm please forgive my ignorance...
But when a branch is only one or two inches thick, why not just break it over your knee real quick instead of sawing?
I usually break firewood. If I am building something like a shelter or the knife handle sawing does a nicer, neater job
@@BurningRiverBushcraft Thank you so much for explaining! 😊
did you order that eldris knifr as a blank? I cant find a blank anywhere

What happens if you open the Altoids Tin and you find Altoids in it? What then?
I will be found with fresh breath
A Tobacco Tin is better, a mini mess tin better again
36 degrees and you need all that clothing lol I guess your talking F not C hahaha its 36 here in Australia most of the year and we surf n wear shorts n thongs,
Vert gold where can i buy the blade
I had to cut it down.

The saw blade is the cats meow something that is so useful not seen it before metal Billy can for your next surprise
I could do a lot with a billy can.
Thats some ugly water! Rotting leaves etc. PlSS YELLOW! Mmmmmmmmm!
I copied your idea of using a bandsaw blade in my tin. Realized ig you forget gloves, you can wrap the tape around one end of the blade for a handle
I believe I saw your post on Instagram.
@@BurningRiverBushcraft Oh cool! Yeah sorry I didn't credit you. I wasn't following you on IG at the time. Thanks a lot and I'll be sure to tag you the next time I steal one of your ideas. Which will probably be soon lol
Love the idea for sure but you literally clothed yourself with everything needed on a trip. So it's not a "altoid tin trip"
If you're not dressed for the weather there's not much hope for you.
It's autumn weather we're he's at so his attire is what one would be wearing if in the forest , it's perfectly in the realm of true altoid tin challenge, imho.
