This man, as has been said in many of the comments, is a credit to humanity. Non materialistic, knowledgeable, appreciative, non judgmental and a joy to listen to and watch.

The thing I really like about Ray is he doesn't even pretend he knows every little thing unlike pretty much everyone else. He always speaks to local tribes and local woodsmen to get that all important local knowledge. He is very obviously not ego driven and has a genuine respect for the surroundings he finds himself in.
Just what I would expect from Ray. Zero posturing, deeply generous, 100% fascinating.

Oh I remember some hard times. Freezing nights and struggling to keep warm or dropping into rapids far more dangerous than I thought they would be. But afterwards you do remember the adventure, with that little voice in the back of your mind "You got away with it that time"
I believe it's because his character with a love for the wild outdoors let him experience the adventure most strongly, thus his remembrance of those.
Take a indoor/city-dweller with absolute distaste for nature and it's likely they'll just remember all the hardships they had to endure and appreciate little else.
100 percent. There will always be hard times, those are certain in life. And sometimes, you don't survive it. Hearing his perspective as a person looking back on those times in his life, it gives me more hope about my life in general. I hope I will remember the adventures, too.

What an absolute legend! Ray is the most humble yet knowledgeable outdoors man I have ever seen. He seems like such a genuine, kind hearted and respectful individual who cares about nature and people alike. I can’t wait to meet him and his Woodlore team at the end of January for his annual Winter Bushcraft in the Northern Forest course. So excited!!

@@jasondalton6111 yes he does, but sadly its mostly a sales pitch nowadays. Ray has so much to offer in the way of knowledge about nature and now would be a great time to share it. I personally would pay a premium for access to regularly updated bushcraft videos but I don't have the time or means to attend one of his courses.
yeah unfortunatly he's not like a youtuber.... he needs people to make a show out of him .... but he knows so much, has minor celbrity, i dunno why he hasn't at least got a segment on countryfile or something

I have a special place in my heart for Ray Mears and even this brief breakdown of an eclectic selection of clips reminds me why. Profound, educational, funny and philosophical - and all with his true passion for nature and adventure shining through as always.
I remember about 15 years ago I was really buying into the Bear Grylls more or less docu/drama survival programmes. Then I watched some of Ray Mears programmes and could see there was was none of the fakeness and this man really does know bushcraft.
Bear Grylls is a clown. Les Stroud is what people should watch. Ray Mears, unfortunatelly for us, hasn't been on the screen lately.
This gentleman is a national treasure.
He is so humble. His knowledge and teaching is the best I have ever come across..
I think he should have a knighthood.

The day after my stag do, when I was hanging out of my arse and near death, I lay in my bed and watched a full day's worth of Ray Mears on TV. The man saved my life!

I hold this man in very high regard. As a British TV personality, though not as mainstream or influential, he's up there with Attenborough and Stephen Fry for me. It's just his subject matter isn't as popular.
Ray has always been a wholly decent guy and you can see that clearly here.

Love seeing Ray Mears a real hero of mine. He was never special forces or purporting to be a superhuman but just a man who has shared his skill and passions for us to learn from, thank you Ray you really are a legend in my book.
He's probably forgotten more than most Special forces know about bushcraft.

@@jplonsdale7242 I believe he does instruct on bushcraft which is good for our elite service guys as no doubt they learn a great deal, but Ray himself I do not believe has been in the services.
Always loved how down to earth he is and how grounded he is. No Hollywood b/s here. What a legend.

Ray’s absolutely THE Man. Certainly more so than ‘The Other’ rather narcissistic survival presenter, who he describes as ‘a showman’, and no, I’m not referring to the excellent Ed Stafford, I meant the other one 🧐
I love how he analyses the clips and doesn't talk bad about things and just seems happy that people are going out especially the last few films with young kids etc
Ray has been at the top of my hero list since I was a very small boy. I’m now a 35 year old man and he’s still occupying that spot. Got his books, went to see him talk, what a legend!

When I was 17 I got lost in a blinding blizzard for only about 4 or 5 hours. I got lucky and found a fence and followed it. Im pretty sure I would have never made it through the night. When I got out I slept like a rock for hours. I remember how hard it was not to freak out. One of the hardest things was keeping my emotions under control and it was only 4 or 5 hours. Also, proper gear is everything.
I came down to see what folks had to say about this guy since I found him so charming and insightful, love to see that he's clearly an absolute legend.

I never saw him on TV but he reminds me of one of my cousins. Quiet,charming and unassuming but definitely not someone to take lightly. His name is Ray also.
I remember this wonderful man realizing some guys in the Amazon had forgotten how to make fire, Ray handled it beautifully.

Your point about bear's eyes is spot on. At one time at Whipsnade Zoo, the bears were in a very large enclosure which was being repaired. There was one section where you could get closer to the side fence than usual. I was standing there when a large Eurasian Brown she bear came to the bars. She sat down comfortably, leaning against them (visitors were kept from the bars by a low fence.) She looked straight into my eyes. There was no anger, just curiosity. It was so much more intelligent and immediate than a dog. And you are right - her eyes were beautiful. Then, after a bit, she yawned and went to find her day-nest she had made in the bushes. A very special moment, and unusual in a zoo.
And a note to anyone making bear suits for cinema etc, she was very well groomed to the point of looking freshly brushed!
When I heard the name Jim Bridger in The Revenant, it instantly took me back to an episode of a Ray Mears show where he discussed Jim's bushcraft skills. Kind of comes full circle here.

I learned friction fire lighting (As well as loads more) on two of Ray's courses many years ago. I've never forgotten the lessons learned and still use the skills from time to time, much to the surprise of my friends. I now teach outdoor stuff to kids, including some very basic woodland skills and love my work. As has been said already, I would love to see Ray back on TV instead of all the sensationalist stuff that is pushed our way.

"What would Ray Mears do?" is still the first thing I ask myself for everything.
The answer is always: make a plan and then a fire, so it's easy to remember. Does mean I set fire to a lot of buildings and cars though.

I remember watching his shows and reading one of his books that I got as a birthday present (a couple of decades ago, a book that I re-read on a semi-regular basis) it really made me enthusiastic about being out in the wild, a feeling I for some reason had lost during my teen years.
I also remember watching Bear Grylls show, when it was new, and having to turn it off mid-program because mr. Grylls first off wasn't enjoying nature, only "surviving" in it and while doing so he killed a lizard or alligator, cut off a small piece of meat, which he cooked and ate, and then just left the rest of the carcass on the ground! Talk about the antithesis to Ray's philosophy! Well, I was appalled and since then I cannot bear (no pun intended) the sight of mr. Grylls!
Anyway; If mr. Mears should happen upon this comment, I would like to say that he's had a big impact on my life and I (and many with me) share his philosophy! So, mr. Mears; A sincere thank you for all your hard work! Cheers from Sweden! =)

Ray Mears is a beyond underrated national treasure. My late Dac loved him and I decided to go on a Ray Mears journey to pay some homage to two great men.

Ray's an absolute legend, always remember his series where he whittled his own canoe and went down the rivers in Canada in it. His Wildcraft series were the best things on BBC on a Sunday night
So pleased to have found this! My daughter and I always loved Ray's shows. We used to sit down and watch them together even when she was very young.
Ray Mears - Now he is a person I would love to spend time with = totally engaging, resourceful, and a kind human being.
My opinion on Ray is his calming no drama and realistic approach to his shows.
I did one of his courses, taught by one of his staff. Never met him until one rainy night when my tarp came undone and a shadow came out of the storm, retied my guy line in a second and said "You need to work on your knots." before wandering off again.
Ray was my bear.

I like Ray Mears. He's very knowledgeable and has great teaching skills but also that he was always willing to learn new techniques from other cultures and people around the world
Ray never needs to big himself up, he just invites us to share his curiosity.
I remember Mears' programmes. They were the only ones credible. He never presented himself as the expert but always respectfully asked local people how they managed to survive. He was taught their skills and occasionally Mears would contribute and show his own way of doing things. Great man, great teacher.
That's the amazing thing about Ray Mears, always pleasant, funny, sensible and entertaining to watch.

I've had a great deal of respect for Ray Mears for over 25 years. Up until viewing this video i didn't realise that he'd also been to Idaho, which is like its own ecosystem. Idaho's on a plateau and basically 1000 meters above everything around it and is possibly one of the most breathtaking and picturesque states in The US. It's been 46+ years since my visit as a young boy from The UK, but i still recall most of the almost two and a half months our family were there visiting relatives. Incredible memories that I'll treasure for ever.

I can relate to the Grizzly attack. Some years ago whilst on a hike in the woods, I was confronted. I made the schoolboy error of looking into the eyes and the result wasn’t pretty. Luckily the Shih Tzu’s owner was on hand and restrained the little bastard before I was completely overwhelmed.

What a top bloke! I love the fact that he didn't score. He just picked the good things, explained why they were good and how to make it a bit better. A personal story, to make it more relatable. Go to nature, accept the stench, stop talking, and live for the moment.
The very VERY best dude ever on TV. The guy who taught us not to try to escape the wilderness, but to become it until rescued. Learned soo much I'll hopefully never need off this guy. Wonderful.
Of all 'The Revenant' clips to show Ray, I would have loved to see his reaction to the native american building that amazing healing shelter for Leos character out of the material around them and with the hot boulders. That was a really amazing survivalist skill.

Teaching natives how to make fire without a lighter, which they had forgotten, and never faking a bunch of pathetic nonsense.

So many people that teach you survival make the mistake of convincing people that being in the wilds is a death trap. Like, "I'll teach you how to stay alive and escape this torment."
Ray makes me think, that being in the wild is where we came from. We've just lost the ability to exist there like we used to. A reconnection with nature would be an uncomfortable process, but what an amazing personal achievement it would be, to know that you could exist in the wilderness, without any of the trappings of modern life.
Definitely going to track down that book of yours Ray. =)
