THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this video! I had bought this exact pen for my ducks and it was driving me mad trying to figure out a way to make it mobile, nothing I tried worked. I was about to give up until I found this video! I really appreciate how detailed and well explained everything was. Can't wait to try it, my ducks will be so happy!
We're on our 3rd and 4th border collies, and they are the best dogs I have ever had. Most reviews call them the smartest dogs in the world. They are very sweet, playful, and are one of the best Frisbee dogs you will ever find. They all have the instinct to herd . Maybe that one was trained to because he is a little intense.
Exactly what I had been wanting to know how to do. I'm going to do this with my trampoline tractor so will have to adjust for it being round but I think this could still work very well. Thank you for the details on supplies as well!
If you do decide you want four wheels that's fine. If you are going straight just pull/push it. If you are turning just pick up one end. The nice thing about this is you can steer from either end!
Using cardboard under the drilling area is a simple thing, useful tip. Every little bit helps. Mostly it’s just seeing a problem in advance and planning to prevent it. Thanks.
Nice job! My coop is bigger and heavier so I went with 4 wheels. If you have trouble keeping pneumatic tires at the correct pressure, you might want to put Slime protectant in them. Every tire on the farm has them (not cars). I love that dog, always working!
When you're drilling metal you could also use a magnet to catch shavings I use a similar tractor for rabbits but when I used the wheels some of them would escape so I used old ski's
I have a coop very similar to yours. I just finished it today. Put a rope on it and didn’t even need the wheels. Moved it with no problems. Only moving one space at a time. Now if moving across the yard, probably better to have the wheels for ease.
This is great! Thanks Eric, you saved me from having to use the trial-and-error method. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this! FYI, used your link for the wheels, they are currently unavailable on Amazon.
Get axle sized bolts to save cost is a possible option. Also, nylock nuts will eliminate all of those lock washers. With constant rotation, those lock washers are subject to failure.
Axle sized bolts would not work because the pipe is too small in diameter. There would not be enough strength in the pipe material to support the tractor.
Good instructions! I have wheels that are attached and get engaged when I lift the chicken tractor, but if I’m on a little rise in the ground I have to lift the coop too much. I might switch to your design or just wait until I build my next bigger chicken tractor. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve been using really ancient technology by using a galvanized steel fence post to roll it around the yard but like approach much better. What did you do with the bar spot? Did you reseed with grass seed or did you let it come back naturally? Turn it into a garden?
We plan on making a few chicken tractors using this coop and the modifications you’ve done. Wondering if you ever add additional tarps to protect from the weather. I’m worried about wind blowing it over if we add any more tarps and it isn’t staked down. We are in Indiana, so plan would be to add nearly full coverage of tarps for winter weather, put deep bedding in the coop and stake it down to be stationary in the winter. Also trying to think of other ways to protect from predators since we will be moving the tractor every day for our broilers and moving a fence along with that doesn’t seem fun. We will have an electric fence for our layers and let them out of the coop to pasture but man, it’s a pain to move the fence. In summary (haha) - thoughts on wind/tarps if not staked down? And any other suggestions for predators?
Awesome. The only thing it would change is from the wood lever to square metal tube. The wood rotted out too fast. I did end up putting more tarps. This model of coop was heavy enough to withstand out winds here but maybe not in other places. You are right, those fences are a pain to move. I don't have any other predator solutions.
I got the 10x20 metal coop. I put it on top of 4x4s. I am going to use the front end loader on my compact tractor to move it, no wheels needed. I have to build it stout to keep out raccoons and coyotes.
I’m so glad I stumbled across this! I’m using a pvc pipes to make a chicken tractor. Never done this before but it’s leftover from kids play area and it’s already built! Add chicken wire and maybe add a nesting box or three. What size wire should I use if area is prone to snakes?
Hello. If you are worried about snakes you should encase the entire thing in hardware cloth (including the floor). Snakes rarely bother adult chickens though. They just try to sneak away with eggs.
Hi This is a great video. Can you do one specifically for the wooden lever? With exact size and components used? I am not very familiar with all this; the details are critical for a newbie like me. Thank you.
Very nice design. Could you add the bar steel to a portion of the perforated bar steel to keep it from twisting and make it stronger? I'm thinking that would work well. Or, even easier, a second piece of the perforated bar.... just bolt it together. 😊
Move it before they eat half the grass. Then its not hurting the grass and its recovery is much better and faster. You might need to seed that spot so weeds not take over
Do you still use this same coop? I have one of the squears dog kennel ones with chain link that I want to try putting wheels on like this. Was wondering if this coop in general is still working out for you
@@CountryLivingExperience why did you switch to a new one? I'm kinda wondering if I should bother putting wheels on this one or just go ahead and build a new one that's better
@@BRWfilms I am keeping this one for the chicken tractor features of it. The new coop is larger to accommodate all of my flocks together and it also acts as the solar component space for my barn. I have done 4 videos on the build already.
I just bought these same wheels from Harbor Freight on sale. I do have a question on sizing though because I could not for the life of me find either spacers to fit the bolt or hole on wheel. I thought you said you used 5/16 bolt, is that right?
@@CountryLivingExperience Ok thanks. I thought I’d have to do that. Do you remember the store name by chance? Or the dimension of the spacers? Like inside and outside dimension? I see some at lowes that are 3/8 inside 1/2 outside for nylon and 1/2 inside 5/8 outside for steel. This should fit the wheel and a 3/8 bolt. Do you think a 3/8 bolt would work instead?
Of corse I do not know how much land you have but if you would move the coop/run once a day or maybe 2 days I’m betting you will find your soil and grass health will dramatically improve witch will also be better for the chickens not knocking you or how you do things just what I do we do Rotational grazing in his improved our soil and our grass so much
You could have 1 at the rear and still be able to steer it if it could freely rotate. Chickens don't eat grass. They eat the stuff in the grass. Chickens don't get the same thing out of grass that goats and cows do.
That pacing dog in the background makes me nervous. They have to be the most nervous dog breed that I've ever seen. I got one of these pens. Do I need to build a shelter for them to sleep at night or they just stay in the pen?
I put a tarp on the top, added a roosting bar, and put an electric fence around it for security. They have been there ever since.
I’ve been using really ancient technology by using a galvanized steel fence post to roll it around the yard but like approach much better.
What did you do with the bar spot? Did you reseed with grass seed or did you let it come back naturally? Turn it into a garden?
The grass grows back fairly quickly. I scrape off the top layer of enriched dirt for the garden.
I use old oil field sucker rod and cattle panels and mess wire screen on sides and 1 inch chicken wire on top
