One of the best modern jazz players today. And one of the nicest person I've met.
Have u ever met michelle obama ? I dont think so.
@@franckmarronier130 Both are kind men, no need to compare.
Can you please tell me the name of the music he's playing at the beginning? Thanks!
@@franckmarronier130 I haven't met Michelle Obama. If you read my comment I said nicest person I've met. Johns a master of the instrument.
@@enriquefranco4216 Hola Enrique, im sorry amigo I wouldn't know that song. I know John has a play along CD. I could assume its a song from that.
Goose bumps from Mr Riley
So honest and open, a true gentleman.
I'm not a jazz drummer, and I'm barely drummer anyway, but I find this interview and the presentation by John Riley (whom I'd never heard of) to be exceptional and applicable to any creative craft. He is a wise and articulate teacher of ... process. Bravo!
love that he encourages listening over bookwork ...
john riley is amazing player and teacher! mad respect! Also a hell of a nice guy too!
It’s amazing how many musicians, even jazz musicians, were influenced by the Beatles to get into music. I’ve just recently discovered Mr. Riley and his music. Good stuff!
Thanks 🙏 Tom Monk for your feedback. Yes, John is a truly inspiring personality. We recorded a total of 4 courses with him. You can get free access to all of them here:

Every answer is full of valuable information, thanks Mr Riley
Thankful to have studied with John for 3 years! Great player & and a great guy!
Very interesting. Very intelligent man.
Such a joy listening to John. Many thanks
What a great interview. Great production and, of course, great drumming and heart from John. Cheers.
Beautiful smooth set playing, its obvious you have mastered your craft.
John Riley is the best. I took one lesson from him it changed my life
What a great drummer and teacher so much intellect!
Thank you.
Not only could I listen to him play all day, but I could listen to him speak all day! Much, much respect to a monster drummer and educator! Cheers from Montréal John Riley!
Genius love it
as a teacher, I totally got that point. Some of the talents, they don't really need someone, they are on their mission and somehow they will get there.
An honest and genuine artist a true master.
I could listen to JR talk about music all day
truly a Master, so crystal clear and wise.
One of the nicest men have heard and really larger than life
Absolutely a big drummer!!!
I've had a few lessons with John and I can tell you it's very much worth it.
What a legend! Can't wait for the series!
You don't need books or someone to show you the way, you will figure it out yourself. Although insight into drum notes does provide knowledge and teachers give you keys. Although they are equally good at using the language of the environment as inspiration for drumming. For example, I had various canvases hanging on the wall and I used the images on them as parts of my kit (for example, a tall tree was a tall cymbal, a mushroom in the photo as bass etc..), I arrived at a wonderful sound and expression. of course this was a snapshot. and difficult to repeat, although it was very entertaining.
This is awesome. I'm currently majoring in jazz percussion, and my teacher is a super cool guy. He teaches very similar to the ways that John Riley describes his lessons and experiences.
.Another great video with John Riley. Two big thumbs 👍🏻👍🏻 up from American One Productions band rehearsal and drum set practice studios in New Jersey.
I love the way he speaks!
Absolutely drum asmr 😉
Great video. I'm so grateful for John Riley's books, leadership and mentorship via his videos, etc. He's an amazing drummer/artist, always an inspiration and a true class act.
A true Master teacher and Player, one of the very best
Those cymbals sound awesome.
Definitely a terrific jazz teacher and drummer.
Brilliant! Yes, the mark of any good teacher is that they have the ability to bring the student to the point of not needing the teacher. They equip the student with the tools necessary to achieve their goals on their own. If you think about any great player, you think of the unique qualities that make that player great but oftentimes, that player's early influences and perhaps even teachers are overlooked because that player has combined all of those influences and brought his/her art to an entirely different place. I often consider the many players (myself included) that came from the "school" of Alan Dawson...or Joe Morello, Riley and many others. So many wonderful and musically unique players that share, in part, the same lineage in their influences and development but ultimately established their own voice. Thanks for this post. Very inspiring!
Amen !!!
Awesome
Very good content. Thank you very much.
Beautiful lesson....😃
Impressive musician!
Really encouraging!
wonderful interview
Amazing John & great job OLTV!

@@ArtOfDrumming I certainly do appreciate you and all that you do!
My nephew studies with John at Kotztown State in Pennsylvania
I think it is funny that the more academic types of drummers rarely mention elvin jones. Because his playing rebelled ir bent the fundamentals of jazz drumming. But he sounded much more interesting then the usual suspects :) to me at least. Anyways, many thanks to john riley and his teaching
it's good to keep the following charlie parker quote in mind: "You've got to learn your instrument. Then, you practice, practice, practice. And then, when you finally get up there on the bandstand, forget all that and just wail."
igor domijan I guarantee if you mentioned Elvin Jones to John Riley, he'd respond with nothing but respect, admiration and awe. Riley seems to have followed the clean jazz drumming approach similar to Jimmy Cobb but that doesn't mean he is somehow "against" Elvin.
In Steve Smith's dvd with John Riley "Jazz Legacy - Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants" they have a whole section of them talking admirably about Elvin Jones and analysing some of his key phrases and general playing approach.
Although you do make a good point. when I think about it he isn't referenced in academic drumming and jazz teaching as much as you'd expect, based on the massive influence he has had on it
@@highnumber9494 Of course, I am reffering to the general lack of studying his phrasing and "open" playing in the academic sense. I also agree that, for beginners in jazz, it is more important to learn the clean approach first, and then try to "just wail" it :)
igor domijan - I purposely avoid Elvin Jones. I much prefer to study someone like Art Blakey. It isn't because I have anything against Elvin, I just find his stuff too difficult and too advanced. Best to learn algebra before you tackle calculus....
dude has wisdom
HUMBLE
