Excellent lesson and explanation of what you're doing. Keep them coming, please. I'm currently working through this book but haven't got a far as page 36, but I think I'll try applying your concept to the other pages, where feasible.
    Thanks.

Thanks for posting. This is a brilliant way into working on these solo phrases, which I have previously found a bit impenetrable and overwhelming

I am glad this method helps :-) I had the same "struggle"! That´s why I came up with this idea. Maybe it´s not the most musical approach, but it helps to get in contact with this big amount of material.......all the best! Derek

... What I like about this process is developing the small precision percussive sound. Note: remember accenting is another skill set that you apply to this small precision sound....🎉

Hi Derek. Thank you for this delineating 1 bar practice tip, very helpful.
I have a Q i noted you at times seem to play open handed with both LH-RH on hi- hat side Ride, yet the kit is set up as Right handed! Please might you explain? as I’m Right footed but Left handed, & I’ve not really focused enough as i can at times get ‘tongue- tide’ especially soloing! Clarity might help? Thank you. Josie

      Hey Josie!
Thank you for your message 😊
I’m right handed leading with my left hand on a right handed kit…..that’s the way I have learned it in my small village back in the 80‘s/90‘s…..
I lead grooves with my left hand but for fill-ins or soloing I lead with my right hand…..does that makes sense?🤪
      All the best from Berlin!
      Derek

      HNY by the way!🎉 it Kinda makes sense, however right handed school of thought usually means & implies that one leads with ones ‘dominant’ hand;
      (R’handed-R’kit setup)
      (L’handed-L’kit setup)
      But some drummers
      Play what is called
      ‘open handed’ when
Playing hi-hats & snare grooves, wheres as traditionally RH crosses over left hand to play
hi-hats. But i noted you played ‘Open Ride’ with your left hand which is actually quite cool for a left handed player playing a R’kit, if that makes sense!🙃thanks fir taking the time to reply. Heres to all things Drums🥁👍🏻!
