  • The Hudson Music team was on hand once again to capture all the action as the Modern Drummer Festival 2011 took place at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey.
In a program packed with amazing performances and insightful educational segments, Gil Sharone (Stolen Babies/Dillinger Escape Plan) expands on concepts found in his Wicked Beats DVD, Trevor Lawrence Jr. (Herbie Hancock/Dr. Dre) performs in hip-hop and fusion styles (with guest percussionist Taku Hirano), jazz innovator Jeff Tain Watts presents an incredible set with his stellar quartet, prog/metal star Aquiles Priester performs a blistering set of songs from Hangar and Freakeys, and, finally, drum superstar Horacio El Negro Hernandez performs with The New World Order, an all-star world music group put together just for the festival. In addition to the main show, also included are two enlightening master classes.

This is just such classic John Riley. A dry, professorial explanation of technique followed by an incredibly thoughtful meditation on the nature of artistry, competition, and self improvement. He is an absolute treasure.

What I find particularly helpful with this kind of exercises is to pay great attention to the evenness of articulation and quality of tone when moving around the drums. Just like playing classical timpani pieces. With quality of tone comes relaxed technique.

Two things are necessary to learn this material: what to do and how to do it, with how being the most important.

John Riley also analysed the time signature of a track by an obscure British band during this Modern Drummer session - anyone know what the band was?

He don't really want that we understand , like a real modern teacher ! Don't repeat the pattern slowly for sure ! So you are so different John ! Go to slowmotion to note the pattern , it is so human !

There's more to this video than what is being shown here. You have to buy the video to see where he begins and where he ends.
