I agree that Louis deserves sympathy but he had so ! many ! chances ! to fix things that he just passed up, his financial ministers turgot and calonne for instance could Louis stood up for them could've very likely prevented the revolution, he could've told the other financial minister necker to not borrow loans at high interest rates, could've told marie antoinette to not spend money so lavishly, could've minded his language during the Paris Parlements, could've disclosed government revenue during the Assembly of Notables, could've treated the third estate with slightly more respect during the Estates-General (he made them wait for hours in a shabby place and didn't even let them speak to him historians compared his treatment of the third estate delegates as 'sullen schoolboys'), could've just given the third estate another vote, could've not called royal troops to Paris which caused the great terror, could've not thrown a party while Paris was starving which caused the women's march on Versailles, could've not tried to escape to Austria when people are already doubting his support for the revolution. He is a good man aside from how weak in mind he was. And honestly all those around him I argue would be more fit to rule.
