I find the smiles truly emotional. I guess that's because traditional and official portraiture so rarely shows a smile or a warm expression. Seeing these people smile feels like a true gift. From the writing, research, editing, and recreations, you both do fabulous work.

My favorite thing about Richard III is they did the forensic reconstruction and didn't tell them who it was supposed to be.. when they were done it was obviously, unmistakably Richard III. which among other things tells you how accurate medieval portraits were.

This reconstruction may even be a bit more accurate. The one from his skull would probably not take into consideration the strain he was under those last two years, between the deaths of his family and the ongoing attacks by Henry's faction. The portrait and this image show that strain's effect. But Shakespeare's fantasy will never again be the true "portrait" of young kink Richard III.

Not going to lie, I’m not launching an epic war for that Helen of Troy. Was there a cousin we could opt for?

Beautiful and amazing work, as always. I wonder if it's possible to do one of my favorite Plantagenet, King Edward the first? I know there are very few likenesses of him though. Also Lucrezia Borgia unless you've already done her. Again, beautiful work!

+robynsegg Not me, I don't like artists doing "modern interpretations".of historical people. They are after all not modern people and I find it disrespectful to them.

According to Richard III s DNA, he had golden hair like the other Plantagenets. I don't know why he was portrayed with dark hair in the contemporary depiction except to wonder if the pigments darkened over the centuries.

None of the ‘portraits’ known to us of Richard, as Duke or king are from his lifetime or near lifetime much less known to be by artists authorized by him or his House to paint him so whomever left those paintings, or copies of the ‘originals’ is at best guesswork for us - especially with all the efforts made to raise the shoulder to imply a hunchback etc - some portraits show Richard with such a cramped, pinched, sour face I initially mistook him for Henry of Richmond (Henry VII)

      @@serahloeffelroberts9901Kind of... 🤷‍♀️
Him having blonde hair doesn't automatically mean he had light coloured hair. Dark blonde hair can be quite a bit darker than some shades of brown. That said, apparently the type of blonde Richard's hair was supposed to be according to the DNA, tends to darken as the individual grows into adulthood. So, as a young child, he likely had light blonde/golden blonde hair, which darkened as he grew into an adult and became a dark blonde. And that's actually what we see in the portraits of him, even though they aren't contemporary but near-contemporary copies. The exact shade of a haircolour, unfortunately, cannot be determined by DNA. So, how light or dark his hair was ecactly in adulthood, is anyones guess.
Anyway, according to my former hairdresser, while most people consider blonde hair as light in colour and brown as darker, it's more about the undertones. Blonde is cool toned and brown warm toned, but neither has anything to do with how light or dark the hair might be.
