At that point part of Tybalt wanted to die, otherwise he would have pulled the triggered and killed Romeo. He believed Romeo's words and knew that someone would have to die, and he chose his own death. In this version of R&J Tybalt seemed like he had a lot of guilt for Mercutio's death.
@@alexmilburn4261 I definitely agree this Tybalt felt a lot of guilt and despair, it's plain on his face once he realizes Mercutio is dead. He never meant for Mercutio to die. In this scene, he tries to answer Romeo back, but it doesn't sound convincing. Maybe part of him wants to die, but he also fights for his life. Only he's too shocked, scared, and weakened, and Romeo is like a force of nature.

Mercutio's soul is but a little way above our heads, staying for thine to keep him company!! Thou wretched boy shalt with him hence! Either thou, or I, or both must go with him! I imagine Mercutio actually floating above them watching. Definitely one of the most dramatic scenes in the movie. Next to Mercutio's actual death where he curses both their houses. One of my favorite movies of all time. Love it!
I hate to say it but tybalt was the best part of this movie. He was crazy and super unpredictable. And I’m kind of sad that he was killed. Lol the one moment in the whole movie that he showed mercy he was killed for it lmao
Yeah Tybalt was a great character, but I don't think he showed mercy in this scene. He was simply overpowered by Romeo's rage. You can tell how scared he is. He lost a lot of strength when he realized he had killed a man. After that he changed.
Mon Mothma No, he showed mercy. As you said, he just killed a man. Not any man, but Romeo’s friend, who was like a brother to him. I believe that as he saw the pain and suicidal rage in Romeo’s face, he couldn’t bring himself to murder him, especially as he recognised (as somebody with 5 brain cells) that the whole cause of that pain was his own actions and provocations. It’s a nice little twist on the character of Tybalt, especially considering in the actual play he is killed in a life or death contest with no indication that he held back or showed mercy.
@@holypaladin4657 Your interpretation is interesting, but I guess there is no definite answer since, as you say, the play doesn't indicate how he feels in this moment. To me he definitely looks scared and it doesn't look like he has enough emotional control right then to make a conscious decision to show mercy. But we agree that he was clearly very affected by what he had done. He tries to threaten Romeo, but it's not convincing. He's still in shock and knows Romeo has good reason to be mad. This contributes to his weakness (just my interpretation).
@@monmothma3358 considering the fact that Tybalt had the opportunity to kill Romeo as soon as he picked up the gun but hesitated long enough to put his own life at risk is a sign of guilt for his actions, and therefor a sign of mercy. Perhaps wishing mercy for himself more than anyone else. But either way, every second he hesitated put his own life in jeopardy. While all this is happening he’s being told straight up, ‘yo one of us is definitely not coming out of this alive, which one of us is it going to be? You? Me? Or both?’ He left it in Gods hands, which was a choice in itself.
Its pretty easy when you study shakespear language and understand the context of what the scene intails! Basically saying its either 1 of us that go with mercrusio in death or both our entire families go with him! Basically trying to stop a war between two families that will result in a massacre.

The main reason why people were so happy that Leo finally won an Oscar is the fact that he never got nominated for performances like this (and many others). There was a lot of bias against nominating young male actors at the time, which is getting better these days. But Leo should have three Oscars by now, not one.
Those eyes though....should have won an Oscar just for this scene. The acting is breathtaking
I know. I discovered DiCaprio as an actor because of this movie. Been a fan ever since.
He won best actor at Berlin Film Festival (one of the more important festival in the world) in 1997
I don't think he was acting...
The fact that he has only ever received one Oscar is an absolute travesty IMO.
