Magnificent! Most other videos don't compare. It's all breathy singing with closed throats. Whatever happened to beautiful legato singing with Bel canto voices and full chest engagement? 😢

For an interesting comparison, check out the Eric Leinsdorf recording from 1960. The principal tenor is Fritz Wunderlich (the trio begins at just after 21'). His approach is more "ardent" than Hadley's, which, though very beautiful, I personally find a bit on the cool side. Having said that, the other two singers with Wunderlich do not match his ardour, whereas Hadley's fellow singers have more unanimity of approach. I'm guessing the difference is in the conductors as much as in the temperament of the singers.

What is so wonderful about Jerry is his complete freedom from Mannerisms. Always just pure singing, clean voice production, purity of intention.
