  • ʻŌiwiTV’s Nā Loea: The Masters is an original film series by ʻŌiwiTV that promotes and perpetuates kuanaʻike Hawaiʻi, or a Hawaiian worldview, through the engaging stories of a select group of masters whose collective knowledge represents an amazing cross section of cultural wisdom.
Mālama Moʻomomi features “Mac” Poepoe, a native Hawaiian fisherman and community leader on Molokaʻi, who has dedicated his life to sharing his knowledge of traditional resource management with the hope of ensuring that this ocean “ice box” will be well-stocked for generations to come. Mac’s wealth of knowledge and expertise accumulated over his years of growing up in the rigor and lifestyle of a Hawaiian family that has been fishing and maintaining the sustainability of these waters for generations. (It could be said that) Mac is one of a small group (or “one of a dying breed”) of skilled fisherman who approach their practice with a passion not just for the sport of it but to hone and perpetuate their skill and expertise in managing Hawaiʻi’s ocean ecosystems, which is critical to the sustainability of Hawai‘i and its people. This humble fisherman is a giant resource for Hawaiʻi’s future.

    Director of Photograhy: Matt Yamashita

Growing up in this culture was the most powerful force on my development as a human being and a man. I have lived my life with very similar views and values as Uncle Mac. A perspective of humility and gratitude. mahalo

I like the idea he expresses at the end, in which the expression of change over time is viewed through the prism of a ‘changing story.’ If the relationship between the elements change, or if the circle is broken in some way, then “the story changes.” Until then, fundamentally, “the story is the same.” That’s profound.

Your Mana'o is so uplifting and I'm happy to know I've been on a good path since a Young boy fishing and gathering from the ocean and loving and caring for the ocean with every amount of respect it deserves. I hope I can spread your message to the generations of Kanaka Lawai'a from my Son and Daughter growing up around me to the generations of keiki unborn and still to come.

Easily the Best RUclips segment I’ve ever watched, reminds me of when I was a child , learning from my father & Papa. I also love the way Uncle is so calm & relaxed about shooting the footage, most people in their later years not used to be on camera, or even expressing their thoughts.
We were Truly Blessed, Mahalo’s Uncle🙏🏼🤙🏽💯

this da good kine fishing mentality. He no care about showing off on facebook or to his family the most fish he can possibly show by keeping everything. Instead the humility just means you share what you actually kept for food.

Interesting thing about the moi. By throwing the large moi back the are releasing the egg laying females. Moi transition from male to female at around 12”. Also older fish produce exponentially more and healthier eggs/sperm. It seems the Hawaiians were so in tune with their environment they unconsciously knew this.

8:40 - the old superstition about, you don't talk about going fishing because the fish will hear and you won't catch any.
