So whenever I do this no way I’m trusting myself to be that close to the paint. I’ll be applying masking tape with duct tape on top of that on area of the trunk lid closest to the engine bay. A few minutes of prep will help my nerves, and possibly my pocketbook a bunch. Excellent video, really enjoying your hard work, making it easier on the rest of us!
Thanks William, honestly it looked worse than it is, but yes certainly good practice to cover the area just in case. Tape a towel or protector over the area masking tape is too thin.👍
@@TDS981 I disconnected the strut that held up the trunk lid. This allows the trunk to open up a fraction of an inch more and provides slightly more clearance.
Thanks for the well put together Video. It certainly is more complicated than accessing the top access cover on the 986 / 7. I think I will just accept that there is an engine in there somewhere... lol
Good gosh...I knew it was difficult, but didn't realize it was THAT difficult. I used to have a 986 and i was so much easier. Ah well, guess one of these days I'll attempt it, but for now, the engine bay will continue to haunt me lol. Great video. Thank you so much the best on RUclips.
Was going to check my air filter on my 718 until I watched this video 😂 I think I'll wait for the 3 years until Porsche will do it 😂 thanks for the info mate!
Oh man, this is quite a process. I can get a 986 engine cover off in less than 2 minutes. Top to service position, unclip the rear of the top (similar fasteners to the 981 it appears), raise the rear of the top, unscrew 4 hand fasteners, remove carpet, remove 4 more hand fasteners to remove the lid. I saw you mention you wanted to get a 986 2.5 as a project car. Do it! They are great cars. I'm probably going the other way...upgrading to either a 981 or 718.
Yes slight more time consuming that I would have liked! Yes I would love a 986 I really like how they have aged I'll keep an eye out for the right one. 👍
Thanks for the informative video and tips....it all helps. Metal engine cover looks like a pain.... maybe applying some tape to the edges of the boot and a few other painted areas? Are the edges of the metal engine cover quite sharp, is it worth smoothing the edges with some sandpaper or smooth file while it's off?
It looks worse in the video, but definitely recommend covering and protecting the painted areas just in case. Yes they are sharp so to be extra careful you could apply tape around the edges for refitting. 👍
Refitting the carpet took the longest! Other than that your instructions were excellent. I did manage to do it without removing the carpet inside the car, you can get to the 2 Torx bolts. Thanks!
Curiosity, I’ve never removed that cover and an opportunity to clean the top of the engine. If I decide to clean the throttle body I know how to get to it now. Thanks again.
Please accept my appreciation for making tis video. I will only try tis once my guarantee expires and I need to access the engine. REQUEST: Please make a video sowing what is behind the cabin bulkhead. I plan to drill and screw in self-tappers because I would like to fasten a net. Or a plan to fasten a net on the back of the tilt-seat so as to store stuff. Do you have any ideas PLEASE????
I think that's a bad idea don't do it, you are just introducing noise into the cabin just put the stuff in the luggage area or floor or use velcro or something. Don't do it.
Great video. On my 718 I didn't need to remove any interior carpet to get access to all the bolts. I did spend some time shuffling the top back and forth at various steps to get easier access. Was quite nervous about bending or tearing, but didn't hear anything. As usual having the right tools made things much easier. A Klein mini-ratchet for hex bits made removing the hard to reach bolts easy. 1/4 inch ratchet with Torx bits for the rest. Fitting stuff back was not fun. I'm not 100% sure I got the foam rectangle (not the giant sound deadening panel) and the carpet back into he correct position by the seats. It's not particularly tight, but it's not critical so I won't stress about it. I can't tell what it is supposed to grab onto up against the seats. This is way way too much effort for an air filter. BMC air filter requiring annual service is a lot less attractive compared to a paper filter requiring replacement every 4 years. And this is on top of the cleaning and oiling dance.
Glad you enjoyed it, and found it useful, you have some good reflections. On the 981 you access the air filters from the trunk/luggage area so it's much easier, it's certainly not worth the pain for an aftermarket filter.
Well the good news is that it is very rare that you need to access the engine, the maintenance tasks are done via the wheel arch or from the luggage area. I certainly wouldn't base your decision to buy an f type based on this, I've had to open it maybe twice in almost 5 yrs! An F-type is quite different in my experience, bit more drama maybe but a long way off in terms of precision.
@@TDS981 I must admit I prefer the look of the F-Type too, but I agree it is not as precise as the Boxster, but as you say you get a bit more drama with the F-Type which is fairly entertaining. If I could afford it I would buy both! Lol. Unfortunately I can only have one at a time at this stage.
@@TDS981 These cars are awesome, and I wanted to thank you for your videos. Well the biggest difference is in the engine lid. Instead of T fasteners they have 1/4 turn handles. It's removed in seconds. Same for the carpet / sound deadener that goes on top. I don't have to remove the rear carpet panel that sits behind the seats too. When I service my 986, I do as you do with adjusting the top but instead leave about 4 - 5" gap from the top of the windshield, but then over the engine compartment, remove the bottom lower clips of the arms of the top. This allows me to pull the whole top open, and it's actually quite nice the way they designed the arms. When properly done the arms will actually lock into a rear position so that they won't allow the top to close on your head as you are working over the engine area. Well, when you have the top fully open like that this leaves a lot of room to work in the compartment. Even though the top appears to be safely held open, you still need to use a screw driver to stick in one of the holes (either side is fine) that had the clips this will keep the top from popping back, if you accidentally hit it and the arms pop back out of their locked state. These cars are awesome.
