    Proud to say; my mom and Jayne ran around Hollywood together as friends. Jayne befriended my mom while she worked at Rexall drugstore in around 1956. She was at the Hospital at my Birth, cause my Dad was a High Voltage lineman out of town at the time. I of course don't remember it,, but was told by my older sister of 4 and my mom confirmed; that at the time, that Jayne gave the bottom of my foot a kiss for luck in my life. Guess it worked,, no real success, but I am the last of that generation alive and eager for my turn. Guess it was luck of kind I have a hard time being grateful of.

    Jayne and Joan, both born in 1933, were born about a month apart (Jayne in April, Joan in May.) Jayne died 57 years ago and Joan is still alive today. Jayne was just 34, Joan is 91and counting. Life is so random. If one thinks otherwise, they need only watch these two beautiful women that had so much going for them: how fate would affect their time here on earth so very differently. Whoever said one must die young to become a legend of sorts was wrong. Arguably, both were to become equally famous.

    What I love the most about old films like this one is the underlying decency of everyone. People make mistakes and people get frisky but underneath it ALL they are decent to each other. Good writing, good filmmaking.

    • @Jeffbeat77
      @Jeffbeat77 Месяц назад +1

      A level of decency is maintained that would not be present in a current scenario. Steinbeck’s characters clearly reveal their political beliefs, without being nasty or condescending. This fictional story is more about how a charged group of situations used to be worked out without an I’m better than you approach,? IMO
      It wasn’t that long ago when a minimum amount of respect was given to both sides.

    The set decorations in this film are a 50’s collector’s dream…the bus, the diner’s cigarette machine, the telephone, the pocketbook display rack, the bedroom goodies…all topped off with hairstyles, clothes and of course the one and only Jayne Mansfield. Now THAT’S the Real Thing!

      It is curious that movies set in western states show decades old cars and telephones. I was five years old when this movie was made, and I can assure you that growing up in Michigan and having visited states east of the Mississippi, we saw cars from the decade and did not have candle stick or hand-held receiver ear piece phones of the type used in the 1920s.

      Yes, the echo chamber of the internet claims that she had an IQ of 149, 160 or 163, take your pick. This is extraordinarily unlikely. 130 places you in the top 2% of the population. No evidence is ever given: when and where was the test (or tests) administered?
      We know JFK scored 119 at Choate.
      Nothing against Jayne, she might well have been a bright girl. John Bates Clark medal material? I'd want evidence.

      @@lonelybro77 Well, none of us walks in the other's shoes which makes life more sanitary. Fungal afflictions might spread otherwise.
      My comment seems to be AWOL. All I said was that the Mansfield IQ claim is of doubtful provenance, given that a range of non-verifiable numbers are thrown up against the wall by various secondary and tertiary sources. The lowest of those numbers would place her above thr 99th percentile in intelligence; the highest would exceed Einstein. This is highly unlikely. And nothing in her life hints at such an extraordinary intellect.
      Somebody made the same claim for Raquel Welch on another site. Mansfield and Welch were lamentably exploited, and they may well have been bright. Interesting women. But it is overcompensation to make claims of cognitive super-power. 160 IQa are not thick upon the land.

      Jayne sabotaged her own career at Twentieth Century Fox by doing outrageous publicity stunts. I'm sure you've seen the photos where she's spilling out of her dress almost onto Sophia Loren's dinner plate. She craved publicity, and didn't care whether it was good or bad. Jayne turned herself into a joke.

    This story I read in a book, later heard about the film. My family was driving in the countryside where this was filmed as I read. Maybe eight or ten years old, I was fascinated by the writing. When the film first came out the release was blocked by Steinbeck's widow. This is the first time I have seen the beauty of the actual movie. The other versions were bootleg and very poor quality. Finally I get to see it clearly. I started driving bus in 2013 as a result of this film partly.

    • @spartandodge6034
      @spartandodge6034 Год назад +3

      @@sandraelder1101 Yes, I think so; She was in some way offended that the sexuality in the story was not what her husband intended, but that the director took too much liberty in the scene play, giving the story a kind of different twist from what John Steinbeck had intended, in her opinion. Because the rights were hers, she made the decision in court I believe. I'd be glad to hear more about this myself. That is as close as I can come to answering you question. You know Hollywood screen writers have to sell the movie as best as they can. Personally I love this film as it is, and the book as it is; both great in my opinion.

      I don’t understand the part about Steinbeck’s widow blocking the movie release. The movie came out in 1957. John Steinbeck didn’t die until 1968. He was alive and well when this movie released.

    • @spartandodge6034
      @spartandodge6034 Год назад

      @@tune_smith I'll look into it again. Thanks for pointing that out. I was told I could not get the film because she was offended by the acting and the pornographic model emphasis, and blocked the release. Maybe Sir John Steinbeck was alive at the time. So maybe it was a quarrel? In any case I was not allowed to watch the release because it was banned. I am told this was a horrible damage to the director and producer at that time. The first time I watched it the film was a boot legged version that was not of good quality. Maybe my source was wrong, so I'll try to find out more about it.
