- Sunday marks 40 years since the deadliest mass murder in Washington state history, known as the Wah Mee Massacre.
On Feb. 19, 1983, 13 people were killed during a robbery at a gambling club in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District. Two men, Kwan Fai "Willie" Mak, 23, and Benjamin Ng, 20, would later be convicted of robbery and murder. A third man, Wai Chiu "Tony" Ng, 25, would be convicted for his role in the robbery.
The lone survivor of the mass murder, Wai Yok Chin, would later testify he recognized two of the suspects and was able to escape after the shooting.
KING 5 spoke with 69-year-old Ron Chew, a longtime journalist and editor for the International Examiner, who calls the Seattle Chinatown-International District his home.
"Having the Wah Mee murders happen in this neighborhood was pretty gut-wrenching," Chew said.

I'm So sorry for this tragedy RIP To The Deceased Victims of this Mass shooting.
Hey King 5 your still my favorite channel. I sure remember the Wah Mee murders & guess how I heard about it? All the way in Germany were I was stationed in the military. I'll never forget it. I was pulling all night duty at a secret satellite base & I was listening to the: Armed Forces Radio Network which at the time was the only way we soldiers got news from the States.. I was neck deep in paperwork drinking coffee when on the radio the broadcaster mentioned a mass shooting. So I thought that the shooting happened in city like Detroit, New Jersey high crime cities. I almost dropped my mug of coffee when it was announced that it was Seattle! I stopped what I was doing. My best friend Linda wrote me about the news & how one of the shooter fled. That was so horrible. Those men are still hated to this day I hear. Ben Ng seemed to be one bad apple.
Benjamin Ng and Willie Mak were the bullies in my Jr high school Asa Mercer. Their gang cornered me in the hall once for looking at them. To this day I'm still surprised I survived my education..
I'm very glad that you survived your education cuz I feel sorry that you are getting bullied. 🙏🏿💯🙏🏿
@@ellisjahfinelcraddock Thank you!🙏🙏
@@Fafafafoolin no probs, bro. My hugs to you. Take good care of yourself. 🙏🏿😊🙏🏿
I'm so glad that you survived as well. I went to Asa Mercer I remember there sure were some underlying tensions between certain Asians that got so bad I remember one boy throwing a ping pong paddle at another. I was watching 2 boys play during lunch. I got so scared. I'm so sorry you had to go through that mess. Much love.
I've been by there. Defenetly haunted.
I hope I don’t get in trouble. Is this related to the Chinese mafia?
Supposedly cursed and haunted.
This story shook me so much as a kid, i was afraid for years to even look in the direction of any Asian people.
Wow. Slaughterhouse
