One of The Greatest. Ever. But his drumming skills are more of a demonstration of his is really about his other-worldly musicianship. He is a great, great musician. I've seen this video at least 150 times. And I always watch it entirely. There is something so satisfying about the drums part on this song, especially when the china goes in 4/4 (1:30). Perfect.
same here, that part was what made me decide to try and learn the whole song. that part is probably the trickiest part in the whole song, especially when he comes out of that fill at 1:29, i noticed from this and other live performances of this song he plays it slightly differently than the album version. instead of immediately bashing out the straight pulse on the china like the album version, he hits crashes with the kick pattern for a sec before switching over to the china, i think because even for him it just feels SO awkward to go right into that. as far as limb interdependence goes, it's almost like drumming vertigo or something, that part. he's talked about that, like how you hear a programmed drum part and think it's no big deal, but something about it, often the tempo being just plus or minus 2-3 bpm can make a huge difference as to how difficult it is to actually pull it off, and i think the part im talking about is a prime example. your whole body rebels against it, like "this is just WAY too topsy-turvy feeling to land consistently" ... the limb interdependence for this and all meshuggah songs is pretty intense and there are always bars that are super tricky but manageable, but that ones just brutal. ok im rambling, anyway yeah that part rules.
3:24 OMG I've heard electric red hundreds of times but never raw audio from Tomas point of view. I now see it from it different prospective. Love that groove. 🔥
Normal people headbang down while hitting the snare, tomas heandbangs up while hitting the snare, idk if its just the time inside his head or pure technique
After learning a few of their songs on drums I've noticed this too. It actually feels more comfortable playing his weird patterns nodding on the upstroek
Looks like he has an itch on his back that he keeps trying to scratch with the drum stick in between beats at the end of the song. I understand using your wrists, but Tomas takes it above and beyond most out there.
Tomas Haake is one of my favourite drummers right now. Just look at the sheer dynamics of his playing within such a heavy genre of music, it's so hard to do that well! Just watch his snare work other than the main backbeat. Its amazing.
I just compared this a little with the Electric Red song from Alive DVD and I can almost assure that both are the same footages. I played both performances at the same time, looks synchronized, and he has the same Ministry Shirt.
Notice that Tomas Haake drops his drumstick around 3.55 in the video. Calm and easy he pulls up a new one. Very professional and very talented! Five stars!
Holy mother of god the rythms!!!!!!! And he's a gentleman as well. I got to shake his hand after their concert in Stockholm '11 which was really nice. Hoping for the same encounter this Thursday when they play in sthlm again. And another of Fredricks picks would be nice =)
saw the boys play in Sydney the other night....fantastic live, one of the best live acts I have ever seen. I would pay twice as much next time. Tomas is sight to behold.
@drummerbadass1 Haake was named the number one drummer in the "Metal" category in Modern Drummer magazine, as decided upon in the magazine's 2008 Readers' Poll. So go back to your corner.
@godsizedhole They have odd note groupings which means they accent on odd numbers and not on the universal 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 pulse. They always play in 4/4
@JackoThe1st: Dude... It's all FEELING.... He's not counting, he's dancing. He actually plays with his eyes shut the whole time. I was tripping out watching up close on the three ObZen dates that I saw him play on, because I finally got why Meshuggah is so infectious. There's a wicked grooooove buried at the core of it all he's just dancing around. That's what I think anyway.
excellent work of Tomas Haake Footage battery. I am a fan of the sounds of batery, the soul of a band that is complemented in harmony with the other components. very good Tomas! \m /
Last thursdays concert I got to shake hands with/fistbump everyone in the band except Thomas, but almost, almost got his stick. The guy next to me got it instead. I now have a signed poster as well, which is nice. The concert was incredible. Absolutely mesmerizing.
@lackthereof1783 They aren't just in 4/4, like you said it's a POLYrhythm. Therefore, they are in 2 different time signatures simultaneously. One of them usually being 4/4.
The transition from dropping the stick to obtaining a new stick and basically staying with the same rhythm as if it didnt happen...Mr. Haake is an alien for sure.... wtf man.
@RythmicalParoxysm I guess you can look at a polyrythm that way, but it's still a polyrhytm. The overlay of the 4/4 against the other time signature causes the accent to fall in a different place everytime, yes. But so does syncopation, and there is a difference between the two. I'm not sure why you are trying to explain this to me, besides, you are using a very broad description of it. And yes, it's always 4/4 AND something else, that causes these "odd note groupings".
Success shouldn't be measured by how much money you have all the time. Unless of course your goal is to become rich. How much would you know about these men personally? Was their reason for doing what they do to become rich or maybe just to enjoy what they do and be able to sustain a family? I don't know... but I love their music.
@rgchingy i dont even think its that. its just polyrythems. most Meshuggah songs are in standard 4, they just abuse the rythem like a mother so it sounds like its in another time.
I'm pretty sure he dropped a stick at 3:56 and scooped another one without skipping a beat. My man.
Yep
That's why you need gloves on both hands
+wes1hoskins No he can't
His left hand is always busy in ghost notes
Good call. He did and you would never know it. I know some will disagree but I think this dude is the best drummer on the planet.
@@takiclintonharness4066 always, that shit is unreal sometimes

I'm just obssesed by the way he uses the hi-hat. So jazzy and discrete.
Herculaso
😂
He never crosses his right hand over! It's amazing. Strictly for left foot playing.
@@TunnelJumper guy rocks three sets of hats
I love how much power he puts behind the cymbals in the breakdown at 4:45, sounds massive.
From 1:10 to 1:45 has me hooked since 2008
Same here :D Love that part!
That part it's just irresistible.. it got me every single time

4:46 each and every kick sounds like someone got shot by a plasma weapon from 3018
If only he had his pedal hat a little more open during this performance. It's usually so high in the mix and he'd be stomping it during that part too!
😅😅😅
So much power
I was there that night!! 🤘🏼
This is ridiculous, this is unbelievably hard, I swear Tomas invented rhythm.
3:24 OMG I've heard electric red hundreds of times but never raw audio from Tomas point of view. I now see it from it different prospective. Love that groove. 🔥
I played this track from the start to the end. Nailed it 100% Probably even better than, Haake plays it here.......
Then i woke up and got out of bed
😢
whats the song's name?
@@ziya6809 Electric Red from the album, Obzen
The same thing happened to me just with eulogy from tool😢
Normal people headbang down while hitting the snare, tomas heandbangs up while hitting the snare, idk if its just the time inside his head or pure technique
SlipknotFUCKCRAIG'SGLOVES He’s nodding to the off beat to not lose his place with all the syncopation. Could be wrong.
Interesting thought
Or everybody headbangs differently to a particular rythym? XD.
A lotnof their songs have the snare beat on 3 out of the 4 bar measure. So maybe hes nodding to the 4/4 beat while hitting the snare on over 1 or 3?
After learning a few of their songs on drums I've noticed this too. It actually feels more comfortable playing his weird patterns nodding on the upstroek
1:31
Me : TOMAS !!!!!!! THE CHINA.. THE CHINA !!!!
Tomas The Grey : Oppp.. OKAY... Tshhh.... Tshhh.. Tshhh.. Tshhh..
hahahahahahahahaha ikr, he forgot for a moment lol
4:45 I love watching Tomas beating the absolute fuckin shit out of the drums like they owe him money
That snare.
I'm fucking obsessed with how he plays... could watch him for hours.. a true GENIUS ❤
its amazing how precise he is with keeping the tempo so perfect
AHHH this guy grooves sooo hard... going into the final riff kills it, probably one of the groovies marching riffs Meshuggah has
the cymbal rithmic work starting at 1:11 is poetry
Shit again watching this stuff... I need to call Meshuggah Cuckoo Fans Recovery Centre right now
yes m8 me 2
1:13 - 1:46 holy shit
I love the rhythm! So fluent and lively.
Electric Red from Obzen :)
One of my favorite songs from my favorite band, loved this awesome perfomance
4:42 - I love how that leads into the ending.
Looks like he has an itch on his back that he keeps trying to scratch with the drum stick in between beats at the end of the song. I understand using your wrists, but Tomas takes it above and beyond most out there.
I love hearing Tomas drum with the vocals and other instrument volumes lowered. It sounds like he's summoning viking spirits.
that snare is so captivating, idk whats up with me, but it just catches my ear something crazy. love meshuggah so much

1:50 on is a joke. Ridiculous!
oh hi Josh
HaliniSnow You're tearing me apart Josh!!
I love how most of his crashes are rides xD
i must have listened to electric red 100 times and the intro still messes with me every time
I just compared this a little with the Electric Red song from Alive DVD and I can almost assure that both are the same footages. I played both performances at the same time, looks synchronized, and he has the same Ministry Shirt.
God, that fill at 3:22 is so perfect
I could listen to the drums all day. Amazing drummer.
Must be painful being the greatest to have ever lived
Notice that Tomas Haake drops his drumstick around 3.55 in the video. Calm and easy he pulls up a new one. Very professional and very talented! Five stars!
3:39 what an incredible fill with the cymbals + double bass
so fluid, confident, amazing-- pours out of his soul. flawless.

@Dieterbe the most possible is, to my ears, a camcorder located behind every monitor or amp, so to catch the set sound from the back...
@godsizedhole They have odd note groupings which means they accent on odd numbers and not on the universal 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 pulse. They always play in 4/4
@iApproveOfThisVideo I first started drumming out to Lars, i got taught a few techinques from him, he's still pretty cool in my book..
1:20 He's like an octopus, blink and you'll miss it.
Electric Red off the Obzen album, track 2.
Q Strikker36: the song is called Electric Red from the album Obzen.

@EvanQuinn07 he is playing beats. they are just complex and polyrhythmic so its hard for some to udnerstand at first
I was at MetalFest as well, awesome show., however they played very short set list. Can't wait to see them again.
the echo on that snare
Living Legend! Tomas Haake
thanks for taking the time to answer my comment

I saw Meshuggah at the same place just last night! Fantastic show as always \m/
Haake, it looks like you're playing in you're sleep you're playing is that fluid!
@JackoThe1st That's exactly how I see it too, also how I've been able to learn these songs, just a lot of listening and memorization.
Hail to the KING !!!
@lackthereof1783 They aren't just in 4/4, like you said it's a POLYrhythm. Therefore, they are in 2 different time signatures simultaneously. One of them usually being 4/4.
Yes I have met him as well just the most civil nicest guy you could hope to meet.....
@rgchingy exactly if anyone could comprehend the time signatures then theyd be playing in an awesome band too

Wow was für ein Brett! Wow what a Dope Hitter!
@xenokx that thing around his elbow is a tatoo. i dont remember exactly who, but i think one of the other members from meshuggah had the same tatoo
@Destruction3402 He is the master of the polyrhythm!
@iApproveOfThisVideo and thanks to those techniques that i learned from him, I know how to drum to this shit right here lol
Electric Red my fav of all time
he need more footage from awesome drummer

If I was a religious man, I'd say that Jesus had come back to earth, reborn as a drummer. Holy handgrenade this is amazing.
@Shadow021594
no his hands are only human. its because he has to play meshuggah songs, the skin will just start to bubble and melt otherwise
I cant undestarnd how he can play this ultra-complicated rythms, he is the fucking master
simply the greatest
Nice! Looking forward to the dvd!!!
The master at work.
Tomas Haake doesn't go out of time. Time goes out of Tomas Haake.
You are sooo cool.
I think I'm gonna have to start doing that, everytime I stop playing for a while and then I play a gig I get horrible blisters. It sucks
This guy is amazing
One of the greats
Thomas Haake-Sounds awesome and even looks cool while playing crazy math shit.
Smooth!
I think one of the more impressive parts of this video that you don't usually notice is that he's keeping time with the hi-hat the ENTIRE time.
Meshuggah is fuckin awesome! Tomas Haake is a beast.
Looks like rosewood SQ2's, gotta love em
Electric Red, second track from ObZen
