Everything Ron said was spot on and came true - he said we'd win the League and he said we'd be European Champs because of the natural status and size of the club. The Villa he took over was the most successful club in the country but fallen on hard times - he had the balls to tell the boardroom that Villa should be number one, no excuses. We haven't had that kind of thinking at the club since he left...Ellis was the guy who sucked the greatness out of us and pumped us full of mediocrity and excuses.

I'm struggling to think of a player who could row with him at the time. He was legend.

Tony Morley gave him the bird everytime he scored. They never saw eye to eye but Saunders got the very best out of him

Took him six years to build the best team in Europe with very little money. Tough and uncompromising, a winner.....I've never really felt happy with any of the managers we've had since, Martin was decent as was Dean Smith, the rest were mediocre at best reflecting mediocre ownership. The current owners seem to be much more on the money although the Gerard appointment was a waste of 18months. UTV
