2006 GSXR Water Pump Leak Fixed (leaking oil/radiator fluid)

The vast majority of people seem intelligent enough to pay attention, and if you are not, I am sorry but I can't spend my time responding with what you should have watched already**
I looked and looked and never found any videos about this specific problem I had, so I decided to make one of how I handled it.
It was a simple oil seal. Make sure you get the right part! (17461-01H00) Take your pump to the dealer to dry fit the part before buying!

Couple of things you did not do correctly.
On the shaft, use something like Brasso on a clean cloth with the shaft in a drill spinning to polish gleam the outside of the shaft where is going to be going into the seals. On your shaft, there was still a slight ring wear on the surface where the old seal was contacting, and until you polish those rings out, it going to cause faster wear to the new seal lip areas.
On the bottom seals in the snout housing, use a light coat anaerobic sealer on the outer edge of the seal to the pump snout channel before you press in the seal, then use a Q tip to clean any of the sealant off above the top line of the outer surface of the outer lip (don't get any on the inner seal surface). Hence if there is a nick or something from punching the old seal off of the snout surface from punching the old one out, this will make sure you don't get a leak through there with the new seal in place.
But yep, heat help to punch the old seal out.
On the upper mech seal, 7/8 socket with the back of the snout plate back up makes quick work punching the new seal in place without needing heat. The outside of the seal already has sealer on it, but will add a touch more of aerobic sealer to surface between the top of the OEM sealer and the bottom of lip surface to make sure it not going to leak here as well.
Now before you install the shaft, you want to grease both the lower seal and upper mechanical seal surfaces with Dielectric (silicone) grease, as well the shaft surface that will mate with the inner seals as well. Fact is, will go with a Q-tip and add a little extra grease between the seal void areas as well since this extra grease will insure that the seals do not become dry over time between the seal to shaft surfaces. Hence dielectric (silicone) grease will not harm the seals, and keep the sealing lips of the seals from wearing quickly as the steel shaft spins on them. Again, smoother the shaft surface, the longer that seals are going to last.
As for the impeller seal, should have come with the rubber backer piece and you really want to replace it, or at least Dielectric seal the seal edge on it as well before you push the impeller back on the shaft.
As for impeller bolt, 242 loctite on it to keep it from backing off down the road.
As for the O ring of the snout to pump plate, If you are going to use the old one over, then RTV will work fine with all the surfaces de-greased so it will stick, but put a thin bead in the channel first, drop the O ring in, then light coat over the top then bolt the shout cover back in place.

Thanks for this video. I ran into the same issue with my kids GSXR. All the oil spilled on the freeway. He was lucky he got to a safe location to tow the bike home.

Be careful when hammering in the new mechanical seal. As I just found out its made out of ceramic or something and ended up chipping a bit off it. Also when I was taking the old one out I didn't have to hammer it I just put my body weight onto the screwdriver and it gave. Granted he used a lighter where I used a propane torch but still lol great vid man!

So the parts you ordered from partszilla did or didn’t fit? I have a 2006 and it’s not showing fitment for my bike.
Didn't read all the comments but if this helps use a 7/8 socket to place over the mechanical seal to hammer it in instead of the wrench in video. Was super easy. I did use a blow torch lightly to release the oil and mechanical seal. Also used a socket to gently tap oil seal in. Any one that fits. Thanks for video, just finished my repair

Shoulda seen my 01 gsxr oh my, I bet it weighed an extra 5kg from dirt just like that covered in oil and sand but it’s nice to know you do a proper job on a bike cuz most ppl slap em back together without even looking at the dirt

Francisco D'anconia, damn bro yeah there are crazy’s of every breed in the uk too. I’ve had my 01 gsxr for about 5 weeks now and put about 10 miles on it and already nearly been hit twice from someone not paying attention but I feel you with the family side of things too like it’s too much to risk nowadays unfortunately

Great video! My 2012 started doing it so I went ahead and rebuilt the pump. The oven trick helped tremendously.

The white ceramic seal should ALWAYS be changed also, it seals against the carbon part with the spring in it, they wear-in together, yours MAY have worked and you got lucky, but they sell them as a matched pair for a reason-

Hi i got a 2004 gsxr 600 my first bike recently and i notice it is only leaking small amounts of coolant by that same spot. do i have to change the same seals as you or just different seals. please let me know as i need to get this bike ready to ride before school starts thank you.
Thanks for the video....I wanted to ask, was this a small leak happening after a running your bike hard? I ask because I was on the track for most of the day and I noticed the leak in the afternoon sessions.
I pretty much always ran my bike hard so it's hard to say. But it definitely was not a small leak. It shot out directly from the bottom of my bike as soon as I turned it on the next morning. It was during winter so maybe the oscillating extreme temperatures had something to do with it I don't know.
That is why it feels tighter lol :D But good idea on the gasket
When disconnecting the pump from the hoses, do any coolant or oil come out? I'm mainly concerned about the coolant.

This is a great video I have an 08 GSXR I believe I'm having the same problem cause oil is coming from the same exact place on my bike as in the video my only question is did you flush your coolant before repairing it and removing those two hose's?
I removed the coolant before removing the hoses. that bolt on the front of the pump will let out the coolant, just don't do it when it's really hot it can burn you. put new coolant in after the repair. let me know how it goes!
Ok thanks yeah I just did it today, I also drained all the oil I'm gonna wait till this weekend to finish the repair. I'll keep you updated.
Yusufu Sanu Just curious, have you had any Stator or rectifier issues? Both my rectifier and Stator went out. I relocated my rectifier into the air box instead of behind that hot radiator.
+Francisco D'anconia No I have not had that problem yet, but what caused that to happen? do you know by any chance? Also how were you able to check for the leak after you repaired the water pump seal?
You have to fill it back up with oil and radiator fluid. There's really no other way to check, but, if that oil seal presses firmly into that gap, oil should not be able to get past it.
Voltage regulator/rectifiers turn excess voltage into heat, so by nature they run hot. The heat fins on them are designed to dissipate that heat, but when they are mounted behind a radiator that blows hot air on them, they are much more likely to fail. That is why I mounted mine into my air box. I just drilled a hole in the middle large enough to run the connectors through. You can also drill holes to mount the rectifier inside using the factory screws, but the new one I got was so big it just fits snugly with the air filter pressing down on it.

Yes there is. The small seal I replaced in the video allows the coolant to leak outside of the pump, but the larger, 2 part internal seal can fail causing coolant and oil to mix.

Hey, this is amazing, mine just started leaking tonight. It doesnt seem to leak when its upright, only on the stand. What was that part that you chose not to replace, just to make sure i dont order it. Thanks again.
+Richard Singh it was simply the impeller side of the mechanical seal. It presses up against the larger half of the seal and keeps the radiator fluid from leaking out simply by mechanical pressure. If you order a new mechanical seal it will come with it regardless. it may only leak when on the stand because the fluid reaches the oil seal. Either way, when you start the bike, oil will make its way to that seal anyhow and leak out. if you can, order the part according to the number in the video and take the pump with you to test fit the oil seal. Keep me posted!

Francisco D'anconia So good news, I followed the tutorial and gave it a ride, no leaks. Should I feel comfortable about this? I still feel nervous. The mechanical seal i banged it in real good, but the lip was dented. But my thoughts are, that thing is SUPER tight, so even if the lip is dented a bit, the spring was moving freely and it was definitely jammed in there.
What do you think?

Theres a pretty thick washer that the impeller shaft sits on. It's the only washer in the whole pump that I recall. Hope you figure it out
Im having massive difficulty trying to take the seal off to get to the oil seal... 22k bike, doesnt look like its been looked after much.. any tips? Do i need to chuck the whole thing in an oven for 20mins?

brother a question I have that motorcycle in 2007 when I add coolant to the radiator it goes directly to the machine in the magic eye of the oil you can see it mixed with the oil I want to know if I remove the pump and do it you can see what the problem is is it in the pump?

Hello, i have a gsxr 600 08, when i come home from a fast ride, and switch off the bike i hear a boiling sound from radiator(i think) and then antifreeze/coolant leaks on the floor..i changed thermostat but nothing..what to do?
You'll need to dry everything off and carefully watch where the leak is coming from after topping off fluids. That's really the best I can advise right now.
I replaced the oil seal/mechanical/ceramic. All was good after several warm ups so i went for a ride the next day, 45 minutes into the ride (fair bit of high rpms) oil all over my foot. Get home put it on side stand and oil just pours out. Took pump off inspected my work looks good and i double checked everything is within spec and it is. Refitted and put on side stand and it's pouring out again.. I suspect the mechanical oil seal failed rather than the o ring.. it was difficult to push in and not loose fitting.. any ideas?
Is it a genuine Suzuki part? All I can think is that something failed again due to poor quality maybe. Either way, if oil is pouring out of that weep hole, there's basically only the oil seal or mechanical seal as the culprit. I know it's a bummer but pull them out and inspect for damage and replace them. The worst part of an experience like that is the lack of confidence while riding. It's freaking scary not knowing if you're going to be riding on oil at any moment... Best of luck buddy.
@@Francisco-Danconia Yes genuine parts, so i ended up buying a new pump and inspected the old pump/new seals. Looks like the oil seal got pushed in toward the prop side and just allowed oil to ooze through without any obtrusion. I'm wondering if Suzuki sold me the wrong oil seal as i don't understand how it's possible. What's really fucked me off though is it's leaking oil still even after replacing the pump, it's a small leak that only leaves a few drops after a hard run but it's the same god damned leak that made me do the pump in the first place. Back to square one after all the headache.

@@davidharvey3645 I'm not sure what I'll end up doing, maybe I'll try fit a thicker o ring or a thin strip of gasket sealer along the o ring. The leak is a bit heavier than it was before i replaced the pump
So the other day I was leaving work and when I was letting my bike warm up I noticed a steam of oil coming from behind the waterpump so I quickly shut the bike off check it out looks like its coming from behind the water pump do you think replacing this o ring will fix my problem.over night it leaked quart of oil at least just parked
1sikR6 Oo that's probably it, there's a hole back there, it comes out of as soon as that seal fails

+Francisco D'anconia Thanks, The part number I bought from bike bandit have the 08 600 and the 06 750 as the same part number, 17461-0H00. From the video I initially wasn't sure if that was the new seal bag or the old seal bag. You saved me like hours of trying to figure out this disassemble. Thanks to you it took me like five minutes to take apart and from your video I feel it will take me another five minutes to reassemble..

While you can replace the seals. Just grab a new one. It’s super easy and then sell your old one. Or keep as spare

I just did this with a 3/8 dyna bolt (couldn't find 10mm), some spacers and a larger metal spacer i found at ace hardware to sit flush against the water pump face and washers. The trick is to put the water pump half with the mechanical seal in boiling water. Remove it from the fire and let it sit in the water for 5min. The metal seal came out way too easy. I bet you could actually just use pliers on the seal if you losen up the locktight on the mechanical seal like putting it in hot water.
Why can't you just replace the little o-ring seal that blocks the oil coming from the motor? Or do you have to drain the coolant and replace all the seals? I have the same problem, only oil from the leakage.... Need a quick fix, so if the o-ring is enough, that would be ideal.. Sweet video btw!
It's been so long I can't recall what you're referring to, sorry. In my opinion though, if you've went through the trouble of pulling the pump, take the extra time and replace what you can. Good luck

Francisco D'anconia Hey, I know you said if you're going through the trouble of pulling the pump, that you might as well take the extra time and replace all the Seals/O Ring but, did the seals inside the pump aka mechanical seal, oil seal damaged? Like were you able to see if the inside seals were damaged compared to the new parts you replaced? It wasn't mentioned in the video or shown in the video from the old vs new parts. I know I should probably change the O ring, mechanical seal, and oil seal just incase but, I also want to be 100% certain. Just wanted to get a better understanding. Also thanks for the video! Very helpful!
I don't think the o ring had anything to do with the leak, the mechanical seal was ripped in the part where it flexes. sorry for the delayed response!
if I am understanding your question correctly, the part with the blue sealant was visibly damaged on the rubber flexible part. the oil seal was not the problem, but I changed it anyhow. The mechanical seal had a rip in it, similar to the flexible part of a speaker having a rip. hope that helps!

I need to ask. I did this to my gsxr 600 k7. Replaced the seals and all went exactly as you said, mechanical seal was a mission to get in properly. But now that it is all in. My shift turns quite hard but does turn. Is that normal or not?
+Vengeful Rat I'm sorry I took so long. The impeller shaft should be much harder to turn. the friction provided by the new seal gripping the shaft is what keeps the oil from leaking through. mine was noticeably more difficult. Don't worry about it :)
+Francisco D'anconia mine was a lot harder to turn. Could barely turn it by hand. But I did follow all your steps and did everything and so far, going well. I'm still shit scared every time the temp hits 220. Then I start wondering if the pump is working and it's not overheating.
On that note. I seemed to have added too much water to my bike. First time start and short ride, when I turned the bike off, it pushed out water. Second and third time, not as much, each time less and less until nothing. Now I just hear a bubbling in the overflow tank when I turn it off. Is that all normal?
Vengeful Rat First of all, by water, I really hope you mean antifreeze. Even if you don't live in a place where freezing occurs you need to be using antifreeze. It has non corrosive additives and has a higher boiling point than water. Also, it's of a viscosity that will lubricate the plastic mechanical seal. Water can slip past that seal. the bike will hit 220 if you aren't riding fast enough. As long as the fan actually kicks on and the temp goes back down about 10 degrees, you are within operating temps and have nothing to worry about. but absolutely use antifreeze.
+Francisco D'anconia well I did through in antifreeze but I didn't through just antifreeze. Did a mixture of antifreeze and water. I've always done that when filling radiators. Otherwise I'll have to go buy more antifreeze and just redo the whole process, which is easy enough.
Vengeful Rat Well if it was concentrated antifreeze I understand the water, but if it was 50/50 you should not add water. It's cheap enough, and a vital part of your bikes maintenance. Keep me posted on any problems you run into please!
if the pump rotates backwards, why do the blades stand? (see 20:06) I think this is factory fault.
It's correct in it's operation. it's just physics. The shaft hooks into the rotation of the engine and spins the correct direction. The fins draw a current in the fluid. I'm not quite sure what you mean by the blades "Standing" but, the are doing what they are supposed to do.
So if I'm leaking oil from my pump and it's not the o ring what else could it be? You were saying something about a pump? If so what is it and where is it?
That question is difficult to answer because there are not enough details. If you've taken it all apart and replace the o-ring and it is still leaking then it may be another gasket that surrounds the edge of the water pump as it goes up against the bike. All I can say is wipe the entire engine down clean and pay attention to where the oil is coming out. It's going to have to be a process of elimination. if it's been a long time since I made this video and I don't remember mentioning any other pump

what size wrench did you use to tap in the mechanical seal?
+M Hernandez it's a 23 MM. Pretty big, so if you don't have it you may want to use an adjustable wrench and see if that will work.

Yeah make sure when you clean chain you spray there. Or use a pressure washer.

it is quite hard... you will literally have to hammer the shaft out with a wide screwdriver or something... be careful not to scar the inside of the impeller when you do it. sorry to take so long...
Always make an attempt to clean before removal
Did you get a code for it? My bike doesn't want to crank over is it because of this ?
+Carlos Flores If your bike is not leaking coolant or oil from the very bottom as show in this video, this is not your problem sorry. Low oil or low coolant might throw a code, and if it is leaking from this part that could be the cause, but other than that I have too little information to assess your problem. when did the bike last run and what seems to have changed since then? Is the bike giving you a code?
+Carlos Flores There could be a million reasons why your bike isn't cranking. start with the simple stuff first. Make sure your fluids are at correct levels. Make sure your kill switch (Red button on right handlebar) is in the right position. Make sure you are in neutral. Check safety cut-off switch by kickstand... As long as your fluid levels are good, a leaking water pump seal should not cause the bike to cease starting.
I have a K 8 600 and the coolant keeps disappearing when the bike gets up to full temperature sometimes when the fan comes on the coolant will come out the overflow anyone any ideas what this could be any advice will be appreciated thank you
Is it a correct mix of coolant? If there's too much water it might just be boiling off. There may be some obstruction in the radiator as well... I'd completely flush it several times and refill with a proper mix. That's all i can think of at this point. Hope that helps
dear its normal with the age of bike or els you need to clean the radiator and change the fluid with a good one if you noticed after racing the bike it happens? if driving or normal acceleration also happened then cleaning the radiator is the only solution.
Did this leak make your bike run hot?
It leaked out the entire radiator volume, so it was not drivable. I would imagine any cooling leak if not caught fast enough would effect the cooling
When you say you tapped the impeller shaft to get it out did you heat it first? Mine is holding tighter than the hulks grip on super girls arse lol

I solved it with a very good mechanic, screw a bolt in slam it in a vice and bang it with a hammer just as I suspected, so either you got lucky or your legs are made of steel coz he said they're all that stubborn to get out 😎

I was leaking oil. this video should provide your fix. Don't waste money on a new pump, just be patient and careful and this should solve your problem
At 12:50 it looks like you put that piece in backward when looking at the exploded view in the service manual... maybe it doesn't matter?
Jacob Turnblom i put it back in the way it originally was with the damaged one. I could tell by which side had the wear from removal.

hi i have coolant leak in my gsxr750 08 after change my hoses with silicons and new coolant I have 65000khm
I go to my mechanic I bought used pump with low khm and repaired with new seals all without the shaft and propeler!
I have leak again but is 1 2 drops from the wheep hole under of my pump what you think...before I have a lake under of my pump!
in my reservoir the cooland goes from full to low after 1-2 rides air is out maybe...

my mechanic changed all the seals and now have a few drops from the little hole under the pump!
Just used this video to help replace all my seals. Waiting for the gasket maker to dry before I know if its worked.

For info to others, to get my mechanical seal out I just heated the casing with a hot air gun. Then the spring section came off easily with pliers. After that I was able to put a large screwdriver in from the inside of the pump making sure it didn't contact any of the housing or seal below. Then I just levered left and right slightly, moving round evenly and it came out with no hassle at all without any risk of damaging the mating surfaces
Thank you for the helpful comment. Others have suggested using plastic tools to avoid scratching, and I think that's wise as well

You're right I didn't, sorry. I shot a ton of footage for this video and threw a lot of it out. part of what I threw out was me examining the old seal. The rubber gasket on the outer edge of the pump was not leaking, and I used the old one. I just added gasket material (the orange stuff). the Oil seal, that black circular thing that has to be pressed in, that was leaking. It's just a shame it's so much work to get to it, but that was the problem. good luck with your repair!

I just hand tighten with a wrench. No problems. Use some thread lock if you want. It's soft aluminum and doesn't need much, so be careful
Why not just buy a new pump with everything
If cost isn't a factor, you could certainly do that 👍
