  • Royer Zaïde recorded by Nenad Leonart on harpsichord in a 4K high-res video. [Pièces de clavecin: La Zaïde, rondeau - Tendrement]
The Swiss young harpsichordist performs works by masters of the French Baroque period. Inspired by the album Vertigo recorded 2016 by Jean Rondeau, Nenad Leonart tries his take on the French harpsichord music by Royer.
This exceptional music conceives the harpsichord in vividly theatrical terms: Vertigo is the name of a dramatic, rhapsodic piece by Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer, who was a known harpsichord virtuoso in his time. The harpsichordist Jean Rondeau brought back this magnificent music to the general public through his recordings of the Pièces de clavecin by Royer. The pieces „La Zaide“ and „La marche des scythes“ are inspired by Royers ballet-héroïque „Zaïde, reine de Grenade“, or are excerpts from it. "La Zaide" (Rondeau) was recorded in March 2021 by Nenad Leonart on a copy of a historic Ruckers harpsichord in the Leonart Studio.

Zaïde, reine de Grenade (Zaïde, Queen of Grenada) is a ballet-héroïque written by the French Baroque composer Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer (c. 1705-1755), to a text by the Abbé de La Marre.
Zaïde was first performed, under the direction of the composer, on 3 September 1739 for the wedding of King Louis XV's daughter, when it ran for 44 performances, and was revived for the wedding of the dauphin in 1745, and again for the wedding of Marie Antoinette in 1770. It has been performed in recent years, thanks to a new edition by Lionel Sawkins.
    Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer (12 May 1703 - 11 January 1755) was a French composer, harpsichordist, organist, and administrator.
Born in Turin, Royer went to Paris in 1725, and in 1734 became maître de musique des enfants de France, responsible for the musical education of the children of the king, Louis XV. Together with the violinist Jean-Joseph de Mondonville, Royer directed the Concert Spirituel, starting in 1748. Royer was at the Paris Opéra during the 1730s and the 1750s, writing six operas himself, of which the best known is the ballet héroïque Zaïde, reine de Grenade. In 1753 he acquired the prestigious position of music director of the chambre du roi, and in the same year was named director of the Royal Opera orchestra.
Royer is particularly known for his often extravagant and virtuosic harpsichord music, like „Le Vertigo“ and also "La Marche des Scythes", both in his first book of harpsichord pieces.

    Bio:
Nenad Leonart is a baroque musician on harpsichord solo and baroque organ based in Switzerland. He was born in Nis and studied early music and harpsichord in the University of Arts Zurich (ZHdK) with Michael Biehl. Since 2019, he has started his own series of concerts in the “Leonart Studio” in Greifensee and moved into the music video production business. He also works as an organist, harpsichordist and basso continuo player.
As a baroque music afficionado, I am a big fan of my all-time favorite artists Andreas Staier, Gustav Leonhardt and Jean Rondeau. They have inspired me to go much further and cover new grounds, so I even started building my own baroque digital organ - it’s a Hauptwerk organ that’s able to play pipes from all my favorite baroque organs!
