I still use this computer for my music production works, I have upgraded it's spinning drive to SSD upgraded the RAM to 32GB and left the CPU as is (i5 7600) I have no problems whatsoever working with VSTs and other audio processing plugins till now. My DAW is Nuendo 12.
I just picked one of these up 3.4GHz i5, 16GB of RAM, 1TB drive runing Ventura for $425. Considering its hard to find a good 4k display for much less than that and this has a 5k display with a nice computer thrown in I think I did well.
@@DanyaalButt i have two iMac 5k 2017, one with i5 7400 cpu amd radeon pro 570, other with i5 7600k, amd radeon pro 580, both with 16gb. They are not gaming machines. Still using mine from late 2017. Working well no issues. Did upgrade the RAM. Took care of it and kept it clean. Runs Adobe Creative Suite no Problem. Great Machine!
I've been using one of its little brothers for five years; 21.5" 2017 Retina 4K. And though it has a tic that I don't like-it's reluctant to boot up sometimes-I'm tossing the dice and upgrading to a 1T SSD and 16 gig memory. Hopefully it'll last me 2-3 years, when I'll get whatever is the new Mac Mini. No more iMacs, however.
I bouth an late 2013 imac 27inch, im very happy with it, the sound is amazing, screen is amazing, need just an ssd and more ram.. you wont find all in one pcs, that have same quality, just garbage for high prices, so i prefer take an old device with good quality than others in the market, made of cheap plastic
I’m confused in which one to buy , I found a 2017 3ghz dual core i5 iMac with 8gb of ram for $500 , and there is also the new Mac mini m2 8gb ram for $600, im making music that use plugins for effects, which one would be faster and better?
Thank you, for this fun looking back review of the 5K iMac from 2017. As for myself, I am sure my collection will one day include not this model but, a 27-inch iMac Pro model. Why? Because it has even more ports and also a cool looking "space gray" design (smile...smile).
Great review. Quick question, I’m thinking to buy one of these 1. 2017 iMac 16RAM 250nvme + 250 ssd sata intel iris graphic plus, i5 2. 2019 iMac 8Ram 256gb SSD radeon 560 4GB, i5 Which one should I get?
Get a 27" one in any case (easy RAM upgrades, great screen). Internal SSD is preferable for sure. Everything else depends on price and what you intend to do with it.
Apple should return to user upgrades of RAM, HD and Batteries. It’s very greedy for a company to do this. Also allow repairmen fixing them. Any item like that must be repairable by others than Apple Stores. Repairs there are extremely high.
Would this be good going in to 2024 I’m a medical coder. I would hook it up to another monitor I have which is hp I think. Currently using a hp laptop with the other monitor. But I want to sell my hp laptop for a iMac desktop
As always, it depends. I develop software also and intentionally just got this "outdated" iMac relatively cheap 2nd hand (I also have a M1 macbook air). For Apple, Intel Macs are legacy as they have moved to Apple Silicon. But if you aware of that, you can get if for: - good OS support: macOS (officially up to Ventura, maybe more with OpenCore Legacy Patcher), normal 64bit-Intel Windows (10, with hacks also 11), Linux - great 5K display, good sound, nice all-in-one design - cheap RAM upgradability - guess there is no good way to attach an external monitor (but why would you? the 27" 5K screen is great), maybe with an USB-to-display adapter if you insist. Tipp: try getting one with a real internal SSD (not HDD, not Fusion Drive), preferably. Alternatively, get one with a FD and use an ext. USB-C SSD-case with a NVME M.2 SSD inside.
Update: The USB-C ports on the iMac 2017 are actually thunderbolt, so you could connect 2 compatible displays via TB. "This model can simultaneously support the internal display at full native resolution and up to one 5120x2880 (5K) external display at 60 Hz with support for one billion colors; two 3840x2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60 Hz with support for one billion colors; or two 4096x2304 (4K) external displays at 60 Hz with support for millions of colors. It supports both extended desktop (second workspace) and video mirroring (internal display duplicated on the external display) modes."
Guess for gaming you want to have a windows install on it. For that I just learned you want a **internal** SSD for easy installation. External USB-C SSD might be doable also, but quite a bit more complicated for the Windows OS install (no bootcamp support for ext. SSDs, Windows installer also does not like ext. SSDs).

iMacs use curved aluminum and that’s hard to do… like really really hard unless it’s mass scale and custom grain

I run Ubuntu on my 2010, because it doesn't care that apple phased out Intel.

Love mine but it seriously chokes out of the box. Just consider it as in need of that 100+ upgrade and you're pretty good.
i wished i had saved my money. I had it since 2017, its always been slow. I should have read the reviews first. this thing is good for RUclips only
Guess you have the version with HDD or Fusion Drive. Pure SSD is quite a bit faster.
im going to check
