  • QUEST 23: RABY CASLTLE
On our latest quest we travelled all the way to the north of England, Teesdale, County Durham and over the border to Scotland.
On previous quests, for those of you following and joining the dots, we have hinted to the relevance of the Neville family and here Alek explains in more detail on the bloodline and his connection to it. The bloodline travelled from the Celtic Lands to Raby Castle, before the castle was sold to the Barnard family, which Alek aptly explains.
We were not able to film inside the castle but did manage some good photographs which will be appearing on our webpage soon. It was a drizzly yet warm day when we visited the castle; the splendour of it is still for all to see with many tales of knights, battles and family entanglements coming down through time to today. The castle grounds and gardens are beautiful with many walks and a vast deer park.
Please feel free to contact us if you are curious to find out much more about our quests; on an England; on a history you thought you knew....

    Thank you for this video.
Through my father, I’m a descendant of Ralph Neville’s second marriage to Joan Beaufort (from his son, Edward Neville, Baron Bergavenny).
On my mothers side, I’m also descended from Ralph through his first marriage to Margaret Stafford, and subsequently from their daughter, Philippe Neville.
There may be other connections that I’m currently following up.
It’s certainly a fascinating period in history and I hope to visit Raby Castle one day.

So interesting. I also descend from the Nevilles through Margaret Neville, wife of Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland. Their descendant, William Farrar, was my ancestor who went to Virginia with Lord de la Warr in 1618. Margaret was the daughter of Ralph Neville, 2nd Lord Neville of Raby and his wife Alice de Audley. I’m also descended from Alice through her first marriage to Ralph de Greystoke, 1st Baron Greystoke down to Diana Skipwith who immigrated to Virginia with her brother Sir Grey Skipwith, 3rd Bart.

Ralph Neville is my 14th great grandfather. I just found this out while I was researching my Irish heritage on Ancestry.com. My 4th great-grandmother married a full-blooded Irishmen by the name of McGuire and I was trying to see if Neville had any Irish roots so I went further back in the lineage. I am related to Ralph Neville through his son Edward Neville, Lord of Bergavenny.

i became familiar with this channel perhaps a year or so ago, upon finding it among research avenues for piecing together certain of my ancestral connections.
immediately i appreciated aspects in the content of this channel, The Second Coming channel, and the Midnight Garden website also, and grew to have a certain deep reverence for the the spectrum of works shared through these three vehicles.
upon further research of my family tree in recent days, i learned that i am a direct descendant of several Neville ancestors, including tho not limited to, Geoffrey de Neville, Alice de Neville, Isabel de Néville, and Isabel Neville, among others. Some of the same names are in both my maternal and paternal lineage roots.
one of the maternal lines stops at Gilbert De Neville and Philicia De Neville, though in time i’d like to fill in those blanks with accurate information. others go deep into time.
Robert fitzMaldred (Isabel de Néville), Maldred Fitzdolphin, Dolfin fitz Uchtred, Ulchtred Dunbar (Eggfrida FitzMaldred), and Maldred fitzMaldred are some names that i recognize from this or related video, and which go deep into time, as is known.
i was both pleasantly surprised, and yet not entirely surprised, to find the Nevilles, among so many others, in my ancestral lines, considering how profoundly attracted i am to what is shared on your channels & website, and how it is shared.
Upon review of other videos on this channel today, i see that i am a direct descendant of another name, in the title of a separate video. I see more and more as time reveals, why i have been so… enamoured with this channel!
thank you so, so much for sharing, to those who contribute to the making of these videos, and to the maintenance of the website and, of the fascinating creation of the works shared among them. Such delightful treasures to behold and to listen to!

It's great to see someone I am (distantly) related to on here sharing knowledge! I, too, am related to Ralph de Neville. I have not done the extensive research that you have, but my understanding is that my most recent British ancestor came to the US around 1650, and he was the second or third son of a baron. I believe his name was John Neville (spelled Nevill at the time), and he landed in North Carolina aboard the Ark of the Dove with his first cousin George Nevill (I do not have my research in front of me at the moment, so this is from memory). Of course, many details are lost and/or confused throughout history, so my information could potentially be somewhat inaccurate. Being in the US also makes it slightly more difficult to research my lineage on the British side. Nevertheless, I've been fascinated with the Neville Family ever since I discovered that I was a descendant of THE Neville Family over a decade ago, as I have always been obsessed with medieval history (particularly British history). If you'd be interested in discussing the topic more, please feel free to send me a message. I was unable to find a way to message you on here, unfortunately, so leaving a comment was the next best thing. Thanks again for the content!
