I remember learning in middle school chemistry class about pH indicators, which are substances which change color based on pH levels. For instance, red cabbage juice is purple when acidic and green when alkaline or basic. Perhaps the magic behind Blow pens is pH indicators? Maybe the clear pen is alkaline and changes the pigment's color by changing its pH?

I remember some other art supplies from this era! You could do a whole series on them
There was
- Floam, that weird sculpting clay stuff
- Bendaroos/Wikki Stix, those weird sticky pipe-cleaner-esque things
-Spiral stencils that used plastic cogs
-Beddazzler
-Scratch art (those silver or rainbow sheets covered in black, so you draw/scratch the sheet to reveal silver or rainbows
-Sand art bottles
-Lite Brite, where you put plastic pegs in a board that lit up
-melty beads

I had the blow pens as a kid. My parents took them away after I made a colorful grid directly on the window by blowing through the screen panel. In my defense, it looked cool as hell

I still have my Rainbow Art kit! I can confirm that it was a lot harder to use than advertised. A simple rainbow was doable, but forget about those designs. You needed the perfect amount of water, or it would be too runny. The colors would mix, and you'd have to rinse the brush constantly. But look--pretty rainbows!
Omg I have such fond memories of carrying my blue doodle bear to my grandma's house and serving it tea! And I had the blow pens too! Funnily I kind of forgot that they ran out quickly until you said that and I distinctly remember being disappointed they did that when I was a kid. Ohhh the memories

I still have my doodle bear!!! I never washed off the messages that were written on it from the day I was gifted it, because people wrote nice 'happy bday' stuff. Still readable to this day!!!
My favorites from the late 80's and early 90's were the spirograph and spin art. I still remember the mess I made with that spin art machine lol.

I had a purple doodle bear
I never had a doodle bear but I had a lalaloopsy doll that was completely pitch black and it came with markers to draw on it then wipe it off so it reminded me of the doodle bear

Aww doodle bears. I still have mine from when I was 4. It’s been through a lot but after 2 decades it’s still in pretty decent condition and sits in my library now.
I have a challenge for you Rae:
Step 1. Buy a plain rubik’s cube with no color just white
Step 2. Look at all your paintings
Step 3. Paint those paintings on the squares on the rubik’s cube
(P.s. buy a giant rubik’s cube so you have space.)

Man, I remember all of these. What a nostalgia trip. For whatever reason, the "changing colors" thing was a HUGE thing in the 90s and 2000s.

You are supposed to swatch all of them on one brush so they mix a little
Red plus yellow equals orange yellow plus blue equals green so technically you are getting a Rianbow

I remember a commerical it was like for realistic artist. So it's has something to reflect what your drawing, then it comes on your paper so you can trace it. Don't remember what it's called though.

I used to have one of those. Got it for my birthday or something. Does what it says it'll do, but it only works well for small things since it's so hard to adjust and a small movement could throw it off

I love how enthusiastic you are about these, and how reasonable your expectations are. I've definitely seen people do similar stuff and complain about paint quality, etc. You're right, they're for kids, no one is going to put the best quality paint in a kids' art set!
As for how the color change markers work, there are lots of dyes that are pH sensitive, and so if you have an acidic solution in your color change pen, you can change from whatever color it is when the ink is basic, to whatever the acidic color is. Cool stuff!

Oh my goodness!!!! I feel so old! I had one of those doodle bears as well when I was little!
I remember having a doodle bear, the original brand, she was white with a little pink skirt on. She came with her own markers and was made of "regular" fabric, felt thick. She washed out just fine until she was a couple years old. I loved that thing so much!! Mine looked quite different than this one but it was amazing
If someone ever asks me who my favorite artist is and why, I'll show them this video.

Awww.... I am FULL OF NOSTALGIA. I remember making artwork with BloPens with my siblings during rainy days at the beach. We also had magic color-change regular markers which were SO FUN except the blender would get stained. :P I had a Doodle Bear, too! Thank you to my parents for indulging us with wacky crafts. Aww. Aww I had a doodle bear when I was little!! It was a pink bear that was glow-in-the-dark, and it came with two markers and a flashlight pen. It was so cool!! Also you say the bear felt nylon-esque, but mine felt like a rougher canvas material
I'm an early 2000s baby (2002) and when you pulled out the doodle bear a whole ass WAVE of nostalgia came over me. I think I'm going to have to track a couple down and get one for me and my daughter. I loved my doodle bear so much! I kept her for like 15 years or something before she completely fell apart.

Wow! Thanks for this video - it reminded me of a drawing toy I LOVED as a kid. I was a little snobby about art supplies (didn't use the numbers with paint by numbers - drew extra stuff or used weird colors etc. with coloring books) but I really loved Spirograph toys. I used them constantly and asked for those 4in1 pens to use with them. Unfortunately I had a little sister that also liked them - and lost them and a little brother who liked breaking stuff.

I knew some kids my age that never saw these commercials because they either weren't allowed to watch UPN or the WB on Saturdays, or their parents couldn't afford the channels that these commercials came on. Maybe that was you?

OMG! i had those exact same blow pens and omg you ended your fun with a headache, but it was totally worth it
