  • Although slave labor created the economic basis of U.S. agriculture, the long-term effects of racism and systemic discrimination from U.S. Department of Agriculture programs continue to sideline African American farmers from land ownership.

With the cost of living going up, it kills me that such an honorable profession such as yours is offering less money to you. I am so sorry. In essence, I love your passion and it was gut wrenching to hear you to mention how the VA doesn't help you, banks not supporting you, and you your educational background, and determination for equality. I have a ten acre farm in Big Cove Tannery, Pennsylvania. I don’t know any other black farmers in this area, all the other farmers are of European descent(white). I work as a educator because farming doesn’t pay the bills, also I’m committed to helping my people. It’s unfortunate that we don’t value farming because culturally we’re earth people who are naturally drawn to sustainable organic processes. Culturally we strive to do no harm during our stewardship of the earth we’re entrusted to enjoy during our time here. Unfortunately we’re not leaving a legacy of knowledge or providing our children with the experiences or farming opportunities that some of us enjoyed.
I fought to get this land because my grandparents used to grow crops in the backyard of their Baltimore city home. When we were at their house they taught us how to compost, plant, and grow organic food. Naturally I wanted to continue applying the skills they taught me so I would serve on, or Chair sustainability committees at the colleges I worked for or pushed to create going green curriculum. Finally about twelve years ago I found the right land and armed with a realtor went pre approved by the bank to meet the owner and the rest is history. But had I not been pre approved by the bank several local farmers were trying to make counter offers. Unfortunately our people don’t realize you can farm anywhere, I know one of my former colleagues who happens to be from India grows herbs and tomatoes on their apartment balcony. It’s all about controlling and knowing what you consume, while visiting this place we call earth.

      Good Dawning Da'Jon T.,
      1) Read, It’s not a coincidence that many of the most successful people are readers. You are able to learn leadership principles, finance/accounting concepts, operational structures, and more from diving into books and applying what you learn.
      2) Keep your day job as long as you can. Farming may be your passion, but you still have to pay the bills. If you are trying to work your way towards farming full time, it’s important to make continuous progress toward that goal.
      3) Farming or any business, take time. If this is truly what you want, you have to be willing to put in the daily effort and have patience for seeing the results. Seek to understand, not just go through the motions.
      4) It’s our responsibility to leave this place we call earth better than we found it during the journey.
      5) Farm organic and sustainable food only, even if its containers on a balcony or inside your backyard.
      Enjoy the journey

@Shane Funk, America is the only land we know/have, thus, it is our current and future Physical motherland and we aren't going nowhere.
In regards to your "fly on the lips" comment I am not surprised to hear such stupidity from Americans. Africa is the final frontier, its economies are rapidly growing beyond wildest expectations, hence why the Chinese, U.S, Britain France, Germany, Russia and other nations are all fighting amongst each other for influence.
The only flies that I've seen are those in the Southern United States or in many cases, Skid Row in Southern California, New York and other large metropolitan U.S. cities.
Charity always begins at home, African Americans have been s*** and pissed on from the beginning of our arrival in this country, this video shows just one aspect of how that has occurred.
Our ancestors fought, worked, slaved and died for our rights, I and many like me are not about to abandon what they sacrificed for us to live as we do today.

US should return all the land stolen from Black People and pay restitution to them. America owes its wealth and power to slavery. There’s no way America can repay and repair the damage to Black People that had been slaughtered, tortured, discriminated and used as free labor during the slavery and segregation but as a started they can be given their own land that they deserve to have more than any other community ( besides Indigenous People of America)

We were not ONLY sharecroppers. Free Blacks purchased and owned land well before the Civil War, and some were such large landowners that whites worked for them to help bring in their crops. Read "Bone and Sinew of the Land" by Anna-Lisa Cox about the US' (deliberately) forgotten Black pioneers. There are even videos about it right here on RUclips. Blacks at one point owned more than 15% of the land in the US - more than 6 MILLION acres - equal to more than 9,375 MILES.

Urban Food Forrest gardener here. I encourage all the black people and all people with homes on any size land to garden and food forest. Starting simple and low cost or free as possible. Garden become expensive when you try to make it pretty and perfect. Just let nature do its thing, plant more that what you need and plant what grows well in your area and require low maintenance. The issues of farmers is outside most of the public’s mind but if more black people allow themselves to stop being fooled about living the fabulous life and spending all their cash on shiny things will bring them happiness and discover they can have a modern life and be in touch with nature through gardening, farming will be more within their grasp of an alternative to the mainstream. This is a great video. Hope more people form farmer and gardeners groups, become producers of some thing instead of endless consumers and self sufficient beings.

We need more awareness of this situation. Black investors can be the best customers for Black farmers. If they become the food processors, manufacturers, and wholesale distributors they can help to support the Black farmers by buying their crops. The Black farmers can lease a portion of their land to these Black manufacturing and processing companies and sell them solar or wind power or the use of water mills for their energy needs. Migrant workers or non violent former inmates can provide affordable labor. Black agriculture students can also provide labor through paid internships. All of this should be subsidized by our government. We also need Black owned grocery stores, and pharmaceutical companies. One company sells a solar powered water producing unit that makes up to 20,000 liters/day. And solar powered drip irrigation systems would be economical and waste less water & energy. But at least the Black farmers and manufacturers need their own water wells or water recycling equipment. Their tractors, trucks and other vehicles and equipment should be given to them or leased with a rent to own agreement. They need to be electric, solar powered, or run by cheap alternative fuels. The demand for meat & dairy products is much less nowadays. So Black farmers should consider growing more soybeans oats, corn, peas, wheat and almonds for vegan food manufacturers. Some of these ingredients are also integral to the non-food industry. Also, Black farmers need to produce and patent their own seeds. THIS is where reparations should start. Helping Black farmers, businesses, industries, and communities become more self sufficient via ownership!

Most Black people that came to the North from Southern states knew how to farm and work with machinery. They could build houses too. These skills weren’t passed down to their sons. Until we got cars with computers black men could repair cars or make a part it needed. Black people need to go back to farming. Black people that stayed on farms in the South are doing well today in the town I’m from.

I did not know the government did that to those farmers.
I do know that today $50,000 isn't shit when it comes to farming. If you (the government) admitted that they did discriminate, they fucked them over again by that inconsequential amount.

I'd also like to mention how we all need to start growing food, it doesn't have to be a large scale operation, but we are heading into a grand solar minimum. Crop production is going to change drastically due to these weather patterns that the grand solar minimum. Food prices are going up, while crops loss is a reality not many are aware of or talk about until it's TOO LATE... information you can easily find if you seek the truth...

THIS! There are other specials that do. I can't remember the names, but one that comes to mind is about land owners in the Carolinas, or possibly Louisiana, and how many have lost their land due to intentional tax increases designed to clear people out to make way for land development for tourism and getting people with partial ownership interest in family-owned land to sell their rights to developers for the same reason. Very sad. And wrong. But these are the better, more informative stories to tell. We need to know WHY things happen so we can step in and correct them. There are groups dedicated to helping ppl in the situations I described, but not many people know about it and the groups are volunteer and resource strapped.

This is a feel good story. I love farming. I am convinced I was born to be a farmer. The reason I don't farm is simple economics. Even if you are a specialty farmer you will probably earn more money flipping burgers if you add up all the hours spend developing the farm.
Now, if I inherited lots of money then I would be a large scale farmer. Since that isn't happening I have chosen a different career and I do have a community garden. In this garden I produce lots of greens, peppers, okra, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, etc.
