I think Frieren did accidentally therapy for Fern: Heiter just died. A fresh start in a new city could help get over that loss, but they ended up staying over 6 months, giving Fern structure as she grieves. For 4 years, Heiter & Frieren were basically Fern's parents, so now Frieren has to adjust to being on her own with Fern.
7:17 yeah you're spot on. Heiter knew that there wouldn't be spells like that in the book, but knew it would take her long enough to fully decipher it for her to train Fern.
This episode had several excellent examples of symbolism with Himmel as Sky. When Heiter fell, we saw the massive rain storm. Himmel was crying. When Heiter tells Fern about his lost friend in the flashback, the backdrop is a clear blue sky. When Frieren finds the Blue Moon Weed, she is framed against a beautiful sky, showing Himmel is with her and happy.
BTW Frieren is technically a "Shonen" and the manga runs in "Weekly Shonen Sunday" the fourth biggest manga magazine in Japan. Which only shows that all those labels like "Shonen" or "Seinen" are pretty meaningless in the end and just the story being told is what counts.
Hello @ogami7661 I would say that seinen or shonen are more of a target audience than anything else (Manga first appear as chapters in magazines with those target audiences after all). And that, with time, they incorporated a number of story telling elements/tropes, some kind of "markers" I would say (not sure if the word fits) expected to match those audiences' taste. I agree with you that Freiren is technically a Shonen (I also agree on the fact that a good story is a good story, no need for categories). If we were strict with the sub genre elements, I would say that it is a fantasy shonen that mainly bridges the gap to the "slice of life" sub genre.
I also thought this was just going to be about Fern growing old in the blink of an eye but this series has much more to say than how Frieren experiences time and life. The series is just taking it's time with set up. There is going to be a full plot and full caste and so much world building. Because Frieren is so old the world building is mixed with fleshing out Frieren since she witnessed a lot of history.
Iirc. at the end of episode 4 (episode 1-4 was originally released together as a "prologue" setting the objective of the journey) Fern is sixteen years old. Those episodes together forms a mini story arc. Similarly for episodes 5-6 and episodes 7-10
The show is so well written that every question you may have will be answered! Joining your channel for this journey of a life time since i really like your discussions and thought sharing.
The 2nd bottle poured on the grave is the one which Heiter had when he met Fern. Since that day he stopped drinking. She show is full with a lot of small details which are either relevant in next episodes or just make the journey more colorful. Your reactions are insightful ! I am joining you on this beautiful emotional journey
"Since that day he stopped drinking." There is some contradiction to this assertion. Spoiler alert. Spoiler Why did Heiter once tell Fern that alcohol was the best medicine? Seems like an excuse when Fern caught him drinking at his house. After that incident, he could have quit drinking.
Me: I wonder why they are in a constant state of doubt and impending doom when it clearly is a very feelgood story *goes to channel and see that you guys tend to react only to Shounen/Seinen* ahhh they are traumatized, got it.
Started reading this a couple years ago after catching up on where JJK was at the time. Was so doomer pilled at this point time I thought the meteors were some awful alien things, Heiter wanted to take over Ferns body up until the events in episode 5 I was waiting for the turn. Really a healing story after stuff like JJK, Demon Slayer, ETC.
Big part of the feelings this show evoke is 10x to the godlike OST made by Evan Call - Violate evergarden, My Happy Marriage, Josee, the Tiger and the Fish
If you're interested in shows that are a bit more low-key but still very good and worth watching here are a few suggestions: Girls Last Tour, Violet Evergarden, A Place Further That the Universe, Yuru Camp, Land of the Lustrous, Haibane Renmei and Aria.
@@tobototoki Ehh, i would not say it goes "way darker". There are some more serious story arcs but the general feel of the show stays the same throughout. The main theme is still " this is AFTER the big bad was defeated" and how a world of peace looks after that. Does not mean that there is no occasional conflict ( see episode 3) but dont expect some big " we gotta save the world from evil" arc. This is not the show for that.
@@ogami7661yeah, and also we REALLY shouldn't be telling reactors "OOOOOH WAIT TILL YA SEE THIS EPISODE" in general, Like even if you're not giving specifics, it's kind of spoilery
Ahhh gotcha, sorry for the confusion around the 26 years, we clarify that in our ending discussion! We definitely know her name is Fern by the end haha, just took us a bit to have it stick
It's great that a lot of people love this show but damn, they just can't stfu with spoilers.

Well when you put it like that, I feel bad for saying I’d be annoyed being there for 6 months 😂
Only 2 episodes and we are having already 15 minutes discussion sesion. This is really a great show
One of our favorites for sure right now!

We are fully immersed in this show right now and loving every second of it, turned out so different than what we’ve been thinking
Fern has a reasonable reaction to being in contact with an immortal who can ignore time

Excited to check out some of these down the line!
I’m sure you know by now but don’t let Ferns calm demeanor fool ya, she’s a savage underneath it all.
We just watched ep 9&10 and Fern is indeed a savage
