It's important to note that Qual defined the meta. His spell isn't obsolete, it's the mandatory basics and everything else pivots around it. Kinda like how the rifle isn't obsolete in modern warfare.
The Qual scene really sold me on this anime. It demonstrates this is a living world of progress. It isn't some static setting of hidden or forgotten lore being the most powerful
"She wouldn't put Fern in that position." Oh... I think you'll find that she would. She loves Fern, but she's not too sentimental to trust in her ability, and she knows exactly what Fern is capable of. In that scene with Qual, Fern definitely got the job done, but you'll notice that she was on her knees, completely exhausted, at the end of the fight.
Fern made butterflies for Heiter in previous episode so her hair clip is also butterfly. I don't know what is the symbolism behind it but there is such for sure. Also passage of time and it's aspects is major theme in the show.
in case u didn't catch it in episode 2 do a quest to get her a spell to make sour grape, and in this episode eisen said he like to eat sour grape. this kind of subtle things that makes this anime more enjoyable
17:38 "it'S definetly not Himmel" you pronounce it correct right there. At least if you try to prounounce it like a german would with the names being german and all
It's about regret. Frieren regrets that she never really got to know her party even though they traveled for 10 years together. Himmel's death drove this home for her, and the journey is her way of honoring the memory of Himmel.
Not a spoiler, but the first season explains much of what you are wondering about with Frieren. It will take time as it's delivered carefully and thoughtfully.
They never have a lot of money because for most of these adventures, Frieren asks for grimoires for compensation instead of money. 😅 A good real world equivalent of the passage of time is that there's less than 100 years separating the Wright Bros first flight & landing a man on the moon. Qual was simply left behind.
How do the make money : If you could hire mages to do some work in 10 minutes yhat Would take whole day normally wouldn't you? We saw them doing exactly that last episode. Sometimes they get paid in money. Sometimes they get paid in spells

oh that's a great point! thanks for this

Nah but forreal, it just takes the show to another level of quality for me

This will become super clear in a few episodes, but that's all I'll say because no spoilers. 🙂
Lmao Frieren the savage especially after watching ep 10

I think the symbolism is just that her life is short but beautiful like a butterfly compared to Frieren living essentially forever.

"Why did she come here to ask about desserts" - A few seconds before this scene someone told her to go there to ask about desserts.

Qual just got power creeped!

You know my favorite part of this episode was when I realized that Himmel is also Bakugo in MHA 😂
Thank you for sharing 😊

Most names are german, pretty neat to know their mening, and as far as I understand they are pronounced correctly by the actors in the show.
I love your discussion very much!
Kinda funny she said she would wait for episode 14. Come back to this after you watch that one xD

Qual, Training Dummy of Corruption 😅
5:48 The pronunciation, Himmel, means sky, but Himo sounds like a terrible man who parasitizes women sexually and financially and lives off them.
