DIY paint matching my bumper with SPRAY CANS... (e36 build part 4)

  • In today's video, we finally paint the e36 bumper! I go through the entire paint matching process using ONLY spray paint cans (rattle cans) -- everything from primer to base coat to clear was done DIY with spray paint. Was this the most efficient way to paint my new bumper? Probably not. Anything larger than this e36 m3 bumper probably doesn't make sense to paint with rattle cans -- if you're doing an entire DIY spray can paint job on your car, good luck.
    I hope you enjoy this episode of the e36 build! Paint matching this bumper definitely completed the look of the car, and I'm glad we could get some morea green paint sprayed on the e36 bumper. If you haven't seen last week's video, make sure to check out the unboxing, installation, and review of the amazon m3 bumper first. Then, this painting video will make a lot more sense :)
    See you next week!

    Hopefully someone sees this.
    2K clear contains isocyanates, there is no filter mask that can remove isocyanates (the odor threshold is 10x higher than the toxicity threshold), you must use a fresh air system. And since skin exposure is also toxic, you need a full face mask. 3M's website will confirm this.
    Isocyanate exposure is cumulative and permanent, and doesn't need to cause a severe reaction to cause problems down the road.

    • @knownaschubbs
      @knownaschubbs Год назад

      Another thing to help with fumes and all that would have been to get a cheap box fan from wal mart and one of the big air filters ( so you don't destroy the fan and whatever is outside the fan) and just put that behind what you're painting and have it blow out of the "booth". Used to do that with a big tent when I've painted most of my other car parts.

      Hey, what do you mean by fresh air system?

    • @minutiesabotage
      @minutiesabotage 5 месяцев назад

      Fresh air system means that air is pumped into your mask by an external source, so there is no need to filter the isocyanates. Usually this is an air compressor located away from where you are spraying (though you could use a SCBA tank or O2 tank). If you use your standard garage compressor, you do need a series of filters to make the air breathable, as there is usually oil mist in the output. @@ronanoconnell9518

    I replaced the bumper on my truck a couple of weeks ago. My son ran into something so we had to do lights and stuff too. It was also about 150. Thee stuff I used wasn’t so bad. I think it was Duplicolor . My husband built me a paint tent, and I got it done in no time. It was little cold on the day i painted it. So I used my hair dryer to warm up the bumper and then spray it. Then I dried it. I think that was your issue. Temp wreaks havoc on spray paint. Be glad it didn’t come up cloudy. I think your work is beautiful. I love the color. It looks better than the original bumper. Much more stylish. After not too long you won’t notice the color difference. (We also got most of our parts from amazon. It looked like we were having a car delivered to our house piece by piece!)

      haha thank you for the kind words! My “booth” definitely could have been warmer, great idea with the hair dryer. It sounds like your project went super smoothly all things considered and i’m glad to hear the truck is back on the road - i’m sure you saved a boatload over going to a body shop :)

    Wow looks great. Came out better than the expected a porch paint job! Where can you get paint matched paint in a can? BMW paint code?

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад +2

      thanks so much dave - Porch paint jobs are severely underrated. I looked at tons of options, but if you just google your paint code (i.e. “BMW 288 morea green spray paint”) you should find a number of providers who custom mix + inject into a can. Apparently they mix up a custom batch when you order, then use a special tool to throw it in the aerosol can with the propellant.

    Have a few question:
    1. The bumper is already primed, why did you put in another primer coat?
    2. How many base coat and clear coat did you put in?
    3. Do you need grease remover or will IPA work just fine

    • @jonathanwiliusa5682
      @jonathanwiliusa5682 2 года назад

      Also did you figure out the wires on the bumper? I’m confused i have 2 different wires connecting to the bumper thats similar to yours

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад

      Good questions.
      1. It was raw plastic, no primer comes on this one. some other aftermarket bumpers come with primer, but they’re usually grey and the primer isn’t the best.
      2. I believe I did 3 layers of base and three coats of clear. Base were light coats, clear were relatively heavy gloss coats.
      3. IPA should be ok, you’ll just need something to remove solvents and finger grease. If not, the paint will fail over time. Wax and grease remover is cheap enough in bulk that I’d recommend just spending the extra $10 to get some (plus, you’ll have some for other projects - useful stuff).
      Hope that helps :)

      @logan-taylor  2 года назад

      I think i did 2-3 coats of primer (specifically the stuff for plastic panels/bumpers) and 2-3 coats of base color - but coats of color kind of depends on how opaque your paint color is and what primer you have underneath, so I went by eye until there was no primer showing through, then 1-2 more good coats on top of that.

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад +1

      I think I did it with three cans - kinda depends how opaque the blue is (i.e. how easily will it cover your primer) but I would think 3-4 should get you ample paint thickness.

    • @logan-taylor

      unfortunately there’s no direct kit - I just sourced these main components:
      - isopropyl alcohol
      - wax and grease remover
      - scuffing pads
      - adhesion promoter (1 can)
      - flexible primer surfacer for bumpers (2-3 cans)
      - your paint match base coat (2-3 cans)
      - your clear coat of choice - i used 2k very carefully (2-3 cans)
      - tack cloths
      - a heavy duty respirator :)
      It would be cool if someone had a kit, but i opted to build one myself. Hope this helps!

    how did you put the fence on the bumper

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  Год назад

      try some wire twists! Kinda like these: amzn.to/3SkLhyQ then just find the right size (pretty small) twist them on to the tiny mounting rods inside the bumper to hold the grill in place. They haven’t let me down yet.

  • @scowen5392
    @scowen5392 2 года назад

    how do you put on the grill ??? struggling rn

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад +1

      that is a great question - If you have the tiny metal crush washers that come with, press the grill into its corresponding pegs from behind the bumper, then one by one use some needle nose pliers to press FLAT on either side of each washer to push it over it’s peg. Push each one all the way down so it holds the grill in place. honestly it’s an awful system, so another option would be to literally melt each plastic peg and bend it over to hold the grill in. no matter what the mounts are pretty dodgy

      @@logan-taylor i have two that came in a little bag the black or silver ones ?

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад

      ok if i’m remembering correctly, the black washer goes on the peg first, then the silver one presses over the peg behind it to hold it all in place.
