  • In this week's video, I try to rebuild my BMW e36 single VANOS instead of taking it to a mechanic. VANOS on older BMWs is big weak point for these engines, and I wanted to get some torque back in my M52 :) Big shoutout to Beisan systems, I'm very happy with the products.
    For anyone who wants to know what is VANOS, here is what the internet had to say:
    "The first-generation single VANOS system adjusts the timing of the intake camshaft to one of two positions - e.g. the camshaft is advanced at certain engine speeds. VANOS was first introduced in 1992 on the BMW M50 engine used in 3 and 5 Series. In 1998 single infinitely variable VANOS was introduced on the BMW M62 V8 engine."
    I hope you enjoy this video! This is not a tutorial/instructional video, so please work on your car at your own risk :) See you next week!!

    Nice work on the vanos rebuild! I think you saved $1500 and made at least that much in experience. Keep it up!

      Thanks Dave - it was definitely a stressful but useful learning experience. Looking forward to not doing it for another 100k miles.

    Nice job on the video. I appreciate the humor to lighten things up. Congrats on a job well done. Your video is very informative and helpful for when I need to do my vanos. Thanks again for putting all the time in on the project! Please list the parts and part numbers.

      sure thing! Glad it was somewhat helpful. If you’re doing a single vanos e36 (i.e. later m50, m52, s50/s52) it all should be the same parts (but don’t take my word for it, definitely double check). Go on Beisan Systems’ website and check out these item numbers: BS011, BS012, BS093. Those are the seals, rattle kit, and 18mm socket (check if your engine is 17mm, Beisan also has that) which all should run you about $73. All other parts are optional and you should get from your preferred supplier, but i would HIGHLY suggest replacing the vanos gasket, VANOS crush washers, and all valve cover gaskets. Part numbers are different for all those depending on manufacturer, but try FCP euro. They verify that the parts you’re ordering fit your exact model, so you shouldn’t have any issues with comparability :)

      Got it all fixed. Bought a rebuilt unit and put it in. One day took about 6 hours (2 people) because we took our time. My motor for some odd reason doesn’t have the teethed gear with the marker indicating top dead center lol so we made sure it was compression stroke and that the cam locks were flat and worked out fine. I came back to this video about 30 times.
      Was a blessing in disguise that my friend actually cracked the unit. Now I got my new spark plugs in, new valve cover gasket, and rebuilt vanos. As for results i took it on a short drive and didn’t really beat on it because I still have some things to tidy up but it drives so much better. Definitely pulls hard.
      Thank you again cheers to having ballsy old beamers 🤌🏼

    also be careful with wd-40 ~ it is not a lubricant! it dries into a gummy film ...

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад

      ah yes didn’t address that in the vid - i had the same concern, so didn’t use any sort of lubricant in the little pinhole. it gets blasted with oil basically as soon as the car gets turned on, so just sent it :) thanks for the pointer on wd40 though, it’s fine stuff for around the house and water dispelling tasks (hence the name) but I practically never use it on the car - there are much better options for most tasks.

    M8, did you figure out the fuel smell from the valve cover ? Because I have the same problem

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад

      Great question, no not really. I did an oil change recently and it wasn’t as bad after fixing vanos, vacuum leaks, fuel filter, and some other stuff - do you have a rough start/idle? If your engine ever misfires there could be just a tiny bit of unburnt fuel making its way into your oil via the cylinder walls. I’m no mechanic tho, so take my thoughts w a grain of salt lol

    • @lolzaga1661
      @lolzaga1661 2 года назад

      @@logan-taylor luckily it doesn't misfire, but I do have a fuel control, fuel trim codes. No idea why . I did smoke test and fixed the leak. Idk what could be the next thing . Thanks for the reply though

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  2 года назад

      @@lolzaga1661 weird.. my last idea would be to just check fuel pressure at the rail to help isolate the problem. It might point you towards a fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator (although it sounds like you’ve probably already tried stuff like this). I did a video kinda recently that included changing the fuel filter and it cleared up so many problems. Best of luck with the fix!!

    What if my vanos does not make noise. Also replaced the crank position sensor (hella) still throwing crank code. Gonna check timing after I replace with a OEM crank sensor. then check timiong then rebuild the god dang vanos. a part of me just wants to buy a mr vanos unit vs me rebuilding.

    • @logan-taylor
      @logan-taylor  10 месяцев назад +1

      for a single VANOS like this the rebuild is actually really straightforward and you can save a ton of money compared to mr. vanos unit! Although both are great options. Also, I've heard mixed things about Hella sensors - I think I just used one for my cam position sensor and it's been fine, but OEM is definitely more consistent. I don't think your VANOS would throw that code (unless I'm misunderstanding), so it's probably a sensor issue or something else, especially if your VANOS is silent.

    • @Vgk36
      @Vgk36 10 месяцев назад

      @@logan-taylor you are right. I just confirmed that vanos won’t throw a crank code. Gonna get the Oem crank shaft sensor. And see what it does.

      it totally could be, but make sure it’s not old belts/tensioner making the sound (that’s a lot easier to replace). If you feel like your car is down in power, it’s probably vanos
