Man I almost brushed this video off... good thing I didn't though. You're explanation of the vanos system, it's common failures, symptoms of each failure, and the breakdown of exactly how each symptom is caused was awesome! Not to mention your editing skills were top notch and your delivery was clear and concise. RUclipsrs take note... or better yet just let channels like this make the content and stop over saturating the platform with shit videos.
Thank you for the compliments! Yeah this one was a video that took a lot of planning and organization, and I used a lot of material from a report I made on the single vanos system in college 😂. I appreciate your support on my work 🙏!
I just want to say I worked in Aerospace with parts thats tolerants went down to the millionths when finished. As far as your concern about sandblasting as long as you use masking tape to protect sensitive areas that cant have blasting materials thrown at it. Which is literally what we use to at a shop I worked at that makes $50,000 rear rotor gears for the sikorski Blackhawk helicopter and I can promise you that yes it can handle it. Only thing is you will want to run it through a hot tank after words or other cleaning product pretty much anything to rinse off the dust. In Aerospace we used Acetone, Hot tank (for parts in early stages of machining), mineral spirits, methanol, and isopropyl for cleaning. Typically blasting was only used for pre copper plating for heat treatment and glass bead blasting especially after copper plating was removed. I personally don't think at all blasting should ever be used for cleaning. Blasting is like for surface issues like rust or resurfacing, pretty much using friction to get a smoother surface. Now as far as sandblast for heat treatment goes I have no clue all why they do other than to remove all grease and oils on the surface and to leave the surface dry and protected from rusting before heat treating and they take the shit serious too like when you sand blast for heat treating you have to use gloves to put the parts away when you are done and even wrap them in paper to avoid cross contamination from the surface they were packaged in. Thought I should add that any time you use a sand blaster keep in mind that you are removing STOCK as well from the part and in areas where the tolerance is tight that can have some really bad consequences if you blast some parts for too long or too many times
I have a 98 323i and I've been having issues with no power under about 3k. I replaced my crankshaft and camshaft position sensors which fixed it for about 2 to 3 weeks and its right back to not working again. I'm gonna give this repair a shot.
Fabulous video. The way some mechanics talk about the VANOS system, it just about scares you. Your concise description makes me realize that it is something I can tackle myself and that it is actually quite a simple system. Thank you so much for your wonderful video. I am definitely bookmarking this one.
Hello. Thanks alot for your nice video. I could solve a stuck vanos issue with that. The guys before was putting in the spring and coil wrong way so it couldnt work.. also i want to link an video which allowed me to change he seals of the single vanos without touching the timing it works good but is a bit tricky with the screws inside. Its found with seraching " Rebuilding E36 M52 Vanos the "WRONG" way! No Re-timing needed! || E36 Turbo Build [Ep. 8]" its not the wrong way just without taking the vanos completly off. for me it worked good. Thanks alot for your video again.
Great video I recently done a rebuild of the vanos unit and it’s still suffering with poor idle and when checking the code it comes back saying vanos mechanically stuck any ideas??? I would really appreciate any answers thanks Nick!
You are the man. I did all the maintainance involved with the vanos with great results. I did a crappy video aswell explaining all that stuff but never uploaded to youtube. I think I will keep it this way. It was in spanish BTW. Great work!
Gra8t job on full explanation . My only question, does the outer gear that's on the vanos needs to be aligned with the cam gear , because I can pull the vanos unit without a cam locking tool and I can reinstall the vanos with a slite movement of crank bolt back and 4th to where the vanos gear goes in to the cam gear smoothly .
Going to replace my cam shaft sensor and had to take the vanos unit cylinder off but I snapped it so I either need to replace it (which I probably will) or I need to try and find someone to weld it back on for me
Good to know, I plan on buying a used N73 V12 from an E66 (760li) that I would like to rebuild, I know that they are a very complex piece of machinery, but that’s what I like about them. I used to own an E38 (750il) with the 5.4 liter SOHC V12, no VANOS though. That N73 is probably the closest to the S70/2 that was only used for the McLaren F1, possibly the best V12 engine BMW ever built.
one of few informative videos out there that actually explained all I need to know about vanos,,, have a question?- is there a recommended time interval you would absolutely advised on overhauling the vanos? I have 2004 with barely 50k miles-runs smooth no issues with power or torque, no rattle, no strange sounds,,, however age wise it is getting close to being 20 years old
Nicely done young star. I've recently acquired an m52 to keep my m54 company. I look forward to seeing the differences in the 2.8 throttle cable initiated motor and its electrical throttled 3 litered brethren.
I do not, but I recommend checking out my friend Quinn's channel M3nace 🤘. He has a ton of useful diy videos and I believe he's made videos with vanos work too 😎
Those couple washers that sandwich the bearings, are they specialty or can you just replace them with some generic washers from the hardware store? That seems more cost effective than buying the thick ring washer :s
great video, but you have some video that show how remove the vanos from the engine.? What are the correct procedure!? if I have lock, the engine or something? thanks
Great job with the video! Do I need to have the engine in TDC if I wanted to replace that vanos unit with a rebuilt one? Also, what were the torque specs on the screws? Thanks.
Much better to vapour because of the close tolerances required. Also a sticking VANOS solenoid is relatively easily with two Mannol intake cleaner runs each followed by a 100 mile delayed full oil+filter change. This allows the concentrated intake cleaner to break down slightly the dried over aged long--oil change solids.
Excelente! sobre todo por hacer referencias a las medidas de las piezas. Todos cambian piezas sin saber que medidas deben llevar. O si realmente hay diferencia entre la medida de la pieza nueva y la pieza vieja. Muy bueno!
great vid, man. nicely done. i did this myself several years ago with the instructions from Beisan, I wish I had this video to reference when i did the rebuild.
Thks for posting this. My question is about bmw x3 2013 model vanos sulystem is same to this videon or different ? If you any exprience by series X3 2013 please let me know . Regards
Just subscribed your Chanel! Really nice work my friend!!! The fact that you have 2 units to compare themselves and doing the actual work on one of them is the best you can make. I'm doing some research to repair my s50b30 vanos unit. That's from my M3 that I'm restoring. If you're interested, I can give you some feedback after. Good looks!
Outstanding video. Excellent information and presentation. Thank you for posting this. I have a 97 528i with a M52. assume this is the same vanos unit.
Quick question sir. I had my engine rebuilt and the guy who rebuilt it said he rebuilt the vamos as well. I noticed the actuator spring is facing away from the solenoid in this video. I replaced it today but the spring seems to be facing the solenoid. Could that be at fault of the code I’m getting? The code is p1519
Man great video!! Not sure if you check this or not but have a question. I just rebuilt mine and it sounds the same. Very noisy! Does shaving the ring down help with the play? Really Dont wanna but a new unit but man the rattle is annoying. Thank you if you see this
On my 1996 e36 m52 When setting up the sprocket on the intake camshaft and I put all the plates on now what’s left is me tightening the 3 10mm bolts to 10nm. Once I do that and I’m gonna install the vamos when I try turning it with the sprocket tool it won’t move until I loosen the 3 bolts till it’s able to move. Any ideas for me on that? Thank you again
My allround garage is going to fix my blown vanos m50 head gasket on my e34. He is not a certified bmw mechanic. Would one say a non bmw car mechanic can do this as a generic head gasket repair? He does not have that special bmw vanos tool kit.
Hey man! I'd try heating the perimeter of the bolt with a heat gun to try and expand the thread surfaces. If that fails to help loosen it you get try loosening it with a few gentle bursts from an impact wrench
1 more qestion for you sir . I replaced both timing chains and tentioners and after start up my car had almost the same noise as the car in this video in the link below, what do you think the noise could be? Thanks in advance m.ruclips.net/video/jPE5VtcV-hA/видео.html
Hi quick question , so i have a 98 bmw z3 with a 2.8 and my engine gave out i have a opportunity on getting a cheap 2.8 engine with low miles but it has double vanos , what would i need to make it work ? Since my engine used to be a single vanos thank you
Ill consider it, but right now my BMW projects have been pretty backlogged from my current set of freelance videography work 👌. Beisan systems should have a decent guide for the double vanos replacement
nice clean video super helpful, wish there were more youtubers like you out there, also do you by chance know if the U.S. spec e36 m3 so s52b32 has the same unit, from what ive read on the forums it does???

Honestly I've seen many e36 youtubers but I think your the best very detailed on instructions.
Thank you :)! I appreciate your compliment! I strive to keep getting better!
Ha ha cool man anyways if ever in need of parts from Europe just give a buzz. I do many exports on European cars.
Dude, I'm new to the E36 world, you made the VANOS repair very straight forward! Great video!
Thanks man! I'm glad my content has been helpful for you 😎
Excellent video. Maybe, should mention about left hand thread on bearing retaining bolt.
The detail and editing in this video is on point!!
Thanks man!!

Finally - theory of operation along with DIY repair. Plus, a couple of vendors for the parts thrown into the mix. Thanks!
Just bought a 323ti, this channel is perfect for me as a bmw newbie ;)
Thanks man! Glad my content is helpful!
Dude i dont even own a bwm but wanted to see how vanos works. Your vid was excellent! Thank you.
Hey man thanks for the love! I appreciate your support 😁.
excellent video. I just installed a new Vanos on my 98 e39 today from Dr. Vanos. Already noticing extra power and better gas mileage
Excellent video! I'm doing this on my 95' M3 right now and this is a big help. Thank you!
Many thanks for your video. VANOS rebuilt and no rattle. Old unit had a lot of play
Fabulous video.
The way some mechanics talk about the VANOS system, it just about scares you.
Your concise description makes me realize that it is something I can tackle myself and that it is actually quite a simple system.

Hello, can you send me a video link on how this can be done without timing, only replace the o ring, I would like to do this too
sorry but this video keeps being so useful, i was just wondering wher can i check the torque and specs for the unit
Great video I recently done a rebuild of the vanos unit and it’s still suffering with poor idle and when checking the code it comes back saying vanos mechanically stuck any ideas??? I would really appreciate any answers thanks Nick!
Nicely done Sir. Adding this to my list of “things to do” while the head is off to the machine shop. Keep up the great content.
Got my first e36 328is and didn't know shit about vanos. Thanks so much for your time bro💯💪🏾

Definitely one of the best how to videos. What lube did you use on the bearings during assembly?
Wow! Thank you for such detailed videos that allows us to keep these motors going. God bless!
great video and informative the vanos left hand thread can be tuff to remove once out of the engine have you any cost on new vanos units
Does the oil inlet which supplies oil through the holes need cleaning ?
Nicely done young star. I've recently acquired an m52 to keep my m54 company. I look forward to seeing the differences in the 2.8 throttle cable initiated motor and its electrical throttled 3 litered brethren.
So its basically a transmission for your cam. And did the double vanos fix the bearing system
Very good! I've watched all of your m50 videos. Thanks dude.
Great instructional video, clear, concise and to the point!
Love this video, keep em coming.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoy my content :)
Just got a 95 M3, thanks for the write up, very informative.
You're welcome! Glad I can help 🙏
If the new piston anti rattle ring is not sanded it will continue to rattle?
hi, why its better to use the smaller washer? i dont understand it
Excellent video. Do you have a video that shows how to reinstall the vanos back onto the cam shaft?
I do not, but I recommend checking out my friend Quinn's channel M3nace 🤘. He has a ton of useful diy videos and I believe he's made videos with vanos work too 😎
@@Pawinning Thanks! Those videos had EVERYTHING I was looking for.

Just gave me the confidence to try and tackle this myself. Thanks bud. Subbed! 👍🏼
No problem! Good luck 😎
Liked and subbed. The style, substance and quality of this video is amazing, thank you!
Great content. I really need my vanos oil line replaced for a start.
Thank you!
great vid, man. nicely done. i did this myself several years ago with the instructions from Beisan, I wish I had this video to reference when i did the rebuild.
what about the washers, should i leave them or try to source them?
Dude is thorough, great job bro!
Would a failing vanos cause hard starts? long cranks?
i have bmw e36 320i and why come little bit white smoke smell fuel. and how to overcome them. thank you
Great Video!!! And thank you so much for your explanations!! 👍🏼 💯 🙏🏼
Thks for posting this. My question is about bmw x3 2013 model vanos sulystem is same to this videon or different ?

you mentioned a rattling sound. would that sound only occur when starting the car?
Love your videos! Has helped me tremendously eith my e36 project.
Thank you for your support. I’m glad my content is helpful for your projects 😌
Should I replace my vanos on my 97 m3 , after mechanics said they couldn't figure out why the code wouldn't go away ?
Very nicely put together. I should definitely do mine on the trusty S50. Probably losing good amount of power there.
Outstanding video. Excellent information and presentation. Thank you for posting this. I have a 97 528i with a M52. assume this is the same vanos unit.

Is vanos rattle more apparent when the car is warm?
What an excellent tutorial. Thanks!
is there any difference on an e34 m50b25? noticed on some kits it only lists compatibility with e36
Man great video!! Not sure if you check this or not but have a question. I just rebuilt mine and it sounds the same. Very noisy! Does shaving the ring down help with the play? Really Dont wanna but a new unit but man the rattle is annoying. Thank you if you see this
Great job man, awesome presentation. I will copy some of your technique, you were that good, thank you!
Thank you! I appreciate your feedback!
ayoooo good vid. e38 boi over here speeding in comfort, catch me on them M parallels mobbin thru ur hometown
On my 1996 e36 m52 When setting up the sprocket on the intake camshaft and I put all the plates on now what’s left is me tightening the 3 10mm bolts to 10nm. Very professional, cam i turbo a 320 i automatic ?🤔
I believe so, but I am not sure about what tuning options are available if you are trying to keep the stock ecu
Pawinning cam a chance my ecu ?thanks 🤓
После просмотра сам сделаю vanos...👍👍👍
Получилось ?🤝
My allround garage is going to fix my blown vanos m50 head gasket on my e34. He is not a certified bmw mechanic. Would one say a non bmw car mechanic can do this as a generic head gasket repair? He does not have that special bmw vanos tool kit.
Outstanding excellent video...congratulations on this very clear and well explained tutorial......
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback 👍
Many thanks for your good explanation on vanoes function in BMW .
Happy to help! You’re welcome
The nut that you shaved the 18mm socket for is stuck on my vanos piston. Any idea how to get that open seems to be overly tight.
Hey man! I'd try heating the perimeter of the bolt with a heat gun to try and expand the thread surfaces. If that fails to help loosen it you get try loosening it with a few gentle bursts from an impact wrench
Thanks alot bro will let you know how it goes. Awesome page btw 👍
1 more qestion for you sir . I replaced both timing chains and tentioners and after start up my car had almost the same noise as the car in this video in the link below, what do you think the noise could be? Thanks in advance
m.ruclips.net/video/jPE5VtcV-hA/видео.html
Dang, killer video Pawin!
Thanks man! Hope you’re doing well :)
you should get an N54 project car & do videos on it too
Great video, really enjoyed it and I don't even own a BMW!
Hi quick question , so i have a 98 bmw z3 with a 2.8 and my engine gave out i have a opportunity on getting a cheap 2.8 engine with low miles but it has double vanos , what would i need to make it work ? Since my engine used to be a single vanos thank you
Could you do a double vanos video? It shouldn't be hard for you to find an n46 engine with leaking vanos solenoids to work on
Ill consider it, but right now my BMW projects have been pretty backlogged from my current set of freelance videography work 👌. Beisan systems should have a decent guide for the double vanos replacement
Best video im sooooo glad that discovered you man, keep the good work.
Great video, that's called a bearing race though not a washer
Thank you and thanks for the info 👍
Hey, great video. Where can i get the rapair kit today? link not working anymore :/

100% helpful, exactly what I needed
nice clean video super helpful, wish there were more youtubers like you out there, also do you by chance know if the U.S. spec e36 m3 so s52b32 has the same unit, from what ive read on the forums it does???
Jc Finch yes, it does. The s52 is actually a bored out euro 2.8 m52. So same running gear for vanos.
Subscribed. My M3 is about ready for some vanos love.
good luck with your work!
gr8 video am doing my vanos unit soon very help full thanks
No problem! Thanks for watching 🙏
FYI: The video actually starts at 3:00
hello , hell of a video. love it will watch again and again. only question that did have. what did you torque to spec? The outside cover plate? or the torx screw inside the unit? and what were those torque specs i would greatly appreciate it.
My man! The Si/e36 combo !!
That was awesome. Great presentation
Can somebody clarify something for me.... is this vanos housing aluminum? Or what material is this vanos housing made off?
Hola. I have 2000 BMW 323i e46 engine, does it have single or dual vanos? Thanks!
How is the build coming along? Looking forward to the block getting put back together
Build is halted at the moment due to funds. College loans come first 😂
Nice job on your explanation with disassembly procedure! Just a quick question, are you experiencing a check engine light or are you hearing noise when deciding to rebuild unit? Or is this part of the tear down of the engine re-build? Nice job.
great video dude. helpful :)
one small question: this unit is on US base model e36 3 series, and also US M3's ... correct?
Excellent explanation dude!
I would like to know if I need to do this on my m50
If the vanos is making noise an unordinary noise what is the problem then ?
Nice video. Alot useful info. Thanks and keep on going!
Awesome video !!! Solid information thx 👍🏼🎉👍🏼🎉
Thanks! You're welcome 🤘😎
