Golden Axe is a side-scrolling, beat 'em up, hack and slash arcade video game released in 1989 by Sega for the System 16-B arcade hardware. It is the first game in the Golden Axe series.
Makoto Uchida was the primary developer of the game and also was responsible for the creation of Altered Beast. The game was ported to the Mega Drive/Genesis and Master System, among others.
The game where it all began for Ax Battler, Tyris Flare and Gilus Thunderhead as they set out together again a common foe... Death Adder for the Golden Axe... the game's a classic and I played through three times with all characters to show off their various skills, techniques and what not. -

This game takes me back. I used to always go the Dwarf. My friend usually went the barbarian, only this time, I decided to try out the Amazon woman. When I maxed out the magic and used it before I died, neither of us were expecting her to summon a dragon and burn everything.
Ax=Battler: The Barbarian - His mother was killed by Death=adder.
Tyris=Flare: The Amazon - Her father and mother were killed by Death=adder.
Gilius=Thunderhead: The Dwarf - Got drunk, wanted to hit something.

The sounds of the guys dying "AAAEeeeAAAUUHHHH" always made me laugh.
The really changed it in Golden Axe 2. "Pleh"

Yeah, that makes sense.
It kind of does make sense if you want it to; he is either a battler that uses an ax, or a battler with a history of defeating opponents who use axes. If that’s the case he could use any weapon.
Battles people who have axes. Makes perfect sense.
Maybe he had issues with his parents and after several years away at preparatory school realized that living up to his birth name wouldn't result in the best weapon of choice for defeating the evil, which coincidently had killed his parents whilst away boarding. The fateful information was to be delivered by Alex who was also killed shortly after in an unrelated incidence. Avenging his friend became the reason for taking up the sword and restoring peace to the land.

The Ax Battler is the weakest among three. I seldom to play him.
I grew up playing this game and it still holds up really well today ,too bad none of the sequels could match it.

My God I remember playing this game on the Genesis when I was barely even 5 years old. I sunk so many hours into it it wasnt even funny.
I stopped playing the genesis for a while and when I went to play it again, I couldn't find the game. I cried so hard because of this.
Now, Im 27, and I've spent the past 22+ years searching for this gem, and now I'm crying because I've finally found the game again.
I didn't remember the name, only what it roughly looked like. Can't wait to play this again after so, so, so, so long.

One of the best games ever conceived by humankind. The arcade version is simply flawless. And this one is not a bad port at all. Totally faithful to the original. Watching this makes me just wanna go play it instead.
It's not totally faithful, they removed the bit with Alex explaining what has happened and then being clubbed to death.
One of my favorite games for the genesis. There were quite a few times where you could have used the special attack to get the enemies behind you. That's pressing the attack+jump button at the same time. Sadly it won't always save you but it's quite useful to know.
Adult life for people in this exact nostalgia time frame is nothing but a lifelong quest:
to find something that gives you the same feeling as baiting 2-3 enemies into diving off one of the cliffs as you play it cool waiting for the Go! sign
Too often though - it is not being able to quite get all the potions from the little potion troll as he runs off and you get like one potion haha

Remember this only being in the arcades and then all of a sudden we had it at home? it was like a dream come true, I miss my childhood so much, These fortnite teens have no idea what is was like to get a super Nintendo or sega mega drive and start actually having arcade graphics at home.

I'm not gonna watch this for 2 hours, but... so many weekends and weekend nights wasted with this game when I was in secondary school. The dwarf had been my favorite toon, and I think I've beaten the game 5 or 6 times within an year... but I don't remember too much from it.

The irony is that I stopped playing this just before getting to "that" stage of puberty.
I used to play Golden Axe in 2014 & 2021 on Sonic's Ultimate Collection on ps3. That's my favorite. Since I beat Streets of Rage 2 & Altered Beast on ps3.

Interesting fact: the 2 skeletons in the final boss fight can in fact be killed, but they both have TWICE the HP as the final boss himself!!!!
When using the special attack (pressing B+C), this has to be done 22 times on the skeletons to kill them. For the boss, it only takes 11 times.
In fact, Death Bringer has the same HP as Death Adder. The difference is that the skeletons in the Death Bringer fight have 5x the HP of the skeletons in the Death Adder fight.
Basically, the skeletons are the true final boss.

Now that compilations are "in" and classics like this are becoming more appreciated by the new generation, why not have one that contains the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd games for Genesis, the arcade version of 1, the fighting game released in the mid 90s, and ESPECIALLY the Revenge of Death Adder?
Revenge of Death Adder has serious emulating issues. Even after 15 years Mame can't properly emulate it without a ton of graphic glitches (especially the shadows) and sound issues. Almost all the Sega System 32 games are a pain in the ass to properly emulate for some reason.
Golden Axe - The Duel should be fine if they use the Saturn version, since the Arcade version also has quite some graphic and sound issues on emulators. The Sega Titan hardware, just like System 32, is not easy to emulate.
I doubt we will ever see a proper running version of Revenge of Death Adder unless they re-program the game from the ground up for modern platforms.

He was an injured soldier at the begining in the Arcade that tells you about the king and princess being kidnapped by death adder then is clubbed to death by a long moan enemy.
They edited the part out in this version.

I know, limitations and all ... but I quite liked the additional levels the Gen/Megadrive added, although I'd prefer Death Bringer to be Death Adder using the titular Golden Axe (hence, power up).

In Golden Axe, I have always wondered what words above some doors mean. For example at 9:38, double doors have "DEB" on a plaque above. Other doors have other letters and numbers.... 🤔

While The Barbarian clearly looks like Conan and the Amazon clearly resembles Red Sonja, Gilius the Dwarf is certainlyan conglomeration of things. this is most likely why he's continued to show up in the other Sega titles and not so much the other two.
I think he's supposed to represent Zeus.
