    Castlevania: Bloodlines is the only Castlevania video game series which was released for Mega Drive/Genesis. It was developed and published by Konami and was first released to North America on June 1, 1994. Its title is the Japanese version of Vampire Killer and its title in the European version is Castlevania: the New Generation. Not long after the death of Dracula, a witch practicing black magic accidentally resurrected Elizabeth Bartley, a countess known as "Dracula's niece" (obviously based on Elizabeth Bathory), who decided to bring his uncle to life. For this, she started World War sacrificed so many souls were available for his evil purpose. John Morris, using the whip "Vampire Killer", and his friend Eric Lecarde, using the "Alcarde Spear", knew it and run to stop Bartley and Dracula again. Played in expert mode (unlocked after ending game one time or with "Konami Code" in title screen: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B and A), with the two characters and with true endings.
    John Morris:
    Stage 1: 02:14
    Stage 2: 08:01
    Stage 3: 15:18
    Stage 4: 22:09
    Stage 5: 29:41
    Final Stage: 37:07
    Eric Lecarde:
    Stage 1: 55:26
    Stage 2: 1:01:31
    Stage 3: 1:08:41
    Stage 4: 1:15:32

      +Troy Turner If it had been for the SNES, it would've been much better received. The details, tightness of controls, soundtrack are actually better than Castlevania IV's. I could listen to "Calling From Heaven" all day

      +FoieGras Heavily disagree, in fact this is by far my most hated Castlevania, I did not like the graphics, soundtrack is not that great for Konami, and the characters. Of course the gameplay is fast, but Castlevania iV is better in every other aspect and is fast in it's own right. PC Engine Chi No Rondo and Symphony of the night are the best Castlevania games. This one I did not care for at all.

    • @FoieGras
      @FoieGras 8 лет назад +32

      CVIV had Simon floating in mid-air for several seconds instead of a realistic jump animation and the whip had like 3-frames or so? Skeletons exploded into a whole bunch of femur bones instead of skull, rib cage, etc like in Rondo (or Bloodlines) Bloodlines is not "faster" but had more fluid animation. This one you'll notice the backgrounds are more crisp and detailed. You also had item crashes but not the crazy item crashes of Rondo but small ones that made the game more fun. The music is quite memorable. Why else would stages 1 and 2's be repeated in later games? IV's had what? Just Simon's theme (which Bloodlines spruced up as well).

    • @ricsim78
      @ricsim78 8 лет назад +14

      +FoieGras Muted colors, limited sound samples, and forgettable characters. You also forget that Super Castlevania IV was an early Snes game. This is a late Genesis game. Yet it still looks, plays better. Sega had a better main CPU, the 68000 was much faster than the Snes CPU, double the MHz back when that mattered. But this game showcases the strengths and weaknesses of the Mega Drive/Genesis. The music shows that Symphonic soundtracks are a weakness of the Genesis. Super Castlevania IV soundtrack is way better and more in line with the series. I do not like the characters or how they move in this. The boss battles are awesome and show a strength of Genesis...sheer horsepower. But SNES and big time Turbo Grafix 16 have two of the best Castlevajiw games

    • @FoieGras
      @FoieGras 8 лет назад +16

      Rick Simon Yeah, which is why I said, I think it would've been much better if it had been for the SNES. This game obviously wanted to be ambitious with its soundtrack as well as as show its raw power (even then there were slow-downs)
      Also Eric! How can you not like Eric?! You no longer have just a generic guy with a whip but a guy who can twirl his spear around and do super jumps.

    Such an underappreciated game in the CastleVania series. Perhaps because it was noncanonical and the fact that it was released on a Sega console at a time when 3rd party developers were only really beginning to produce games for consoles other thanNintendo's, that people's expectations were pretty low. Not to mention, gamer's biases blinded them to the merits of the competing console practically ensured that this game would be overlooked, which is a shame. It's a fantastic game in the series! One thing that always struck me as a kid back then was the fact that there is nary a static background/foreground in this game. Each one has something going on ranging from animated blades of grass, clouds blowing in the wind, lightning, multi-layered parallax scrolling, reflections in the water and other various effects, which made for an extremely rich visual experience. I also like the period its set in (the 1910s); it's still very uncommon to see video games or even films set in that period and it's refreshing to see it. And, as with every CastleVania game of the time, it has outstanding music. I love this game.

    • @RainePhoenix
      @RainePhoenix 9 лет назад +13

      It doesn't feature any of the Belmont family and was made to closer link it to Bram Stoker's novel. It sort of bridged the gap between CastleVania and Dacula in its own continuity.

    • @RainePhoenix
      @RainePhoenix 9 лет назад +2

      It is, but many years after the fact.

    • @RainePhoenix
      @RainePhoenix 9 лет назад +6

      CastleVania Legend is another game released that is now part of its own continuity. Originally, it was to tell the story of the very first Belmont ever to battle Dracula, and it was supposed to get its own sequel in the Dreamcast, but it was sense canceled and Sonia Belmont is no longer considered to have any relation to the rest of the family, and the game itself is considered a "mistake" or "embarrassment" to the series as it conflicted with the established time line

    • @RainePhoenix
      @RainePhoenix 9 лет назад +3

      I'd agree with that point. Konami back then often released watered-down versions of their games on the Genesis, or games that were somehow detached from the rest of the established series they represent. I don't know if it's because they didn't expect many Sega fans would know much or care about the time lines and established stories from the 8-bit era, or if it had something to do with the fact that they were finally allowed to produce games for rival consoles and that they wanted to make something different, yet familiar, but the games released on the Genesis were often butchered ports of their arcade games or else, they were something entirely unique, as with CastleVania: Bloodlines and Contra Hard Corps. Though, Hard Corps did specifically state that it took place immediately after Super C and had a small reference to Contra III, but it was nothing like any other preceding Contra game. It makes me wonder whether they were expecting gamers to own all consoles with their games on them to piece it together for themselves. Whatever the case, it's good that, more than a decade after such games were released, they've been given follow-ups for those who've played the games in the beginning.

    • @BuyMeThingsnow
      @BuyMeThingsnow 9 лет назад +35

      Raine Phoenix Bloodlines is canon to Portrait of Ruin, and the rest of the franchise. The fact that Morris wields the whip and that there is no Belmonts is something they went out of there way to explain in the metroidvania's, stating that a prophechy prevented the Belmonts from wielding the whip till 1999 (when Dracula was destroyed by Julius Belmont). That's their explanation for Bloodlines, as well as other non Belmont protaganists like Shanoa and Nathan Graves (with Circle of The Moon going from "non canon" to "semi canon" apparently).

      I disagree with the music. Castlevania Dracula IV and X are much better at this point! Apart from the sound effects that sound too annoying in Genesis.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 Год назад

      Considering how Konami basically screwed the pooch and tried connecting the series to Bram Stoker's novel, felt like an insult if I may say so (LeCarde I could accept as a CV character, but a Morris from the Stoker Dracula novel, nah). Is this better than the SNES CV's? Yes to 1, but no to the other (Yes to the Rondo remake, but the music in that blows Bloodlines away, and no to CV 4 as it felt more cinematic, and the music more ambient and movie like). Don't get me wrong, Bloodlines is a fine game, fun too, it's in my collection for a reason. But the biggest glaring issues is when Morris or LeCarde climb stairs, the animation for it is all wrong as they aren't walking ON the stairs, but THROUGH them.
      Technically Konami had to later on fix the lore of the Vampire Killer, saying any non-Belmont would slowly drain their life force if they tried using the whip, Bloodlines never even had that idea in mind, and that the Vampire Killer could work for anyone wanting to use it. Then they tried working the Morris family as Belmont descendants, no thanks.

      @@Sega_Dreams For me Castlevania Bloodlines is over Rondo for the Soundtrack and the effects. Also Bloodlines just looks better to me via RGB. The Mega Drive has a clearer and sharper RGB picture than the PC Engine RGB picture which is somewhat blurry compared to the Mega Drive. Most of the time a CD Version soundtrack would beat out the cartridge but not this time IMO. The Mega Drive many of times does a great job on the Music and Bloodlines has some of the best music in the 16 Bit Generation. I also feel that Strider (my favorite game of all time) on the Mega Drive has a better soundtrack than the PC Engine CD Strider. Im a big fan of the PC Engine though its my 2nd favorite game console of all time behind the Mega Drive.

      @@Atariatari-ky9te The PCE CD Strider isn't too highly thought of, unlike Rondo of Blood, which for years was the Holy Grail of Castlevania as we didn't get it in the US till over a decade later. I remember drooling over screenshots in Game Pro for Rondo, and them saying in the magazine that we'd never see it in the US. They were half right anyway, maybe not for the PC Engine/TG-16, but other consoles made sure we did.

    I haven't played every Mega Drive / PC Engine / Snes game yet but so far this is my second favorite game of all time only behind Strider for the Mega Drive. To me it has a more arcade feel than Rondo of Blood and I like to come back to this game more than Rondo of Blood for the PC Engine. It also is the best looking Castlevania game when comparing in RGB between the SNES & PC Engine Castlevania games. Im a huge Arcade fan back in the 16 Bit era and no other machine brought the Arcade Experience home better than the Mega Drive. The Mega Drive has the cleanest and best looing RGB picture when compared to the PC Engine and SNES and most of the time the Mega Drive games have better gameplay as well. Im a huge fan of the TG16/PC Engine and I like the SNES as well but when comparing all three in RGB and gameplay the Mega Drive is the Best 16 Bit system of that Era when looking into detail. The Mega Drive is my favorite system of all time!

      The 16 bit era was truly the best time IMO for the series, with SCV 4, Bloodlines, Rondo of Blood, and yes, even the SNES re-imagining of Rondo. Plus not to long after, the retconned CV Legends on the Game Boy also made it's appearance (still got it boxed, the games worth a damned fortune now, got it when it first came out). On the NES, CV peaked with the awesome CV 3, earlier than the 16 bit era though.
      Of course at that time, over in Japan, they got a game for the X68000 we didn't get till the PS1, under the CV Chronicles name, the X68K version coming out in 93. In CV circles some of us know it as Akdra X68K.

    I was never able to get very far when I was younger.. I mostly remember the water stage and Pisa as a kid. Pisa was probably as far as I'd get as a kid. Eventually I decided to come back as an adult and sit down and put in the grind to beat it once and for all...and man was it a real treat. I LOVED the last stage, it was so good. I loved that effect(similar to the drunk effect in super mario maker) where it breaks the screen up into sections to make the platforming tricky. I thought it was freaking genius game design, I loved it so much. I must have forgot about the upside down section cuz it was pretty short and not as tricky necessarily to get through, but it's really cool as well. You can really tell where SotN got a lot of its inspiration I think...I mean, it even says "Bloodlines" at the beginning of the game. I mean, I always thought it was a direct sequel, but apparently not. I mean, I've been told various times that it's not the case. I guess having "Bloodlines" scroll across the screen like it was the title of the episode for the intro didn't mean anything? :S shrug.

      Great game me and my 8 yr old have got to the penultimate boss . Konami made supreme games on genesis and snes. Still good today. Funny arguments about this vs SC IV on snes still going strong. You can't beat SC IV for atmosphere but bloodlines has faster speed and playability. Put it this way if they were arcade machines you'd shovel your money in segas direction because it's more fun.

    Bloodlines really is an excellent game that showed off what the Genny could do, and had a damn good soundtrack too, Michiru Yamane is a badass. While for me it isn't quite as good as Castlevania IV (it's a solid 8.5 while CV4 is a 9.5), I fully appreciate this gem of a game as a mix of old meets new, and for successfully crossing the franchise with Bram Stoker's Dracula universe to the point where some years later, a direct sequel, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin was created that had so many allusions to Bloodlines that its ties were blatantly obvious, especially when "Wind" reveals his true identity. This game is a true cult classic for sure.

I think these fights are pretty imaginative imo
