  • Driving the Ultimate Spec NEW MST Restomod // Millington Diamond 2.7. Welcome to the new episode, where Jonny Smith heads back to North Wales where MST Cars (MotorSport Tools) manufacture brand new 'Escort' Mk1 and Mk2 restomods to order.
With an engine and gearbox combo worth almost £50,000 alone, this is probably the most expensive spec of road going MST you can order

Am I Wrong to assume cars like this don't really appeal to Americans I mean the escorts and Cortina or whatever else there was all the small Peugeot cars and especially all the British Leyland stuff it's just good that there's so many different cars for people to like there's a lot of the times when you show British people and and they have a huge car collection I'm just thinking to myself I wouldn't really want any of this if I had unlimited money to buy the stuff but then again who gets excited like me to see old pristine lexuses and 80s mundane Japanese cars and cars like a 94 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon a 93 Supra or an 87 Chevy Suburban

Hell, YES!!! AT that price, it's undoubtedly expensive, but the rawness and fun factor is what appeals to me. No computer nannies, no torque vectoring, no electronic diffs, just bring whatever driving talent you have to the table and let 'er rip! As another commenter said, I'd have one of these, a restomod Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, and a balls-out Rally-spec Renault 5 Turbo with around 400 hp. Done.

What a glorious car! Long ago, when we rallied a Datsun SSS, I looked with longing at these machines--and I'm still envious. To hear them beating through the woods at 4 in the morning, with all else silent was amazing. Our local rallye was the Press On Regardless, 1200 miles of vicious roads, spread over 3½ days. Sigh. Those were the days--and this was the car. Thank you for this. I guess you can tell what side of your question I'll come down on...

As a child of the 1970s in the UK I feel that fast Fords are in my blood. I currently drive a latest gen Fiesta ST which isn’t remotely similar to one of these cars but I like to think that a 10 year old version of myself would still approve of my choice! If I had the money I’d definitely be buying something like the car in the video over a Porsche or any other modern super car. I’d probably choose something similar to the car in the video, big arches and spotlights, some modern creature comforts inside just maybe slightly less extreme than the one featured (although I wouldn’t turn it down if the owner changed their mind 😂)

A functioning speedometer apparently is another optional extra. That aside: I'm quick to snuff the hugely expensive restomods we see, but what MST does actually makes sense to me. Such cool cars. For me it would have to be a N/A engine too, perhaps the big daddy but i'm not convinced i need that much power, and with a manual gearbox. I also think i would go for the mk1 body, with the wide arches. That's such a classic/fantastic look.

Kudos to the editor and cameraman on this one Jonny. Looks proper top end stuff. Plus the least chodiest of shifters I've ever seen. Also loving that you've taken styling tips from fuzz townshend😎😎😎

Beautiful! Were my eyes deceiving me, but in every driving scene where the instruments were visible, neither the tach nor the speedometer appeared to be moving?! I noticed, also, that Jonny was doing a great job keeping up with the camera car!

Absolutely beautiful looking and that sound just moves my soul. If I win the lottery before this illness takes me, I'm buying a range rover 1st, only so I can travel to order one of these things of absolute driving heaven. MK2 only because when they were scrap value I had 2. 2 liter pinto in one. Wouldn't go in a straight line on full throttle in 1st or 2nd 😂 I love your enthusiasm, helps us live the moment with you 😊

My first car at 17 was a mark 2 escort, £50 barn collapsed model ,as opposed to barn find😂 £70 reconditioned engine and more than a few hours on the spanners with my late dad, still one of my favourite cars. If money was no object, a new MST would be top of my shopping list👍

Respect to the owner for the spec. I'd love to see the rest of the collection!
Personally I prefer the Mk1 shape and might stick with an H-pattern 'box, but that Millington Diamond is essential. Interior is spot-on too.

Love these cars. Would love to own one some day. It replaced other dream cars on the priority list. Such a mark made. Would take a mk2/duratec/6speed civilian spec, no flares with revolutions. Hope to see one in America sometime too. You rock, Johnny! Happy New Year!

Johnny you are a wonder mate and you're so right, you can keep your modern, over techie cars (super or otherwise) these type of cars are the best 🙌🏼
It's why my 16 yr old son Jack and I love our 1970 MG Midget so much, the driving experience! What's even better, Jack does most the work on the MG, oil changes, filter changes, he's currently swapping out the starter (horrible job) as the old one sheared! TBF it was the original, I wonder if a modern starter would last 53 year...
A very Merry Xmas Johnny and all the followers of this wonderful channel 🎄👍🏼

My favourite sort of car! Absolutely friggin' epic! I did a bit of (cheapo) rallying a few decades back, in a Mk2 with a standard 2L Cortina engine. Absolutely massive fun, so this beastie just cuts all the hottest mustard you could ever want! I'm kind of jealous of you in this instance Mr J. 😁
