- In the lead-up to No Time to Die, we launched a significant series here on JoBlo called James Bond Revisited. In it, we took a deep dive into all of the James Bond films, our favorite gadgets, Bond girls, villains and more. Notably, we also ranked the 007 actors, and now that Daniel Craig’s time as James Bond is over, folks have begun wondering who will slip into 007’s tux and become the next iconic version of Ian Fleming’s super-spy.
In this special episode of James Bond Revisited, we break down the rumors which have Aaron Taylor-Johnson playing the part while also digging into other fan faves, such as Henry Cavill and Idris Elba, who seem disqualified from the role for various reasons. Could they still pull it off? We also dig into some other popular picks, such as Rege Jean-Page and Richard Madden, neither of whom seem likely at the moment, while also giving some wild, out-there choices of our own, including an actor who we think seems born to play the role, former Downton Abbey star/ turned The Guest badass, Dan Stevens.

One of my problems is that many modern actors in their 30s look too youthful and baby-faced. Bond has to look like he’s lived in the world. Daniel Craig and Sean Connery especially exemplified those traits.
I get your point, but I think it just makes it modern. With the advances in... I don't know... self care, fitness, and nutrition, people are living longer and looking healthier. As a result of that, younger people are doing more with their lives than they ever have before.
Besides, Sean Connery was in his early 30s the first time he played James Bond. I don't think it has as much to do with how they look as it does with the kind of gravitas and maturity they can portray on screen.

Hiddlestone in Night Manager was Phenomenal. That series was like 6 bond movies back to back.

Definitely Henry Cavil, age is perfect, he is fit and got all the charm needed to place Bond back in Daniel Craig’s shoes (and perhaps…better.
It's a shame Clive Owen never got a turn as Bond. He definitely would have brought if not more of that edgy Bond that Daniel brought
To be fair Daniel Craig was okay, I think he was overated. I think what really helped him was the fact that Casino Royal and Skyfall were such phenomenal movies, a gift that many other James Bonds did not get, like Pierce Brosnan.
In my opinion Daniel Craig's best performance is in Layer Cake.
Or Sacha Baron Cohen for a lighter Moorish Bond. But I can imagine him being rather intense, too.
Clive Owen was bit too old for Bond and not as good looking for it in my opinion. He was four years older, than Daniel Craig, that was 38, when he got the role. Henry Cavill is now just 40 years old, so I wouldnt say his too old, when he could do like five films as James Bond.

Golden eye was still great movie also. Daniel Craig is just the most recent James Bond actor and thats why his remembered more. In my opinion he was nearly as good actor as Priece Brosnan, but Priece Brosnan movies feel bit old by now, when Daniel Craigs still feel preatty modern. Skyfall didnt have the best plot in my opinion at all, but Daniel Craig took his role seriously, that made the Bond movie great then.
Henry Cavill would also be great choice as the one to finish the pyramid with doing only three James Bond movies, when all the other actors have done diffrent amount of James Bond movies.

Dan Stevens is a great choice. If he doesn't get it, I at least want him doing more action movies. The Guest was amazing.

I'd love to see Henry Cavill but only if it wouldn't delay Highlander even more. For directors I'd like to see Nolan but even more so I'd like to see Matthew Vaughan.

A lot of great options out there for Bond. Anyone on this list. But regardless of who gets the part I would really love to see Idris Elba as a Bond Villain! He could be one of the great villains in the franchise if given the chance.
I think Mr. Elba is deserving (not in a charitable way but because of his acting chops) of any various supporting roles in future Bond installments as he has been considered as a top pick for many years. Humble and multi-faceted, he would be a valuable addition to the franchise.

@@fizz1580Ok fine, you have a point when it comes to race-bending previously established James Bond characters, which I agree with to an extent. I don't really like race-bending and I'd prefer it to be avoided unless it actually makes the story better (so I would like Bond to stay white). But there's no good reason as to why Idris Elba shouldn't be considered to be a 007 villain or supporting character in the future just because he's black, that doesn't even make sense.
@@chocov1233 I should clarify, I think there should be black roles and yes I would love to see a black villan- haven’t gotten one since live and let die and I want to see more black allies. However in my opinion bond should stay a white male himself- as described in the books.

Besides Cavill , none of these other candidates fit the Bond role. I'll go for an actor with different role experience, who are in their 40s. JMO
My number one here has to be Dan Stevens, too. I think, most mainsteampeople dont know him, which can be something good.
I first saw him in Legion and, oh my god, he totally nailed it. He is a great actor.

Seeing "The Guest" Years ago, Dan Stevens was my Fav-Choice as James Bond right away.
I wasn't familiar with Stevens, but he certainly has the look
First name I thought of was Nicholas Hoult, he's young enough, has action credentials with Fury road, Sandcastle and X Men.
Second was Sam Claflin who also has action credentials.
Then I thought Jack O'Connel could work, great actor and the right age.
Michael Fassbender, Tom Hiddleston, Matthew Goode. In that order.
Hiddleston was a great tough guy in Kong: Skull Island.
I really liked Craig as Bond, so it made my stomach churn when he basically said he never wanted to play the role again...UNGRATEFUL! For me it should HANDS DOWN be Hiddleston!! I LOVE Cavill. And it was the saddest thing I heard when I found out he would not be returning as The Witcher, but to me, Hiddleston is the perfect fit.
Idris Elba would make an amazing M. He'd take none of 007's crap.

Based solely on the thumbnail, Cavill should be Bond, and the blonde dude should be Constantine in the new DCU
It's kind of sad how much Tom Holland really really wants to play Bond. I think thats the only reason he did Uncharted was to show off his action chops in fights scenes and stunts. I think it's also why he's done so many strange choices lately and why he's doing the Fred Astaire movie to show off he can play a suave character. But he just doesn't have that grizzled hard edge for Bond. But he just has too innocent of a look which is why I think Daniel Radcliffe could also never really pull off the role.
One person I'd like to see play the role is Ed Speleers, he did such an amazing job on the last season of Picard and he's done action roles before. He has the right look for the part and he's in his mid 30's so the right age for the role. Plus he's a lesser known actor so he's someone who would likely be willing to stay attached to the role for a while.
I don't think Eon is going to choose a big name actor, I think they want someone lesser known who won't have a lot of baggage from other roles who can be groomed into the character.

I know some will say Daniel Radcliffe is a weird choice for Bond but I disagree and think he would fit Ian Fleming's character very well.
A lot of people thought Pattinson couldn't play Batman but now he is considered by many to quite possibly be the best Batman.
I believe Daniel Radcliffe has the best potential to take the character of James Bond to the next level and to be the most Fleming accurate Bond since Dalton and Craig.
A lot of people think James Bond is supposed to be some kind of superman charmer but I disagree.
Fleming's Bond gets hurt a lot both physically and emotionally and that is why he becomes cold and brutal.
I think ATJ and Henry Cavill could be the frontrunners. Both possess the image many envision as James Bond and have shown they are capable of providing humor and action to a character. A period piece with Cavill and Nolan directing could be a consideration. My only concern with a POC is many traditional, long time fans like myself may prefer to have the next James Bond have some form of association with the original novels or movies for continuity Then again, I'm in my 50's and EON Productions may be looking ahead and want to attract a younger audience in addition to retaining the older fanbase. Never heard of Dan Stevens but I'd say he'd be the best pick if the goal was to have as much of a visual arc with Daniel Craig as possible. Who knows, I think what is certain is the actor who successfully navigates through the gauntlet of auditions and makes the most notable impression will be chosen. Even then, nothing is guaranteed.

Henry Cavill, hear me out, He is almost 40, but that Dude is always top in form, even when he will be 55, He still would look like 40!
Aiden Turner of Poldark and the Hobbit fame is the under the radar shoe in for the role. The late Roger Moore thought so too. He is basically on no one’s list or predictions which is attractive to the Bond producers, they don’t like the fans telling them who to cast. Henry Cavill is still perfect. Honestly the best Bonds start off in their early 40s, late 30s… so the whole trying to find a young 30 year old is not gonna do the character any favors

ATJ should be Bond for me, with Henry Cavill or Idris Elba as either 008 or 009 serving as a mentor to 007. For laughs he could be introduced returning the gadgets to Q branch.

Throughout this episode the same words kept coming up that made me feel that the perfect choice for Bond would be Colin Ferrell. He's not polished, he has that rough...tortured quality. He has gravitas and he would also bring an interesting dynamic to Bond in the same way Daniel Craig did.
My wife and I were watching a movie called Love in the Villa Starring Tom Hopper and I said he would make a great Bond and she said she was thinking the same thing.

Unpopular opinion but i think Peter Serafinowicz who plays The Sommelier in John Wick 2 would have been a perfect James Bond but i suppose his popularity or age might have been factor.
Really tough from today's actors. My picks are Matthew Goode, Adrian Turner, Theo James, Ben Aldridge and Nicholas Hoult.
Majority of these picks would make for great modern day Bond Villains…

One guy who just screams “James Bond” to me is Charlie Hunnam. Maybe he’s too attached to Sons of Anarchy still, but I could imagine him being fantastic in action scenes and definitely has a rougher look and gravitas to him.

Any actor they happen to chose as the next Bond, provided of course he exudes the proper image, will be a succesful 007,
one example is George Lazenby, many say he was a wooden actor but his lone 007 movie is one of the memorable movie.
And Lazenby exuded the right air. Another example, Daniel Craig, when he was introduced as the new 007, I was skeptical
because he did not have the Connery air around him, But Casino Royale is one of the best 007 movie. What I mean to say is,
that a good plot and a good director will save the film. On Her Majesty's Secret Service had a very good plot and was directed
very well. Same with Casino Royale, it had a very good plot and was directed very well. I'm sure they'll have both for 007 26.

If they wanted a Bond of Color Idris Elba would have been phenomenal. I think he would have been way better than Daniel Craig, but I agree he is now too old for the part, which is a shame.
From this specific list the only two potentials I think are Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor Johnson.
Somebody who I think was a missed opportunity is James Purefoy. If anyone is not familiar with who is is, he was in the TV series Rome where he played Mac Anthony, as well as the TV series The Following where he played the serial killer/cult leader Joe Caroll, and has featured in the Netflix series Sex Education as the father of one of it's lead characters Otis. At 59, that ship will have now clearly sailed, but he has the charisma and presence that would have made him an amazing Bond.

You have a lot of great choices on your list. That being said, my top three picks, in no particular order, are Dev Patel, Henry Golding, and Dan Stevens. All three of them possess the qualities that make for a great Bond actor. It's not just their impressive acting skills but also the intensity in their eyes that can captivate audiences. I'd also like to mention a wildcard choice I'm a fan of, and that is Mark Rowley.

For me, Nicholas Hoult would be a great choice for Bond. Ever since I seen him as the hitman in ‘Those who wish me dead’. He just oozed a dangerous Bond. And he’s early 30’s as well.
Not enough people mentioning Jack O’Connell. An amazing actor and can do gritty and dangerous as well as likeable.

It's got to be Henry Cavill or Aidan Turner (strangely left off this list). We need to bring the fun factor back after a long, dour era of uber-seriousness. Miss the tongue-in-cheek charm of the Moore era. But we also need someone who will revel in being a James Bond ambassador...which Cavill would happily do

I think Nolan could be a shoe in for this, so Tom Hardy is one of his actors, would work. I would like to see a period piece, like Tarantino wanted to do, maybe have each movie different bond, in different eras, by insane directors.
EON doesn't want a period piece, unfortunately. They want a woke Bond to appease "modern audiences," most of whom were never Bond fans to begin with. Because Nolan wants to set Bond in the past, he is, I believe, unlikely to get the gig unless he compromises on that point with the producers. @@Lord_englishgent

For your consideration. Jamie Dornan. Yes, he's Irish, but so is Pierce Brosnan. Dornan checks all the boxes IMO.
Technically Brosnan was, but he lived in London from the age of years old. He still lives in a townhouse there.

I will be happy with any Bond other than black, brown or Lady Bond.
Maybe it's time to try switching Bond actors between every movie. The longevity of a Bond actor will become irrelevant. It might also be easier and less risky to try "left-field" actors.
I think Taron Egerton might be the next one he played very well in Black Bird or Robert Pattinson.

Henry Cavill if producers want another Pierce Brosnan 007 style 'era. Taron Egerton if you want a more raw, emotional 007 like Dalton with a sprinkle of Roger Moore wit.
Taron could be a great Bond, but again if Henry plays his cards right he's got the biggest chance.

Aaron Taylor Johnson is super wooden and would have half the charisma of Daniel Craig. Richard Madden is way too short. Riz Ahmed would be a great pick but I feel like the role would take on a different context. Same with Rege-Jean Page is good but he’s going to be the new Simon Templar and I think he’d be much more fun in that sort of role.

Idris Elba would be my favorite choice, just watch him in Luther, but at this point he is too old. Though I think him being in a James Bond movie as perhaps an antagonistic partner or even a bad guy would be interesting.

Absolutely agree on Dan Steven’s. Top 3 in my opinion. But I have a feeling that this time around they are going to cast a virtual unknown. And possibly a woman, but I doubt it.
