SKUNK PIGS! Traditional Bowhunting Javelina
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 фев 2023
- This week we're back down in the south Texas brush country bowhunting javelina along the US/Mexico border. Javelina are interesting little critters that look similar to wild hogs but are actually a completely different genus. They have a scent gland on their back and smell a bit rank which earns them the name skunk pig. Because of that smell, most folks think they're wild game not fit to eat but I'm out to prove that wrong in this catch clean cook bowhunting vid. My buddy Damon is hunting with his Bear recurve bow and I'm hunting with a fire hardened hickory longbow I made in a bow building video a while back. We'll be hunting by spot and stalk through the prickly pear flats of the desert.
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!

Anyone that says javalina has an off taste. Had a javi that wasn't properly field dressed. The key is two knifes... one for skinning, the other for breaking them down. The key in cooking them, is low and slow. Your video showed how it's supposed to be done, start to finish!
only criter i use gloves on, one of my favorite game meats just gota keep that nasty crap on the hide off the meat 💯
You answered the only 2 questions I had about Javelina, the difference between Javelina and Wild Boar, then how to prepare the animal.
Heck yeah, you’re in my state, welcome to Texas Clay! If you like hogs and javelinas you’re in the right place. Hogs are rampant, most of my deer hunts turn into hog hunts, but that’s fine with me. I was just thinking to myself that you’re in a good arrowhead area just when y’all found one. When I’m at my lease, I always keep one eye on the ground just for that reason. Looks like you guys had a good time. Congrats on the hunt bud!!
Awesome thank you!
Clay Hayes* Bravo well done, thank-you gentlemen for taking the time to bring us along. GOD Bless.
@text-7681 SCAMMER ALERT
Great hunt! I've had the same experience with wild boar my whole life as far as reading and hearing that they are unedible. Most hunters can hunt, but few hunters can truly cook.
Well said!
I have had the same about Antelope in South Dakota, but then there it is people cooking it like they had deer as the first mistake as it needs a bit slower and lower cooking then Deer.
I do not like Antelope for the taste of the meat even when cooked right as the meat has so little fat there is no flavor, it is like eating a bunch of Deer that has a cardboard taste to it sure it might be like deer in the texture when cooked right but taste is not there for me.
That Lost Arrow Ranch hat! Great show you did with Scott, flip and your son! Crippen is a great dude.
I love how clay brings multiple bows to a hunt. One second he has an osage selfbow and another second he switches back to his favorite hickory fire hardend selfbow
I gave the Osage bow to our host 😉
And again the fire hardened hickory bow fulfilled it’s duty.
Congratulations to this successful hunt.
Guys, this was awesome! Spot 'n stalk is always a challenge, no matter what you're hunting for. With long-bows?! Outstanding!
Many thanks
Great hunt guys! Where I hunt in SE Oklahoma near a decent sized CoE lake we have a big problem with the cactus as well. Unfortunately around here the cactus is growing underneath the grass so you think you are walking across a good prairie but it will put quills through your boots quickly. I’ve worn Danner snake boots for several years, the type that look like sneakers so that I can move around quickly. But even then sometimes I will get a sticker that will slowly work it’s way through the side or bottom of the boot.
Looks like a great hunt! Since I was watching you because of my ambition of becoming bowyer, and then watching Alone S8 you became my ideal of a man, great resilience and being a good husband and father! Regards.
This is def much more zen than any hog hunt I’ve been on.
That looks like a fun hunt. Taking care of game from time it hits the ground to butchering and cooking is the key to good meals. IMO. Thanks for sharing.
My first hunt with a trad bow was for javelina this year. I had a great time. I got into them 3 times and had one shot opportunity. Thought he was 30 and he ended up being 25 and my arrow grazed his back hairs but luckily didn’t hit him. So close! Dang those tacos look amazing! I will definitely be trying for them again next year! Thanks Clay.
They’re fun
Great shot and awesome cooking, I lived in Arizona for many years and was around havi quiet a lot! Keep up the great work!
would be super cool to have a quick rundown on the bows/gear you guys care to share about. Always cool to see the bows in different environments!
Great hunt and good times ! Thanks 👌
Just got in this morning from AZ with my first javie & saw this video. Fun hunt!
FABULOUS, start to finish. Of course, now I want to go to Texas and both hunt and eat javelina! Thanks, Clay (Chris, in Maine)
Go for it!
I hunted the Callahan ranch for hogs and javelin with traditional bow in '99 and 2000 . We took several hogs and javelina along with a cooler full of rabbits , rattlesnakes were EVERYWHERE! Awesome hunting for spot and stalk .
Great hunt! Can't wait for the next Texas adventure!
in addition to being an excellent hunter, he has the best arrow bows. bro I want an ok Jesus Christ bless you hugs from Amazonas Brazil
Awesome video as usual definitely on my bucket lists thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
I really like that you show the misses. It makes me feel better that highly experienced archers like yourselves miss too. I missed my big shot about 2 years ago but I guess that happens. :-) ha
Yes sir 👍🏻
Doing it right . That's the way we used to do it, make carnitas with Hatch chili 😋
It's all in preparation like smoked carp .
It's usually in people's head on how it tastes if cooked properly.
Awesome video
Correct preparation and seasoning is the trick and with any game cleaning them quick and cooling them down properly 👍✌🏻
Right on
That was a difficult shot, bro!! Nice adaptive form under the hunting conditions!!! Bloody lovely!!!
👊
Great hunt and awesome looking tacos. Finding that arrowhead was definitely something special especially doing exactly what the former owner would have been doing.
Nate
Thanks 👍
Thanks for sharing your videos, just bought your book "Surviving Alone". Cant wait to read it!
Hope you enjoy it!
Very nice. Thank you for sharing another adventure.
The best video you have done from field to table perfect example of being self sufficient the beard makes perfect camouflage 😂
Was with you when you had like 20k subs. Saw the alone victory and bam look at you! Congrats, man! Oh an wow thats a beard lol
Great shot ,heck yeah buddy!👍🏹🎯🦛🐖
A friend and I was playing around with trad bows in south Texas. He used one of those call and we had 15 come running at us. They are fun critters to hunt. I love hunting South Texas its like a second home.
Nice
Awesome video Thanks Clay!!!
That havalina look terrific. And you made tacos. 😋 yum
thanks Clay! impressive video!👍
Great video. Thanks for sharing.🇬🇧
Another great adventure… thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
Clay, if you search your memory way back to the Florida PBS Banquet at your talk, I gave you and several other bowhunters samples of my Javelina jerky! Good stuff!
Always a pleasure watching your videos with extreme envy due to not being able to hunt with a bow here in the UK. Keep up the good work and best wishes to you and the family.
Thanks, will do!
did you just say you can't hunt in the UK with a bow? WTH why not 🤣 what kind of mad law is that
The UK government have deemed it unethical to kill with a bow but an over privileged prep boy with a poor place shot from a rifle is sufficient. We can only use a bow on the grounds of an archery club. If caught carrying a bow on public land or private is classed as trespass with offensive weapon. We can't even carry a lock knife 😂
lawd TF I don’t live anywhere outside the US, does the UK not remember where we came from? Pre-gunpowder? Pre-gun society? Smh how so limiting
Great video, excellent hunter ! I really enjoyed watching .
Glad you enjoyed it
Man, I'd pay good money for the end product! Those looked soooooo good.
🤤
Haven’t even got half way and that hunt looks epic
Great edits and video production!
awesome video clay!
video muito bom ,excelente conteudo ,simples e facil de de entender ,parabens
Those little suckers are shifty. Awesome hunt 👍🏼
Damn that shot just about knocked that javelina off its feet! nice shot Clay
Thank ya
I come from Indonesia, I am 20 years old. I really like adventure, even though I have never felt adventurous HOURS.....👍🏿
Great production
Another enjoyable time. Killing me with the tacos. 👍
🤤 🌮
Great hunt!👍😀
Archery hunting javalina is one of my favorite species to hunt. They are fun. I like to make chorizo with the meat.
Traditional bows are much more difficult than modern bows saluuuuut
Just reading your book (Surviving Alone ) and now your video top Best regards Frank
Enjoy!
I think I would have snake 🐍 boots on in that environment for sure ,great video.
Hola Clay buena caza esos tacos se ven muy ricos saludos
Love watching eating off the land. 😋
It's very interesting what you said about not having the outside of the hide touch the meat. My dad and I run a hunting business in South Africa and we hunt a lot of waterbuck, which a great many people will tell you is inedible. But the concept is the same. Waterbuck true to their name spend a lot of time in and around water and therefore produce an oil that sort of waterproofs their hide. Well, when skinning it's important not to get that oil on the meat. And if done correctly waterbuck is one of the best game meats in Africa.
Love the videos btw
Great shot on the skunk piggy!
Love your anchor, looks like multiple reference points. You showed it a few times. Are you doing something new there?
It looks like something I would love to try, but it’s so painful to try something new and adapt to it. Lol
Thanks again for sharing again
Great hunting
Love your hunting adventures just wish I could pay ya to make me a recurve bow but I know you most likely don't have time with all your adventures but would be cool I will just have to watch your bow making videos again keep the videos coming. 😊
Don't know if he still does his bow building classes, but If he does, you could pay to have him teach/walk you through building your own self bow. It's extremely rewarding. More rewarding than just buying a bow someone else made.
My dad use to hunt them back on the day on his ranch in Cuba. He has many fond memories cooking them up
😎
Thanks for the video as always clay. hope all is good!
You bet

@@clayhayeshunter Hey dude, I think somebody may be spamming/hacking you or some shit. Looks like someone with a weird "@..." is replying to all these comments. Have you seen that?
Awesome adventure and great humore! Looks like you are hunting with the firehardened hickory bow? How is it performing after some time has past compared to osage and other "normal" hickory bows you made?
Awesome video man. Congrats on that javelina. How’s that fire hardened hickory bow doing? I watched your comparison video you did between the Osage and fire hardened hickory. So I’m just curious.
That is some good stalking. I 've been in in that situation with coyotes where they are looking right (at 10 yards) at you but you can't move an inch to get a shot. WHew its intense.
"10,000 years ago, there was somebody out here, doing exactly the same thing we are." "Missing javelina." "And losing arrows." 😄😄
Pretty much 😜
Javalina are protected species in the state of new mexico, ive always wondered what they taste like.
ZZ Top beard going 😂
Great video Clay ✔️
😁
EXCELLENT VIDEO! That old arrowhead gave me an idea... would be super interesting mounting an ancient arrowhead on a hand-crafted arrow and using your homemade bow for a primitive catch and cook. Maybe show us how the arrow is made, fire-hardened, and the stone point secured on the shaft. Not even sure a primitive catch and cook like this exists on the web so might be a first!
Jason, that would not be a good idea, stone points must be extremely sharp in order to make a clean and ethical wound on a animal. To make an artifact stone point into a hunting point again, you would need to sharpen it, destroing it. What can you do, in fact it is something that Ryan Gill does it perfectly, is make new stone points to hunt. watch Ryan´s videos and get a feel for it, his channel is huntprimitive here on RUclips.
@@lucasbuassali4686 I couldn't see the arrowhead well enough to know it was dull, and not sure unused sharpened edges deteriorate over time. A steel edge would likely lose sharpness over millennia, but not sure about stone. Regardless, Clay made his bow from scratch so it would be interesting seeing him make an arrow and use a fresh arrowhead for a primitive hunt--probably fetch a lot of views on this hunting channel. Thanks for recommending that channel and the content looks intriguing--I did subscribe!
I guess the edge deteriorates over time, just like normal rocks, even most when considering the very fine edge necessary for a good sharp point. Of course that depending on the enviroment it will happen at a different rate. I agree with you that would be a nice video, although i believe it would raise some ethical questions as well, since ancient stone points its considered archeological artifacts. Anyway, i hope you enjoy Ryan's content, as much as i do, he and Clay even had some hunts together down in Florida. Cheers!
@@lucasbuassali4686 I was watching Ryan knap this morning and was VERY impressed. Now that is some serious skill! Amazing how serrated and sharp he got the edges, and even more impressive aboriginals have fashioned points like his for over 50,000 years. I'll drop a question to him on how long unused arrowheads stay sharp... some of those ancient Clovis points still look mint after thousands of years so will be interesting to hear what he says. Thanks again for recommending the channel!
Its really impressive, beatiful skill indeed, i tried some myself, unfortunaly here in my region in Brazil there isn't much knappable stone to work with. I would love to see Ryan's opnion on this, as i am saying it from common sense instead of personal experience, and so, i might be wrong!
Muito boa caçada caçar com arco é uma adrenalina diferenciada ! Aqui no Brasil 🇧🇷 tem muito desse porco aqui chamamos de cateto
Thanks
That's a proper mountain man beard 🤣
Got em!!
I make tobacco pipes for a hobby and use antler as accent pieces. Using some javalina fangs would be awesome
Cool idea!
Awesome video. Just curious, what make of chest holster is that? Thank you.
Arrowhead find ..... Yeh and imagine hunting bare foot there ha Ohh, Ouch, missed again ha
Well done. It is amazing how much wildlife thrives in that desolate-looking place. In dry years, you'd think nothing could survive, but somehow it does.
I'm curious about the bow you hunted with. It doesn't look like the one you made a few videos back.
@text-7681 SCAMMER ALERT
Absolutely
Ajiaco stew. Yucatán style javelina. Pretty tasty. Especially with the plantains.
Sounds great!
Thanks for the video Clay. Just realised that I’ve been pronouncing the name Javelina incorrectly. Always used a hard ‘J’. Oh, how I laughed! 🤦🏻♂️🤣👍🏻 Hilariously funny and true story. 😬
That’s Jilarious
Perfect!
🤣
Damn you Mike Mike! I should have used that! 👍🏻🤣🤣
Mr Clay, maybe a dumb question but I'm assuming javalinas have a great sense of smell just like a hog?? Great video as always brother 💪💪🤘🤘🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Kinda crazy how different they are from the ones we had in Africa Arizona. They would chase you down if weren't careful.
Good work, men! Loving the camerawork! 😊👍
Thanks a ton!
Which tube do you use for your arrows? Carbon or wood? Do you have a video on how to make arrows?
Wood. I’ve got a couple arrow making videos on the channel
That looks like great meat, don't look dark and lean like usual lean game!
Carne muito boa aprovado kk
What is the draw weight that is needed to hunt those big boiiz? Cool video, thanks!
Cuando se casa un zaino por lo general se le corta esa parte que párese la rabadilla de la gallina para que la carne no tenga mal sabor. Aquí en Panamá se le conoce como saino
Shiiiiiiet didnt realise you were a damn chef look at those!
Sometime soon the super hogs, these wild hogs from Canada bread for the cold they might be making there way into the Dakota's soon and of they get to South Dakota I am definitely going to try to hunt them with my bow in the right areas.
@clayhayeshunter which pack are you using in this video
Viva Arbusto Gris!!!
I am very sensitive to some of the aftertaste that wild game can have. I found javilina to have an aftertaste just like what they smell like. Also the vitals on these little guys is further forward of where you would think. What looks like a good lung shot is actually stomach/ guts. They absolutely smell terrible if shot there. The one I shot was quartered cleaned and put on ice asap so the taste had nothing to do with how we took care of it. I find the same thing with big rutting mule deer, I skin quarter and clean them as fast as possible but no matter what they have a bit of an aftertaste, kind of like goat or muttton. I can eat it but I prefer to shoot them earlier in the year. That testosterone has an effect for sure.
And yes, we used two knives and did our best to not contaminate the meat with oils from the hide. Still could taste the "skunk in it" not terrible, but I am not rushing to shoot another!
What type of knifes do you use to skinned the Javalina?
quick question can you put a release aid on a hand build bow?
Sure
You guys are almost like the kalahari bushmen. Well almost, kinda
🤣
We marinated in pineapple juice and made kabobs with some.
Where in South Texas? I'm in the RGV. Been following you for years
Ground hog might be similar , you gotta get the glands under the arms or it will be bad . I think for old guys like me pigs are way easier. Did you see any Sabe ?
how many pounds is your bow? Nice hunting
fun to hunt with handguns to
Clay what kifaru pack are you using ??is that a striker ?
Yep, it’s the StrykerXL
