Traditional Bow Hunting Elk 2021 - Spot and Stalk Recurve Bow!

  • For the Hayes Family, September is all about traditional bow hunting elk! We recently got back from our 2021 elk camp and I was fortunate enough to connect with a good one, spot and stalk with the recurve bow hunting public land (not really a recurve but it looks better for the search engines!) This time last year I was preparing for Alone Season 8 and what would turn out to be two and a half months alone in the Canadian wilderness. We were all looking forward to this years elk hunt so we packed enough supplies for a month. But as it turns out I was able to arrow a big cow elk on only the second day. We're all thankful to have a freezer full of free range organic wild game meat but a little bummed that the archery elk hunting season ended so soon for us. But not to fret, there's plenty more hunting and other outdoor adventures to come yet this fall and winter so stay tuned!
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

I love to see your reverence & appreciation for the animal. It’s something that’s becoming lost on hunters today in the age of social media. It’s all about the kill and not about the purpose. The range of emotions through a hunt fluctuate so much, the excitement of the hunt & closing the distance, the anxiety when the hunt comes down to the wire, the excitement of an ethical, clean kill & then getting choked up with every kill because at the end of the day, you’re taking a life. A deep appreciation for these animals & the process of doing what we were designed to do is the only way & reason to do it. Love what you do & what you represent.

Exactly, i even cried at first hunt, my first hunt was a small fox , shot with my horse bow from 20 meters, i cried and pondering and say apologize to the dead fox even thou he's not aware of it anymore, i love when see you respect the animal after respectful clean shot, i kinda annoyed when people just shoot animal without purpose and treat it's dead body really bad, and they started terrorizing people with their bow now, even thou they shot pretty much awful and cocky, weapon and terrorism it's a big problem at my place, the main visible character from 'em so you can spot 'em as a terrorist was : shoot pretty awful, pretty dumb stupid and egoistic barbaric worst character especially when they hunt, it's really bad,....even they treat people like an animal,.... that's really good to see respectful hunt in this video...

The best part of this hunt, and the part I respect you most for Clay, is seeing you show genuine respect for the animal that gave its life, to sustain yours and family. Also that you can do this as a family and that your showing this gratitude to your boys. From another stickbowboy !

Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older. But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

Clay, congratulations on a great stalk! I have been on many similar ones, usually not ending with the hoped-for outcome. I agree with you, still hunting is my favorite way to hunt as I think it is the fairest to the animal AND allows me to learn the area. As with you, I treat the moment with reverence as these magnificent animals give their lives for our sustenance. Seeing hunters whoop and holler and high-five and dance around after they harvest an animal I think is disrespectful and uncalled for. Anyway, I love your videos. Thanks for sharing and please keep doing so.

So much goes into this kill - the making of the bow, the practice with the bow, the steadying of the nerves when taking the kill shot, the stalking, the wind, terrain, tracking... and a bit of luck! Truly incredible. To finally take down a beast of that size... it's something quite spiritual.

Nicely done. Great filming. It is obvious you spend a lot of time editing to get the story right. Brought back great memories of my youth. I started young scouting with Dad, and it was quite an event when I graduated from being too young to go to being his partner. Bow or rifle, Dad taught me to spot/stalk and still hunt, he never had the patience to sit. Life took me on a path away from Montana and that lifestyle but your videos bring it all back, thank you. Love seeing what you are doing with the boys. Getting the whole family to pack it out is next level!

I’m hunting for the first time this year, and with little guidance outside of the internet, it’s been a bit of throw everything against the wall and see what sticks. Learning a bunch about wind and a ton of respect for the animals and their abilities. I’ve tried still hunting and am learning patience, lots of patience. I first found your videos years ago when I was learning to make stickbows and I find a lot of inspiration from you. Thanks for all you do and keep it up. Congrats on everything that's happened in your life. Great job on that beautiful cow. No trouble with THAT bloodtrail. The most meaningful thing I took from this video though was the involvement of your family. Actually brought a tear to my eye. After 40 plus years of bowhunting whitetails (and one horseback elk hunt) the last 20 with a 52 lb. longbow my dad made in his garage, unfortunately, back problems have forced me to consider a crossbow. Not a move I ever thought I could bring myself to make but such is life. Thanks for showing the world the right way to approach hunting.

Alas, my still hunting days are over. too crippled up to even walk in the woods much less be quiet about it. still need to do some fine tuning on my Osage self bow that I made. mainly on the grip for a more consistent grip. I made three of them, one a bendy bow and love them all. There is nothing quite like taking game with a bow that you made from a tree. I do need to cover it with snake, just for camo effect. you have two very lucky boys, experiences and memories that can never be known by anyone else. Enjoy them and your life while you can.
