We sang this song at our Friday school assembly every Friday when I was a little girl. We sang patriotic songs. We sang the national anthem and we pledge our allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

I remember in the sixties going to school and sing this, we were so proud back then to sing about our country. Dixie, Shenandoah, war songs etc. I really feel sorry for our kids today. I was glad to see you guys about 8 or 9 years ago with the Kingston Trio. Glenn Yarbough was the MC. It was a great night.
Yes we feel sorry for the school children who are deprived of good music. The trail of chaos in the schools leads back to the politicians, and good people in education who are gagged by the high salaries- delivering mediocrity instead of inspiring traditional music.

Why sing the sanitized version? Where are the verses that made this a protest song? What about the "welfare office" references, etc?? Your approach to this song is a blasphemy to the memory of its author (Woody Guthrie) and his successors (Pete Seeger). What a disgrace!!!
