      not sure if I'd call a lot of this stuff revolutionary. It's just developers don't go into this depth because it costs to much money.
      Flowing hair, already done. Flowing Clothing, already done. Destructible environment, already done. Meshing Servers, Already done.

      @@MrAcorn911 technically procedual planets have been done way before star citizen has done them, volumetric clouds, etc. it's the way it all comes together, in a massive scale MMO that makes it mind bending. The hair for example, I have yet to see hair as customizable as shown here, while looking just as good :D Just my two cents tho

    The outfits look amazing and detailed. The equipable storage is a great idea. The star of the show has to be the character customiser though. I've never seen one as good especially with that hair. Saving them for patches is the cherry on top. Great work folk GIB

    I told everyone 11 years ago. "I'll wait 20 years for a space MMO if it is done right." Glad to see we're on pace. Incredible work on the game guys this is looking absolutely fantastic

      tbh the hygiene already sounds like a horrible gameplay mechanic players will end up dreading 1, 2, 5 months down the line.

      ​@@MrAcorn911 What's so horrible about your character, clothes etc getting dirty?
      You kill someone at close range or get shot yourself you expect blood to smear on your clothing and it to stay until washed off. Seeing the armour you bought and have kept for months slowly become worn as the paint scrapes away here and there or a bullet hole in your chest piece that it luckily stopped from a firefight you had the other day. Or the dust and sand from the sandstorm on Daymar that gathered sand and dust in all the crevices of your suit. Other players will be able to tell that you had just recently been on a dusty planet.
      Your clothing can tell a story just as your ship or car can. The scrapes and dirt give character and you can grow attached to that old set of armour that was once shiny and pristine, perhaps you want it to be shiny again so you purchase some items that you can somewhat regain that pristine and shiny look that it had originally.
      There is a subset of gamers that love these small details, whether it be bullet shells remaining on the ground after a battle for an hour or more like Fallout 3 and 4's bullet shell mods and 4's bullet hole mod that makes bullet holes in walls stay for a long time. So when you happen upon a firefight that took place maybe an hour or two ago you can see what happened not just from the bodies left behind but the bullet shells on the ground, the blood smears, pools and drips and bullet impacts which paints a picture of the firefight.
      The casual gamer doesn't care about these things but Star Citizen is not a casual game and therefore does not cater to the casual gamer.
      If it did then there would be no sitting in seat animations that take several seconds. There would be no drinking and eating, there would be no cold and heat weather mechanics because casual gamers do not care about these things. All the casual gamer cares about is killing as many players or NPCs in as short a timeframe as possible and that is why games like Call of Duty and Battlefield are or were the haven of casual gamer.
      Those games were made to satisfy the casual gamer and is why they can be pumped out on an annual to bi-annual basis whereas Star Citizen is taking two decades which is bearing fruit and speaks for itself. Star Citizen is a game that will be played for multiple decades if not longer.
      The same cannot be said for the typical casual game.

    That proper clothing interaction is crazy, we always see so much clipping with clothes/weapons/equipment. Having proper interactions really changes/improves the look.

    YES, I can finally have cornrows or hair that looks like mine. I’ve been wanting this forever. I am so glad they’re doing this cause I feel like a lot of video games just don’t do black hairstyles which I can understand but I don’t want to have a black character with straight hair lol.

    I'm looking forward to their future work on what they are calling diverse hairstyles. Hopefully they will add many more hairstyles with curly/kinky hair textures so that they won't be left as an afterthought. I'm sure they will be able to make them look good and authentic once they make time to work on them given their attention to detail on everything else that they've shown so far, which has been excellent.

    Star Citizen is the 1st game where every player across the planet will be in one, singular, unified, instance. It has the most sophisticated back-end for any game ever, that's why it's taking so long and so much finance. No game has ever spent so much resource on the invisible back-end relative to the visible front-end.

      ​@@simulacraethis is true however the scale of assets and environments is much larger than in eve. In eve everything is much more zoomed out, and much more of the interaction is via disconnected UI elements. The object interaction necessitated by star citizens diabetic ui systems mean that every UI object in eve, would require an entire fleshed out environment within star citizen (refinement, trade, shops, etc).
      As a 1600 hour eve online noob, the scale of this game is unimaginably larger in its development scale.

      Making replication layer work with acceptable performance over multiple regions is the dream but I'm pretty sure it's not doable simply because of pure signal speed lag due to distances. Though a friend of mine joked that if humanity ever figures out FTL communication it will be because of SC :D edit: "acceptable performance" is of course subjective . EVE has the "time dilation" etc for very good reasons and SC can't do that

    This was my favorite bit of the whole CitCon. Customizing my character is the most important part to me in a game. And needless to write that this not only looked good but makes me so happy that we’re getting some fruits of the new tech in Q4!

    They could go crazy with the Hygiene mechanic. You could affect the players face and eyes to show symptoms from radiation, poison, disease and injury, helping to really expand medical gameplay.

      But is it fun? I wasn't too happy about the showering announcement. Hopefully they can make things like cleaning and eating optional. I don't have time for that.

      @@corgan0 it all depends on how often you need to do these things. I feel like eating and drinking is a little to much now, would like to see 50% increase in the time it requires you to eat or drink. If I have to shower every 2-3 play sessions I won't care. Changes the gameplay enough that it helps remove some of the repetitive feeling of the game. Having a detour to the shower isn't a bad thing.

Like there's other things they have showed so far this citizencon that i've gone "this is so extra and not really needed. Its cool, but could careless if it was in game"

    Starcloth is really cool! I've seen z-buffering (or tunneling) where meshes and actors collide and pass through each other, and what starcloth has achieved is a demonstration of simulation complexity games have embraced and solved. Amazing! (video game design student and avid gamer for the past thirty years.) GREAT to see this achievement, truly cinematic!

    This game is soo incredibly ambitious with all its tech and its pure scale, it honestly makes me happy to see devs go above and beyond to create something truly extraordinary. On a side note, I'm sure it's pure coincidence, but Rough and Ready's Tattoos just remind me of Belter tattoos from the Expanse and the music at 40:30 just remind me of the soundtrack. XD

      I've heard this music before awhile ago. It's called trailer music and I've been trying to figure out who did it. I used to play this song all the time awhile ago. Wish they gave credit to the composer for this so we can listen to it ourselves.

    I remember when customizable pouches came to Dayz in the form of a mod. It was a 'wow why didn't the devs do it earlier' realization. Now CIG are in the position to learn all the lessons of previous projects to scrape the cream off the top and use it to make the most ambitious project even better. This is closest to 'ready player 1' universe we will get. Especially if CIG leases the tech behind StarCitizen to other IPs. For example 'starwars'

    Love the new character creator features. Glad to see more hair styles, but especially the wider color ranges. I would love to get red eyes, I know they're currently realistic shades, but perhaps in the future we can even get more crazy with those as well.

    Something I want to highlight that others haven't is the MUSIC.
    The early soundtrack felt a little empty, even if it was good it felt like it hadn't found its identity yet. The newer ones that have been coming out over the past few years, especially the newest stuff from SQ42 and these demos, definitely gives me movie sci-fi vibes.
    Alien, Moon, Blade Runner, I'm getting vibes of all the classics in these tracks, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
    I'm really feeling the vibes of the 'Verse that Chris Roberts envisioned, that this is an expansive but very grounded universe that feels gritty and real.

    49:36 i'm way too excited for this than is considered normal, especially for the new editor. Also the fact that clothes can have pouches now.

      I got to talk to one of the guys behind that. He's saying they're working towards more customization away from the current rigidity (think armor and undersuits being separate). The pouches are example of this, but if you see the Rough and Ready gangers in Pyro, you'll find several wearing armor over clothes/nothing at all.

      @@Dewderonomy Yeah, I would think that "clothes" could be an undersuit layer as well, and I have an idea that they could also further divide it, that you could wear a pouch belt over normal clothing, or something like that, but then you can't wear armor on top of that of course... only on clean clothing that has no pouches.

    Looks awesome. I do like how the OG character creation had my actual eye color, the one that is mostly green with a light brown ring around the pupil - central heterochromia, and I didn't see it there anymore in the sample, though he did go fast. But if the new system has more colors over all, I'm cool with it.

    This is so good. You guys need to add optuon to have a translucent image holder in front of the character creator. So we can put our own image in that and ajust facial features accordingly.

      Typically the tech I’ve seen that translates someone’s face into a game has never worked well and creates too many issues, inaccuracies and low detail models. Making it unlikely such would be added.

      @@jasonmack760 technically possible if we had a hardware device like apples Face ID Technology, where we basically laser scan our own face geometry. But I wouldn't want my actual face to be scanned anyway, that seems like a great way to get your identity stolen haha

    I understand why they made the Starhair to always revert back to its original style but I think it would have been cool to make it part of hygiene. if you hair gets wind tossed or if you just wake up you have messy hair and have to take care of it. it would be cool if it grows too

      I like this idea. Especially if they have different hair-states. Like groomed and disheveled. For instance, if you wear a helmet your hair might look crazy until you brush, comb or pick it out.

    Considering all these I doubt that they wont eventually add VR it's like they're setting up the game for VR with everything i've heard so far from physics to this, like they gotta do it when everything is ready at least or it would seem like it's a waste cause alot of the basic framework seems to be already there and I can think of no way to better immerse myself in the game... besides it's pretty much becoming a metaverse and I know with the invisible instancing and server meshing it would be able to handle VR on this scale it would instantly become the largest scale VR game with realistic simulation and detail out there!

    I can't wait till the game is so big that you can go to any planet and there is an entire storyline on that planet, and you can live and play the story on that planet alone if you want.

    Thank god i can finally choose my "body type". This is going to be so immersive!
    Game devs really must be thankful, that they do not need to add different NPC dialogues, reactions and consequences, depending on your gender and origin, anymore. You know... things that made games IMMERSIVE and believable back then :)
    Things, that made Dragon Age Origins and Fallout 3/NV popular. Things, that people ASKED FOR in Rpgs, because that represented quality in Rpgs!
    But its good, that this is no longer tolerated. This kind of quality took lots of time. Time that now can be used to create MORE AWESOME SHIPS AND HAIRS! Give me more ships! I really need them in my life! Just take my money!

    I really hope the game encourages not using suits all the time as not having one on is purely a disadvantage. Like I should only put one on for combat and space exploration and that’s it.

    I hope we get some cyberpunk style customization options. I really like the 'excessively perfect skin with lines cut into it showing you it's at least partially synthetic'. Things that kinda make the faces pop out as being interesting. Human faces that are too realistic are kinda boring. I see plenty of those every day in real life.
    I also hope we see a use for clothes and other RP elements. Maybe keeping your character clean and dressing nicely gets your character better reputation with factions you deal directly with. Maybe different jobs have different hazards and wearing the appropriate clothing helps protect you from those things, rather than just slapping on a full body survival suit and calling it good.
    I really like the idea of going out mining with a headlamp and toolbelt. Doing that now though is a death sentence of course.

    i have been playing with a bald hair style, as the game is currently without any Afro hairstyle since forever. so watching the panel over the weekend go into why making Afro styled hair is difficult and to showcase that they are trying was very reassuring.
    the dread styles they showed were a decent start, but is it just me or are the dreads that they showed the type of dreads that people with straight hair can get? it has got me wondering if CIG's approach is skewed since C4 type hair is very curly and would require much less physics, unless it is styled in dreads or long braided hair, but even then, it would require less physics than the straight hair they showcased, as C4 hair when styled offers greater structural integrity.
    the short braided hair they showed seems to be pretty good, but again it's the type of braided hair a person with straight hair could get, but it is much more serviceable that the dreads, so it does not look like it would need much more to get it to a release state. idk if they are going to add Afros with less bounce, C4 type, that require little to no physics, and curlier Afros with more bounce, that would require some physics, but not as much as for straight hair.
    there are also a bunch of other hairstyles for C4 type hair, like a fade, twists, nappy, etc, that they could add to round out the options for those of us who would like that style of hair.
    i appreciate CIG's effort to incorporate these hairstyles, but i feel like they are doing them from the perspective of a straight person's hair trying to style them that way, unless they also want to have all types of people with the same hairstyles, but even then a person with straight hair will have dreads that looked very different than those of a person with C4 type hair. i hope that this is something that they can address soon, so we can see where they are heading with this. i hope it is just a case of CIG starting with straight hair, then adding curlier and curlier hair as they progress.

      I’m with you there. It’s a decent start but they definitely will need to do better in supporting a lot more hairstyles for other hair types.

      @@PerfectCode yeah, it makes me wonder if they have any people with C4 type hair on staff to know what it looks like or how it behaves, because from my limited knowledge C4 hair is much, MUCH easier to animate and sculpt compared to straight hair, especially when it has to interact with physics and gravity/zero-g.
      i really hope they are going with straight hair in all styles, because it has the most physics concerns, then going to curly hair all the way to C4 hair.

      @@Ub3rSk1llz LMFAO!! so i see reading and comprehension are things you struggle with, so let me help you out; C4 hair is the *EASIEST* hairstyle to make after a bald head because when it is styles it *DOES NOT MOVE* so you do not even need to worry about how it will interact with the physics engine (dependent on style of course), but even the most demanding C4 style hair, is *NOT* as demanding on physics as straight hair. so go ahead and take a seat.

      They did say they were just showcasing some of the most difficult to make when they showed the dreads and braids and there would be a lot more coming now that they have the tech worked out. They seem to be extremely invested in getting all hair types and styles represented IMO.

    The new character creator is amazing, but when it comes to PU we better get export/import (to *file*) functionality for the settings so every database reset on patch drop does not mean having to manually re-do the character.

      One of the CIG devs noted during CitCon that they DO have save/export and the sharing ability set up for the creator, but they didn't put that into the presentation. But it will have a way to store and load character details quickly. I was very concerned about this as well, but I was pleased to see that they have this on their to-do list.

    What they could do is, that every employee creates one character each work day (as seen, only takes a few minutes). The variety of people creating these will create so many different types of characters and with the sheer amount of people doing this they will have so many characters, that seeing the same npc character ingame over and over is sheer impossible. Just a thought :D

    I dont like the idea of armor sets based on looks and such unless they have a few. That means at some point all the lower end armors are obsolete. And i like light armor for the sense of recon and infiltrator. But id love to customize that armor

      @@canniballistic555 Actually I was referring to some woman faces I have seen in SC (commercial) videos over the years. I finally see a few good looking women faces in this video and that means there is potential to do nice female NPCs and characters.
      And about "inclusivity", this word has taken very strange meanings lately that I think it will take us to a dark road if we go deeper.
      But to tell it simple, I sure don't want to see women with beards because of..."inclusivity".

    I'm really happy they are giving a focus on diverse hairstyles. Just remember that not many African-centric hairstyles have straight hair. Usually it is nappy, dreaded, braided (my favorite), or some kind of curled. To get fancy we can also include weaves and many kinds of hairstyles via extensions. I know it's hard, but it would be wonderful if we saw more hair diversity than NBA 2k or NFL games.

      It was vaguely answered. The more poofy/expansive the hairstyle, the. more difficult it is to also make sure that hair can bend/compress properly to get into helmets and ball caps and other clothing accessories. So they're starting with what they think will be easier hairstyles with diverse appearances to get through the rest of that design/sculpting process. Then they can tackle the more difficult styles (like full afros) later.

    5:25 Instead of being able to place the pouch below the knees, wouldn't it be more practical to be able to place them on the outer side of the thighs? You know, like cargo pants have.
    21:02 - 24:40 The leather simulation looks way too fluid, it should behave more rigidly to look more believable.
    45:00 It's great to be able to give your character the hairstyle you want, but giving these dreadlocks to your character would render him/her almost impossible to wear a helmet, hat or any headwear for that matter.

    These look great, but a few of them look awful to imagine wearing. Like the example asset headpiece. The eyes don't look aligned with the weird inward facing tilt of those lighted sensors/cameras on the front. And you'd have insanely narrow vision from the inward tilt, maybe even feel inwardly crosseyed.
    The other thing was the trousers at 4:10, having that massive metal nozzle insert or whatever it is on the back of your leg would feel awful and distracting. With every step it'd swing back and forth into the back of your calf.
    It'd also be nice to see webbing added to the modular pouches rather than just floating there. With the starcloth in the other presentation, I wonder if that would be possible to have some kind of dynamically added webbing which hugs onto the clothing its added to.
    There's a danger with Rough and Ready gang suffering from bad visual design in terms of recognition. Nine tails is immediately discernable from the purple and their style. Rough and Ready may get confusing or frustrating from players if they aren't already aware of them being there, and even more frustrating if mixed in with civilians.

    Modular containers are key and needed. Hear us. We NEED to be able to NAME a container. Even if ONLY the player over sees that name.
    Example: Ammo bag. Basic MedKit. Hats/Gloves. 3DaysFood. (etc.)
