  • Don't need a scanner for this one! But the issue is not as obvious as it might seem.
    Let's get this faithful Craftsman lawn tractor running 100% again because the grass isn't going to stop growing anytime soon!
    Enjoy!

    Ivan, my MTD riding mower had the same symptoms , I had to replace the intake manifold, it was broken @ the carburetor mounting flange. After I replaced the intake manifold I also found the fuel line pinched on the hold down bracket next to the cylinder head, I replaced the fuel line, problem fixed. Nice video !!

  • @JLafix
    @JLafix 5 лет назад +1

    often times I get repairs come in that are close to what you first described, mowers that run fine for @20min then just quit...let cool down starts and runs fine @20 min. later it quits. In those cases its usually the fuel is vapor locked (like holding liquid in a straw by capping the end) the fuel cap has a tiny vent hole that gets glogged not allowing the fuel to flow, mostly in gravity fed type systems but I have seen it with fuel pump systems as well. good find on yours, that happens a lot with chain saw intakes.

    A buddy of mine was having similar issues with his mower. We checked and cleaned the carb. Replaced the fuel pump and inline filter (Did improve some)He still had to use the choke to keep it from leaning out. It ended up being a long piece of fuel line. We noticed it was getting wet while the engine was running and he had to have the choke partially on to keep it running. His was a honda twin cylinder GXV620. His fuel cut off solenoid appears to be sticking at times also so we plan to replace that in the near future also. I love tinkering with small engines. I rarely pass up the opportunity to troubleshoot them. Nice job fixing 👍 that intake leak. I think the silicone was a pretty good fix.

    Theres gotta be an OBD port on that thing somewhere....lol! Nice fix. Things like that are why alot of people throw out a perfectly good mower.

  • @SmittySmithsonite
    @SmittySmithsonite 5 лет назад +1

    Nice work, Ivan! I love working on these things. It's stress free for me - everything is usually straightforward and simple, like cars were 40+ years ago.👍 When I get into these, I'm confident I can fix it ... unlike modern cars. 😂
    Another issue that will cause the exact same symptoms is a plugged gas cap vent. When I saw the first minute of your vid, that's what
    I was expecting. It'll run long enough to put the fuel tank into a vacuum, then die of fuel starvation ... only to restart moments later as air creeps back in through the blockage! That'll get you scratching your head!
    I had a John Deere G110 with a Kohler Command 25 (CV730S) that this happened to. Was a tiny hole in the fuel cap for a vent. I mowed for a half hour, no problem - then it became ... mow 5 minutes, die, repeat. Took me a while to find that one, being super frustrated. As a last resort I grabbed my fuel can (figuring I'd top the tank off, thinking I had bad fuel), and as soon as I unscrewed the gas cap off the tank, I heard a "hiss". Bingo! I ran a drill bit through the hole a couple sizes larger after peeling out the rubber baffle, and it never happened again. Was dried up grass packed in the hole!
    Another issue I had on that tractor was blown head gaskets after just 160 hours! That was a common issue with this particular engine. I was one of the "lucky" ones that had this happen out of warranty, since I only mow 20 hours a year ( I have a couple acres, but I mow fast and infrequently - you can see lawn care isn't high on my list of fun things to do, lol). Mine burnt up a quart every mow when it got real bad - I'd be breathing oil smoke the whole time. Pretty aggravating. I had paid alot of money for that machine brand new, and I work on stuff 30 years older all the time with 400x the hours, and zero engine trouble. Just the way of the 21st Century ... 😡 I got rid of that one after 9 years of ownership, and bought a Husqvarna zero turn 5 years ago. Cut my mow time down by 25%, at least! 👍 Only 79 hours on the deck so far (no engine hour meter - only a clutch-activated hour meter).

    your better off with a water spray. that propane with the flywheel ya might as well pee into the wind. truthfully never seen intakes do that but it is possible. that has hydraulic lifters and are prone to pump up. thats why they only recommend 10w30 only. also you had the two wire coils which means it had a sam module (spark advance module) these were notorious for intermittent failure and since it only did it hot this could be a problem. kohler wants you to change both coils and dump the sam module (nla) if one goes bad. also the carb has a sollenoid on the fuel bowl. they go bad. thing is it only operates the high speed circuit so it will do exactly as described, start and idle but no high speed without the choke. thus why they say in the owners manual to shut it off with the throttle half way or higher. if ya dont youll get gas in the muffler that explodes. replaced many a muffler because of that. glad to see its runnning good but if it acts up those are some things to check.

      junk needle/seats on the gravity fed engines with tank up high are critical on fuel filter type.. solution install fuel shutoff valve or it will flood the engine, fill the exhaust, lock itself up etc...
      the above mentioned valves often stick closed and the thing wont run period... root cause good old ethanol and other detergents ;)

    At 7:03 you said you mowed 10 minutes, I assume with the fan shroud off. If you are going to test run the engine for long periods put the fan shroud on as it directs cooling air from the flywheel fan over the cooling fins on the cylinders. No fan shroud = possible overheat.

    When using RTV I leave the O-ring out.
    Got a tractor for free, had to adjust the carb for altitude, CO poisoning is a real hazard with these engines.
    Having been in the business many years , CO exposure is nasty stuff. I lost count of events involving CO, having a headache for days is worth avoiding. Any motor running rich is a huge source of CO, no computer, no fuel management equals CO.
    Make sure it's outdoors, if you need to deal with a carb, work outside.

    I have one of those metal bottles that u pressurize with shop air. I use gasoline to find vacuum leaks. Have been doing for twenty years. If your nervous don’t do it. It is also great for spilled oil on the floor and spraying gooky oily wet bolts and threads. For those Nervous Nellies. The propellant in all these spray things we use is usually something like iso butane. Carb spray, brake clean and W-D40 r all extremely flammable. To test and become accustomed to how it reacts to flame, when we have a nice little fire in the backyard, I spray into the fire and watch how it burns. Propane has never worked for me finding vacuum leaks. Put your scan tool on obd 2, short term fuel trim. Watch the numbers while giving a little toot. Works great. U didn’t hear it from me. In the old days, they used Freon as the propellant. When that stuff burns u get phosgene gas. In WW1 they called it mustard gas. Pretty tuff on the lungs.

    I had a similar problem, but my Craftsman 26 hp mower would die after 15 minutes of mowing. Turned out to be my gas cap wasn't venting (allowing air into the gas tank). just to add to the possible causes to look at, I once had a mower that had a similar problem, It ended up being caused by a faulty fuel on/reserve switch. The switch had a leak which caused the fuel pump to suck air and after a while the air pocket would build and make its way to the carb causing it to run lean and almost stall.

    Intake leaks will get you every time. A number of years ago I bought a nice-at-the-time concrete partner saw. Basically, these are two-stroke chainsaws with a diamond circular blade replacing the cutting chain. The price was absolutely a deal of deals. But, the seller's demo just seemed a bit off. Three minutes into the demo, it ran out of gas and he took forever to walk back to his shop (loads of ATVs and such in-process of repairs) to retrieve gas.
    Once home, I fired up the saw and attempted to cut sections out of the sidewalk needed for new downspout-to-curb runs. Once the engine got hot, it died. It wouldn't restart until cold again. I went through that thing with a mechanic's fine tooth comb a half dozen times. It's not like they're that complicated...
    Finally, after another head scratching session of problem determination, I noticed fuel in the chassis where fuel shouldn't be under the carb-to-intake boot. "There's your problem, lady!" A small boot tear sealed while cold. But, once warm, allowed air in to the combustion charge downstream of the carburetor.
    A buck or two for a parted out intake boot off eBay and the thing now runs like a scalded greyhound.
    The guy that sold it *knew* of the issue hence the long retrieval of the gas. Would have loved to drop him a line letting him know I found the problem and fixed it for a couple of bucks. Of course, I'd hold back it took me hours upon hours to find.
    Most of success is sheer tenacity.

  • @jdtractorman7445

    I have heard that the John Deere 318 tractors have an issue similar to this but it is from the intake being two separate halves. The rtv deteriorates and causes weird issues similar to this. I think that there are some other models that use the Onan engine that could have that problem as well. I have a 318 myself but have not seen the issue....yet.

    • @notajp
      @notajp 5 лет назад

      Yes, the Onan twins did have that issue. I had to reseal the intake on my Case 446 with the Onan BF engine, and also on the Onan P224 on my skidloader. I used Permatex Moto Seal, similar to Yamabond. Designed for case sealing.

    I'm having a similar issue with my 1980 John Deere 214 with a single cylinder Kohler engine.
    Only wants to run with full choke (at first, half-choke did the trick), and won't run with PTO engaged now.
    It's been a fantastic lawn tractor, but this had me scratching my head.
    I too, thought it might be an intake leak.
    Some people suggest a fuel pump, or gunk in the carburetor....Personally, I think it's much more likely to be a vacuum leak at the carburetor gasket.

    RTV sealant has got me out of trouble on many automotive applications,for example, I stopped the thermostat cover which had some pitting in it & it was allowing coolant to leak past the O ring on a 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine that's in my Holden Commodore, I applied a smear of silicone sealant onto the water pump gaskets to minimize the chance of them leaking as well.

      yeah the scotty kilmer way no need for a smoke machine but you can make yourself one out of a paint can and alligator clips big enough to fit on the battery terminals or posts.

    Spray a little soapy water around there and see if it bubbles to find the leaks.

    All those mowers that size (Sears, Husqvarna, John Deere, etc) are all made by MTD.

      Sears, Husqvarna, and Poulan are all AYP. Not MTD (Major Turd Design). AYP used to be Roper.

    Hello, I believe my John Deere is running on only one cylinder. It has less power now and wants to bod down or shut off when I get into some high or thick grass. The power this year is much less that last year. What happened? Is this something I can fix or should I buy a new tractor? I have almost all new parts on it. Selenoid, fuel filter, fuel pump, coils, all new wiring harness, new battery, new plugs, new PTO clutch, new mower deck belt and spindles.

    I've seen a lot of those with cracked plastic intakes, right at the seams. I suspect a vibration issue over time along w heat causes this. In your case, this was not the issue. Buy the new o rings for a long term fix!

      Even plastic upper Intake Plenums crack over time on vehicles and on a lawn tractor they are not made from the ABS Plastic probably now recycled plastic,🤣🤣so you definitely know it will crack a lot faster I know my 12 yo push mower has a ABS intake manifold on it but the mowers and tractors of today I dont really know i am sure they are ABS plastic but with recycled plastic too I guarantee this.

    Coincidence that the RTV fixed that imaginary intake leak. Could be fuel pump/pulse pressure issue also. Clean the vent in the gas cap with a micro drill bit.

    • @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
      @PineHollowAutoDiagnostics  5 лет назад

      Good thought, but the scientific proof is very convincing that the intake leak was not imaginary for 2 reasons:1) Fuel pumps and gas tank caps typically don't fix themselves.2) Tractor has run flawless for three mows after the RTV repair. Actually I just got done mowing haha

    What do you think the odds are this working long-term? I was always told that silicone-based products and gasoline don't go well together as the gasoline will break down the silicone product. Oil okay gasoline not. Now I don't know if newer products since I've been messing with this are different nowadays?

      yes taz there are different rtv's now for coolant, gas and oil and even for exhaust manifolds so go to your local parts store and check them out.

    • @tonytiger33
      @tonytiger33 4 года назад

      but there isnt any oil or fuel anywhere near the intake manifold the gray one is fine for sealing that area no type of liquid goes through that area now if it springs a fuel leak it may break down that gray rtv possibly.
