  • Hey look! It's that movie everybody hates from that director that everybody loves. It's Showgirls! Now several decades after its release, Showgirls has had many reappraisals over the years but not by these two dim witted slobs. Is Showgirls a misunderstood camp classic or a genuinely terrible movie? Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between. Enjoy the video before RUclips shadowbans it!!!

Right there in the office(only 2 other coworkers present, not a job that has customers in and out or anything like that) I belched out at him

Went to a screening of the film in France, presented by Verhoeven himself. He told us before the film that he was at the time feeling pretty low after his big crusade film was cancelled. He therefore wanted to make something quick and low budget to keep moving, and at the same time vent and unload his anger and frustrations, making things as vulgar as possible.
Watching the movie right after he told us all that made a ton of sense, and probably made it way better than just watching it without context, it was pretty great.

So by the end when she's leaving Vegas for LA, it's because Vegas has become another "place" she'll be wanted for a crime. So she has to try yet again to fly straight and turn over a new leaf. Problem is: Theatres can no longer afford them. That kind of labor cost wouldn't be worth it because most people don't go to the movies because it costs them too much and the home experience is cheaper. Money talks and BS walks. Not only that but: for most people who aren't theatre buffs and theatre buffs are a niche market anyway the home expetience is higher quality and more consistant. What theatres must do: Private 20 seater rooms with the highest grade flat screens where you can pause your movie. groups of friends and families can then have private rooms with a temp flat screen. maybe throw some arcade games and a ball pit in there for family rooms. etc etc. small theatres you can rent with surround sound and a buffet lay out

It has slight elements of being a political thriller but a lot of sex or sex-adjacent stuff. They're going into pre-production just now, God willing. I've been a long time fan of this channel since- independently- my two daughters who were big fans told me that you'd shown my picture and made fun of me, which they took as a great honor. I saw Showgirls on opening night. I was a sophomore in college at the time. My dorm had all-male and all-female floors. Being on an all-male floor, it was a given that we planned our monthly floor event for the release. It was showing on the main screen of the campus movie theater. It seated around 200. We arrived early and were smart to do so. Our showing sold out. The crowd was about 90% college-aged guys. The atmosphere was raucous. People were shouting at the screen and cheering anytime there was nudity. I've never had so much fun at a movie

I had my worst theater experience last year on a late showing of Indiana. It was nearly empty, just an old couple, and me with my fiancee. Ten minutes after the start of the movie 5 clearly drunk guys went in and prompted by the sight of Nazis on screen started shouting random phrases in German. Asking them nicely to keep quiet of course didn't help so I've asked the manager for help. After the short talk with security they've shut up for the whole movie. But as we're about to leave our happy bunch waited for us at the door, they've started arguing with the old couple then threatening us. In the end security had to escort us to our car in the parking lot.
Honorable mention: a guy recording parts of the Godzilla to post them online.

Besides the pizza reference, the only other thing I know about Pac Man is it was originally going to be named Puck Man, but the name was changed for obvious reasons - American fans, and such. That might also be one of those rumors that has become gaming lore over time, but I like to believe it's true. Oh, and I know Billy Mitchell claims to be the 1st person to ever "beat" Pac Man, where you score so many points that it causes the game to glitch. Also, I made a video calling Billy Mitchell a d-bag - I had a VERY modest RUclips channel with under 300 subscribers - and "Billy Mitchell" messaged me asking to have a dialogue with me. I use quotes because apparently it isn't really Billy Mitchell, but his son who runs all of his social medias. He literally scans all the socials searching for any and all mentions of his asshat dad's name, and anyone who defames him, libel-wise or else-wise, needs to be corrected - or sued if you're a RUclipsr with a lot of clout, such as Karl Jobst, who I believe Billy actually sued at one time.
And THAT's all I know about Pac Man. Plus, I used to watch the Saturday Morning Cartoon. And I swear that's all I know about it. Well, I also know that I was never any good at it. My mom was able to roll the score on the old Atari 2600 because she learned the pattern of the ghosts - something I've never been able to do.
And now THAT is all I know about Pac Man.

I like showgirls. It's deliberately unsexy in its portrayal of sex. It is so performatively cynical about the world it shows, and that's entirely the point. The (spoiler) end is that she was never the hometown girl that turned bad to get what she wanted, but that she's morally bankrupt to get what she wants because of course she is; the whole world functions that way. It's like the inversion of Basic Instinct. Veerhoven was told "yo we're gonna make a movie that capitalizes on peoples' desperation for titillation and smut, make us a movie oversaturated in it" and being the blessed troll he is, made a movie that embodies the cringe and the sardonic sleaze of that very idea.

my last theater experience was Bladerunner 2049, where an older woman sitting a few seats down in the same row kept asking her husband "Where's Harrison Ford?" until he showed up in the film then she just started talking to her husband about other bullshit after Harrison appeared

When my fiance and I started dating we saw Isle of Dogs in theaters together and one of the only 2 other groups in that theater was a young couple with a probably 3 or 4 year old that sat down right behind us and loudly kept asking her parents questions every 5 seconds, "what are the dogs doing? Where are they going? Why are they being mean?" The entire film and the parents did NOTHING to teach her that you don't talk at the movie theater. Immensely frustrating experience.

That sounds a lot like when I saw Apollo 11 (the 2019 documentary). I had seen it before but I was really excited to get to see it in a cinema, on the actual 50th anniversary and with my dad (whose own father had actually worked on Project Apollo). Anyway, some moronic old woman in the row behind us didn't shut the fuck up the entire time and kept asking her husband what was happening every thirty seconds. Completely ruined the whole experience for me.

as a dutch guy, hearing paul verhoeven exlpain it in dutch:
he was used to european and dutch standards. much more free than america by far. America is so uptight about sex, and he was already a powerhouse in hollywood:
what he said: he just wanted to pull up a middle finger to the USA attitude of pretending they dont have a big porn industry

    • @florinivan6907
      @florinivan6907 4 месяца назад

Americans are prudish about sex for two reasons. One is the higher crime rate. More crime makes them automatically harsher on everything. Americans are far more prone to panic over everything. When someone has sex its not like in Europe something natural its a gateway to potential violence. Lets be fair it is a more violent society more recently traumatized. That's how they see it. Second they want to create the perfect system because they're the primary western country and they feel they have to rise to the occasion. Europeans went through two world wars we have no illusions about human nature. We know what humans are like and how in real life there are grey zones. Americans are black and white in attitude. Americans still have illusions about human nature. So they keep trying to create a perfect system that handles everything in every scenario just right. Obviously it fails and its a temptation far closer to North Korea than western liberalism.

I've always thought this movie was a pretty straightforward take on show business, narcissism, & self indulgence. And that the over the top eroticism was actually satirical in nature.
The ending (imo) is a "justice" moment as she represents the women who have been taken advantage of by all of these powerful men. And I always took the sign to LA as a final nod that this was directed "toward" Hollywood. I think you can draw that she repeats the same stuff in LA...which means what we saw is exactly like Hollywood.
    - the "always eating" stuff is just another nod to self indulgence
    - the goddess show she stars in is her narcissism shining through in all kinds of forms (the various states of good/evil)
    - when she first gets to town and the guy takes her suitcase she is now "free from all her baggage" and starting fresh. A girl with a dream. After making all the wrong decisions she leaves town "with baggage" after she hitches a ride with the thief.

I love the fact that not only does Verhoeven not disown this movie, he's PROUD of it and more than glad to talk at length about how deliberate every creative and directorial decision in the movie was. It's usually bullshit when someone says that a movie's satire is so brilliant that it goes over people's heads, but that statement has never been more true than when applied to Verhoeven. Dude's a massive troll and piss taker and I fucking love him for it.

Rich's story about his incident at the Oppenheimer screening is genuinely triggering, when cinemas are quiet or have a very respectful audience it can be a wonderful experience but when you get people like "them" who do nothing but ruin it for the rest of us the experience is honestly hell on earth. I really think if cinemas can't control who comes into the screen then it should be in their policy to issue refunds if they are going to allow these people to stay, if I can get a refund for my food being cooked to shit then we should all be able to get refunds for movies that get shit on by inconsiderate selfish cunts.

Man, hearing Rich Evans' Oppenheimer story made me want to hug him because my experience was the complete opposite. A family even brought their baby to the movie theater and thankfully they kept their silence throughout the entire thing. I went there all by myself and there was a high school kid sitting next to me who was also by himself. He and I made small conversation about the movie, education and future goals. He reminded me of my youth and also my best friend who lives in another country. After the movie ended I said "Good luck out there." and never saw him again. Might be the best movie experience I had since Infinity War.

Former showgirl / porn creator here that can try to explain the satire with Nomi’s character. The showgirl/burlesque/pole communities does have a lot of anti sex work, rippers, and porn creators, that make it their mission to tell anyone and everyone that they are not them, even despite doing the same things basically. When I watch her character, it’s the camp version of these people who exist in these industries, when most of us don’t actually care and are just trying to pay bills and live life.

Paul Verhoeven is a god-dam American treasure, I mean he's very Dutch, but I can't listen to his heavily accidented voice talking about movies without hearing Cowboys eating American pie over a camp fire while looking at Mount Rushmore, inhaling the overwhelming smell of freedom.
