Big proud of all you but especially the floodway lads killing it in the rhythm section. The Illawarra is producing some absolute amazing musicians. I genuinely love this so much :)
Sorry, critic sucks, and I will be critical in the hope of you guys getting better. The good: You are young, can play, and have a bright future. Now the bad -and again, this is for your own improvement. When you do a cover, yes, you need to make it yours. But what you can't never do is to change the essence of the song. Just as an actor when playing a part on stage, a lot of things can be change BUT the essence of the character, many things can be changed when covering a song BUT the essence of it. I've heard many versions of this great song, from amateurs to super pros, played as big band jazz, bluegrass, full acoustic, I've heard versions I'd call less than perfect, some I loved, some I didn't like as much, I've listened to versions from bands like Poison or Red Hot Chili Peppers, which I love as bands, but I didn't love their covers. I've seen amateur, bubble gum, punk rock, and synthetized versions which are musically inferior to yours, but respects the essence of the song. The problem with your version is, you don't respect the essence of the song. And what bothers me more is, you have everything it takes to make a real kickass version. You have the musical skills. You can play. You have the talent. You sound good together. But you disregarded every detail which makes this song great, and provided an oversimplified, watered down version of it. You grabbed a super-energetic version of a song, which makes your heart pump from the very beginning, a song which is one of those which defined the 80s sound, and made it a soft-rock, mellow, borderline depressive version. You went ahead and removed every detail that makes this song special. Sorry, guys, you don't do that to an icon! Either you didn't get the song, or your musical director really screwed the pooch. I was going to go with a really nasty opinion, but... shame on me. I believe music is about collaboration, not competition. I hate to provide a negative critic, and I would shut my trap wouldn't I see potential in you. But you are a good group of musicians, therefore you have the responsibility of deliver the best music you can. Listen to Rick Beato's analysis of "Just What I Needed". I'm not affiliated to the channel. But learn the little details, the production, the heart of the song. And I hope I can see a new version from you where I can say "This is Fucking AWESOME!" Until then, I wish you the best. Give yourselves a chance. You don't deserve shitty reviews like mine.
I really like the idea of deconstructing( in the begining) but why take over the chorus and the gross guitar solo practically as it was. So it looks like a parody of old rock & new wave at the same time. It's a bit off I think.
Just heard this on the radio today. Gotta say, it's one of the limpest covers I've ever heard. This artist adds nothing to the original - even the solo is the same note for note. If the Cars' original was all red and black leather, this is taupe and ecru knit.
Well for one the solo at the end is quite different to the original. Nothing limp whatsoever about this - loved this take on it, has a darker feel. Well done to all involved.
Now I get it: most people like slavish covers that don't differ much from the original. Personally, I don't see the point in that - just listen to the original. I'm looking for new interpretations in a cover.

A band from the 20’s looking like a band from the 90’s covering a song from the 70’s. Awesome.
Freaking out over here that we're in the 20's
Innit an 80s song?

@@TheKeyboardChronicles, the notes chosen for that kbd part clash against the expectation from the original version in a really sour way. Hated it.

Kind of bland. It doesn't have the energy like it should.
