  • I purchased this 1964 International shortbed stepside half ton from a friend of a friend. It allegedly "ran when parked" sometime 40 years ago! It's got a 4 cylinder engine which is half of a 304 cubic inch V8 engine offered in larger IH vehicles. This pickup has been SOLD! Thanks for watching!

You know, I know its easy to bash on this rust bucket. But you gotta give mad respect for that 4cyl. It sat in a field like that for how long and you were able to get it to run with the help of a carb. It wasn't a seized lump of iron. This is why I like watching things like you come across. To see lost and forgotten machines come back to life! Awesome truck.

Dad found an old rusted out Studebaker pickup and pulled the wheels off of it for my farmall so I could do away with the 2 piece wheels and hopefully live a little longer. LOL

International's are fun to get parts for. They used parts from everyone and each truck was different. The had a line setting ticked which list the parts use to build your truck. My father had one and they used three different master cyilders on the 1972 models. Two different distributors. I called IH and they told me the places that line setting ticked were hidden in the truck because people missplace them often.

When I was in college in 1962, I worked for a parts company driving a delivery truck. The company had three trucks. One Ford, one Chevy, and an International. The Ford got the best gas millage, The Chevy was the smooth rider, and the International was the gas sucker. They all ran well and were good trucks and the only complaint was the driver of the International said he couldn't pass a gas station. They were all six cylinder and standard shift. I had a '65 Scout with a 152ci . Still have the intake and carb from it in my shed. Probably bolt right on to Bob the binder ! The Scout had an electric fuel pump and a boat tank when I bought it. We threw a new battery in it, and sprayed liberal amounts of Cosby sauce down the carb. Then we found the toggle for the electric fuel pump. She fired , and shot out a flame about 3 foot tall out the carb. Melted an old bath mat right to the carb trying to put it out. Drove it home.

I like that old Corn Binder. I love old step side short box trucks. I drove a '74 International to school every day. Maybe I would put the body on a newer 4x4 frame and running gear with a modern fuel injected 6 cylinder. Then I'd keep it looking like a mostly original 4x4 that would be a reliable daily driver. But then again, it looks great the way it is too. Don't knock it, it's better than most of the four door mommy cars you pick up. At least this one's a truck, and trucks are made for men.
I'm glad you're saving those old cars.

I used to hate those four cylinder motors..... then when the saw mill engine blew up, I looked and said "with some electric bolts to hold things together, we can make it work for a few days". I took a whole day switching engines around and getting to look more permanent all the time, It fired up and after a good hour of arguing about how safe my work wasn't, we put the damn thing on line... it stayed there till we sold that mill. Had enough torque to get through the circle saw as when it catches its stride, it would really do a great job and it was quieter than the Wisconsin it used to have. Biggest problem was sawdust in radiator then. Other than parts, and yes there are a lot of parts when looking for specific ones. A person needs to fix the parts one with a parts donor truck that is nice but the stuff that you don't need are good to sell.

I had a '64 International. Got about 9 miles to the gallon and the gas gage didn't work. Ran out of gas a lot. Still loved it though. My brother had the crew cab. Always reminded me of that old country song. "give me 20 acres and I'll turn this rig around". WIDE turning radius. Parts were hard to find, not because they were rare, but because nobody at the auto parts stores could figure out the number system. If you called International Harvester they said "we don't make pickup trucks we make farm machinery". No help there. Got lucky and found a guy at a parts store that used to work for International. Parts were easy after that
