Honestly, I kinda would've loved that. You think it's the typical underdog movie but in reality, Sierra learns from her mistakes and embraces her insecurities, Veronica gets smarter and becomes a better person who the guy slowly falls for during their "fake" dates. Sierra and him are still friends. The end.
yeah but getting the guy doesn't always equate to winning. Veronica found herself which is way more fulfilling than just getting another cute boy to like her.

For real. I like Veronica way more than Sierra. Sierra, sure, isnt the most popular but she clearly has confidence in herself and at least one close friend, which is a dull character, even if by technicality they are a loser. She obviously doesnt care. And besides, she straight up catfishes some guy and manipulates Veronica for that. Should have been a movie about Veronica and whatever the fuck his name was getting together.

Yeah, I was kind of hoping at the end he'd be like "YOU'RE PSYCHO WOMAN." And then the caption at the end that said, "They're pretty good talking over the phone." Made me cringe. So hard. When I saw the ad on Netflix, I thought it was a completely different movie. Think it would've been better if, because she gave the Sunflower song to Veronica, Sierra was like "Yeah I actually liked you all along." That would've made it /slightly/ more redeemable.

Makes you feel bad for actress playing Umbridge in Harry Potter because they were intentionally going for someone who "looks like a toad". A lot of movies, even way back to like the sixties, follow this formula.
They go for tactics that they consider to be unattractive for example a common tactic from the 80s that they still use now is frumpy clothes and no makeup. Which doesn’t make the person unattractive but the idea is there that “Oh if they only did a couple things they would really shine!” It’s a common trope. If you go back and watch a lot of 80s movies trying to copy John Hughes (including his own Breakfast Club), just give the quirky girl a new dress and some makeup and she is now considered attractive.

I feel like I would have hated her character less if she told him who she was the day after she started texting him and the rest of the movie was like this anonymous relationship thing .and I guess to make it interesting maybe have him guess based off clues who she is.i kinda felt like the being insecure and crying to her parents scene was a little to left field to me.

If they showed that the guy got mad at her and ignored her for a couple of scenes before she rethink her actions and apologized to him asking him for forgiveness and ended with him forgiving her and remembering how much a good girl she was, would have made it a better movie. Then again, nothing I can say since my friend did something similar and the guy who liked her forgave her too LMAO.

What if the directors wanted to show how "losers" can also be manipulative and not just the popular people?
Then why does she end up with the guy? To make the point you’re making, it would have needed a) a considerably darker tone and b) a realistic ending. But they decide to just inject catfishing and manipulation into a cliched high school romance narrative. It’s like Passengers.

There are a lot of reasons that were mentioned by other people stating why the movie and characters were so bad, but you guys made a really good point that a lot of people seemed to have missed. Sierra and Jamey had the most basic and boring of conversations. Jamey kept on saying "she's so funny" "we're so funny" but all they been doing was exchanging animal photos and essentially "sexting". Their conversations lack any kind of depth and when Jamey did try and talk about his personal life and views, Sierra didn't contribute much to the conversation than just a "yeah" "uhuh" "wow". I really disliked whoever wrote the script, this movie and the cast deserved so much better

When Sierra pretended to be deaf she could have been making fun of Jamey's brother for all he knew. And instead of wanting nothing to do with either of them after he realises the truth he starts dating Sierra for reasons.
