You can print wirelessly direct to your HP printer from
Apple Mac
Windows 7 & 10
Android 6 or later tablets or smart phones
Apple iPhone or iPad
You don’t need a Home WiFi setup
Works similarly on most 2014 and newer HP printers

I don't have home WiFi, just mobile data on android phones ...
Does the printer update the instant ink service and download software updates when you connect WiFi direct to android phones?
Or does it work if you hot-spot to the printer from a phone?
You would have to use the hotspot on your phone. It looks like it works from the replies in this thread.
