    2024 Repairing a model
    Starting open faces: 3299
    Meshlab:
    -Remove Duplicate Faces
    -Remove Duplicate Vertices
-Remove isolated Faces (by face count)
    -Remove 0 area faces
-Repair non Manifold edges (by removing faces)
    -Remesh/Reconstruct by: Subdivision of Surfaces
    RESULT: 3111 open faces
    Run above result through MeshMixer:
    -Manual select flat surfaces/delete
    -Remove Duplicate vertices
    -Make Solid
    RESULT: 2438 open edges
    Microsoft 3d Builder
-"hey, your model is a little messed up. Want to fix it? Y/N"
RESULT: No open edges, no errors
I'm a little salty that it took me 2hrs to find the 'just fix it 4head' button in a software I already owned and never used, but I can't deny you saved me some real headache. TYVM MakersMuse, you freed up my Holiday afternoon

I'm glad you mentioned Blender at the end there. Everything you demonstrated in this video is easily accomplished in that one program. There is a learning curve, but it's actually a nice sharp curve, in the sense that as soon as you get comfortable with the interface itself, you can take whatever knowledge you have about 3D models and apply it easily and quickly, doing amazing things in ways that make sense.

FYI: You can undo what you have done in MeshLab and go back to the original Mesh without starting over and reloading the file. In the Project window in the upper right of the screen, a list of mesh objects and actions is provided as you work on the loaded STL mesh file. Click on the last mesh that was done in the list. Then right click and select "Delete current mesh. It will go back to the previous mesh action that was performed. By deleting all actions except the 1st one, will put you back to the original Mesh that was loaded into MeshLab. Many mesh actions are listed and found in the Project window when you right click on a mesh item in the list.

So glad you mentioned 3D Builder! I tell beginners to use TinkerCAD and 3D Builder, then get back to me when they outgrow either of them. Nobody has come back yet! Which o me means they are now intermediates, and have learned enough to no longer need help from me. Which is kind of the whole point.

Another thing you can do with the Emboss tool in 3D Builder: emboss an image.
Use a PNG, transparent background, white foreground. The foreground will emboss onto the model! I've done this with some of the 3D Printed jewelry I made. Speaking of, 3D Builder is great for making jewelry, too.

Blender does all of these apart from the exceptional one button repair that 3d builder has but it really does take some commitment to get proficient at it. That said, I think plane cuts in Blender, when you work out how to do them, are way more useful that even Meshmixer. They don't even need to be flat :)

I quite often used Blender for smoothing, for a while I was purely going onto sites that had 3D models and would take in popular characters and fix them, remesh them in blender for 3D printing compatibility. You don't even need to learn a lot with Blender to fix models, a few hot keys, and how to setup models. If you want to get really creative you can try to put a skeleton into a model so you can repose it.

theirs one thing that would be incredibly useful, but idk if it even exists. that would be a program to take a 3d model, and "render it" to STL. their are 2 particular sets of information ignored when you take a game model or similar and go to 3d print it. the mesh's normal values, as well as the textures normal map. the normal values is most often used to make the entire model smooth, similar to the results you got with the octopus, but then they layer on the normal map which not only re-adds sharpness where it needs to be, but can straight up add more detail than it would otherwise have. that kind of program would be game changing.

In Blender, edit mode, select the part of the model you want to limit edits, and create a vertex group.
Back to object mode, modifiers have the option to work globally, or only on the vertex group.
A few more steps, same result.
Easily apply bevels or other function on limited parts of the model.
There is even the ability to create a mesh entirely through procedural means!
Math functions can generate shapes, too.

For just about every model I have printed recently I have ran through blender, whether it be FDM or Resin printing. I was intimated by it for far too long but the most recent versions (2.8 onward) it has became dead easy to model and repair most of the little issues I have with my models. It is far from perfect for fixing models that have errors in the normals or filling holes and voids compared to other software but I got really into sculpting in it and printing off my creations, and for adding bases and custom supports to my prints!

@@Uxcis It is the industry standard. Whether you or any others want to admit it. Sure there are more popular commercial applications, but in every shop I've been in, blender is installed right along with them. Game engine? Blender's got it. Cuda & openCL rendering engines? Blenders got em. Plug-ins? Yep. How can you say blender is not the industry standard, when it's installed in virtually every shop, despite their primary modeling software being commercial? Sorry "my guy," you're just wrong on this one.

    3d builder
I use it all the time for exactly that.
And it's great for defining multiple objects for a "locked" multi piece stl file.

Interesting we may give them a try too. Most work we do in FreeCAD but also use Magics and Autodesk Netfabb for some of the work.

definitely try a starter tutorial for blender- it's a great program, and the recent update is to make it easier for new users!

What about blender? Do you use it to manipulate meshes?

All the features covered in this video is available in blender and then some, I feel like blender might not be quite as "easy" as some of these programs but it's a good investment to learn because it can be used for so much more and it's extremely powerful once you know how to use it.

Great job on a great list that needed updating. I wish they would either pick back up on the development of mesh mixer or make it open source. I print life size busts and use meshmixer exclusively for cutting up the object into chunks that fit on my CR10 or Ender 3 XL (400x400x500).

Awesome video, too bad about meshmixer, used it to repair and cut apart many models and it's easy to use. Could you do a video on slicers? Just started using Simplify 3d and it's awesome (especially supports) but the cost may turn people off.

MeshLab needs more investigation. It is wayyyyy faster than Meshmixer for reduction of faces. Eg, if you do a 3D scan and end up with 10 mil faces, you really only need like say, 100K, Meshmixer will take forrrrever, where as Meshlab is like a few minutes and it's done. But yeah, if you thought Meshmixer is hard to use, Meshlab is a whole new world of user unfriendliness.

With 3D Orchard, I import STEP files from Traceparts, IGUS, Boston Dynamics and can build directly from, or onto these components. It seems to be very much overlooked.

Talking Mess Labs has no way to undo but there is that tree on the right where you where able to hid the recent action to show what it looked like before the fix. Can't you select the last action and delete it to undo the change?

Oh man, I've been converting mesh to brep in Fusion 360 whenever I need to make little adjustments or add in text or whatever. It looks so much easier with 3D Builder. haha.
