- The Zapotecs had a very complex system of irrigation related to the blessings of the Oaxaca valley, which allowed them to grow one of the most amazing trees on the planet earth! Join me in Hierve el Agua and Tule as I explain some of the nuances of this agricultural system.

The Mixes in the mountains northeast of the Tlacolula valley have a myth of “el Rey Condoy” who was their king and one day decided to wander the world. He used a walking stick in his trekking. In El Caballito Blanco there is a petroglyph said to be left there by Rey Condoy to let everyone know they were entering Mixe lands. In Santa Maria del Tule, as he wandered, he stuck the walking stick in the ground and from that grew the tree that is now the big tourist attraction
I think I have seen it! There is a big symbol of a tree painted on the right side of the road which leads to Yagul.
Do you know when these springs stopped being used for irrigation?
There are still fields at the bottom of the valley so I suspect some are still in use!
