Frank I believe you video on the FT-991A is the best I’ve seen. To the point, basic instructions, and no unnecessary frills. Great job!
The truth
My FT-991A showed up today. Just wanted to say thanks for the video I am up and running on 2m !
Congrats. Have fun.
Thank you for a good basic intro w/o the loud music or other distractions that so many others put in their videos. Your explanations are clear, concise and of value.
Well done. Covered the basics without a lot of unnecessary information.
Just ordered the FT991A as my first shack radio seems to be out of stock but expected in a few weeks. That will give me some time to start the shack build and place antennas and watch your video series. Thanks for the good content
Thanks. Just got the 991a and got my licence 3 weeks ago, this video really helped. I’ll no doubt be rewatching this a few times over the next few weeks.
Great intro. I just picked one of these up and love it. I found the software to load the repeater and menus. Great time saver.
Frank, you and I keep buying the same radios! You have EXCELLENT taste in electronics.😁 my radio purchases in the last year were the Ftm400xdr, the Ft3dr, and last week the FT991A. The Ftm400xdr is really great, I highly recommend it.
Yep, best seen review on this model. Definitely favoring this one. Thank you.
What a great video. I just passed the technician and will be getting this radio. It will make things a lot easier. Thanks
Frank, this is really well done. Good job man.
Frank you’ve done it again! Thank you!
Nicely done, no Drama on how great you are, right to the point thanks.
I bought an FT-991A over a month ago. Now with your video, I'm ready to take it out of the box. :) That, and I've had to rig the HF antenna, 70' of feed line and finish the grounding system. Thanks for taking some of the start-up aprehension away.
Thank you for the kind words. I know how you feel. Good luck and be safe. -73
I just ordered this radio and won’t receive it for several weeks. I decided I would check out the videos on it while I waited. I am so glad I came across this one! Thank you so much for such a detailed video! I had no problem hearing every word. I am a brand new ham also, so truly appreciate that you actually showed how to reach menus, etc. in such detail. So many of the RUclipsrs assume everyone has had access to an Elmer and with current health issues, many of us have not. Your video style is straightforward and not condescending! Ignore the trolls and keep producing great videos! Thank you!
Thanks for the quick guide to get me up and running!
Just today got the 991A your video has helped. Lots.
Your fine imformative instructions makes me want to buy one of these. I like that your instructions are slow, gives us time to obsorb what we are hearing.
Thank you. I appreciate that. Take care, -73
Thank you Frank. You do such a great job on these. I have the FT3 also and watched your videos for it. I am seriously considering getting the 991a with a chameleon mpas antenna for portable ops.
You'll love it! but... with the chameleon you might need an external antenna tuner (like the AT100Pro-2). It really is a great combo.
This was great. Opened up some new menus for me.
I was thinking about purchasing a 991A, thanks for the tutorial!
Its a great radio
Excellent video, thank you, I will be watching it again.
Very cool multi band radio and very easy to navigate. I might pull the plug and get me one. Thanks for the excelent video.
TNX Romero for "shortcut" guide!!!
I’ve owned this radio a couple of days. I like your video, your approach and honesty.
Thank you. Good luck. -73
Thanks. My hubs and I took the T and G tests yesterday, but I haven't much of a clue as to how to operate this radio. Appreciate your time.
That's wonderful news. I'm sure you will have many joyful hours with the radio. I hope the very best for both. Take care. -73.
I’m thinking of buying a Yaesu FT 991A and I found this video quite informative. Thank you.
Thank you Rick. I hope you find the radio you want. Good luck. -73
Thanks Frank it was a big help. This is easiest way to go about.
Excellent video. Hope to see more for beginners like me.
What a fantastic video, thanks so much!
Thanks for the walk through
Thanks so much for this video. Saved me tons of time digging through the manual. Much appreciated. W4GTT
Tnx Frank.Great help,I'm getting a FT991a next week.God bless USA.Family over the pond,Steve M6KLR.
Just got one shipped to me...Thanks for the info...I turned it on and now i want the FTDX101 MP.
I know what you mean. Good luck -73.
Awesome Basic Information !!
Thanks for the video. It really helps!
Good start!
Thanks for the video!
Excellent Video , thx
Outstanding!
Thank you young man. Your video has really helped me set up my radio.
I’m glad it helped. -73
Great stuff 👍👍
Great show and good job 👍
Thanks.
This is a complicated but wonderful radio. I’m so glad I bought it and I’m grateful for your fine video. I learned a lot. Subscribing. MikeinMinnesota
I bought this radio 2 years ago. It has enough menu items to service a 200 table restaurant. I decided to relegate it primarily to UHF/VHF use and bought a FTdx-101D, which is much easier to use for me, especially in dragging weak signals out of the noise on HF bands. You give a good demonstration on basic use of it in this video. Explaining all the subtleties of using it would take many more hours.
Thanks Eddie. -73
THE WAY YOU TAKE YOUR TIME TO EXPLAIN I HAVENT BUY IT YET. I THINK IAM. ARE WE FAMILY? :)
:)
good video - well done
Thank you for this useful beginners demo, much appreciated !
73, PH0EB
Excellent 👌
Good video Frank - thanks for sharing - some useful tips! Just one point though, this radio's screen is awesome, not hard to read at all. Not sure if you need to visit the opticians Frank, but this is one of the best displays I have seen on any radio! :) I just thought I would clarify as I felt you might put a few people off.
Good video on the 991A. I'm tossing back and forth between the 991A and a IC7300
I did as well. I like the IC7300, but like any radio you have to compromise. What I like about the 7300 is the waterfall has a better refresh rate and better options in making it look the way you want it. In addition, the menu system is more intuitive. For example, you can't touch the frequency on the 991A and change it, you would think so. It's a touch screen, but it doesn't. On the 7300, you touch the frequency, you can change it. Things like that, make operating the radio easier. But, everyone has their needs. I hope you find your radio.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Have subscribed.
Nice video
For a newbie General w/ no practical experience not yet on HF, your presentation was excellent. I'm leaning strongly towards the 991A. Your video removed some of the angst associated w/ programming any radio. I'm committed to the Yaesu platform, it seems, cuz of reliability and better programming articulation between their radios. KJ7TKR / Reno, NV
Thank you very much for your kind words. May I make a suggestion. You should look into the IC7300. The 991A does have more features, but the interface on the IC7300 is well done. If you have a chance to see these radios at a store, you might notice those difference. Good luck. -73
the FT991A is a great rig
Very helpful, thank you. Just got mine today.
@@frankwc0o Hey Frank, may I ask you a quick question? When keying up on your 991A, do you have to wait a few seconds before it transmits voice? When I key down, the radio sounds like it's ramping up, then when when I talk, it starts transmitting half of what I said. It's not instantaneous like a handheld. I performed this test with My TH-D74 in another room and it always cuts out half my speech. But once the radio is fully ramped up, it is instantaneous. Kind of weird. Like the radio needs to spool up before carrying my voice. Just curious if you've experienced anything like that. Thank you, Sir!
@@frankwc0o No, I wish that is what it was. I'm just using a simplex freq. I have my TH-D74 across the room and just keying down. The radio (991a) shows it's in transmit, but I have to wait a few seconds before the radio fan comes on to start talking. After being in QSO, it becomes instantaneous - going back and forth, but if the radio goes back to idle, I have to key it up first, then begin the QSO. Weird, right? Thanks for replying Frank - truly appreciate it!
@@frankwc0o Thank you, Frank! I contacted Yaseu and advised me to return it. Not a known issue I guess. Thanks again my man! 73's!
Thank you vy 73
Seems to me that a lot of people downgrade the Yaesu FT-991A for it's menu system. (In the 'Ford vs Chevy' battle). I find it very intuitive, as you so well explain. Most of the settings are 'Set it and Forget it'. I find that the Yaesu and the IC-7300 radios are both excellent and have a valid use for every user. However, the Yaesu is a 'Shack-in-the-box' with it's digital and 2m/70cm bands. This alone made me choose the Yaesu. I also use the Yaesu aviation FTA-750L transceiver and chose it as well for it's additional features for it's price point. You also can't go wrong with the added 3yr warranty. A Square Trade 3yr warranty...$240. Add that to the cost of an IC-7300. Best Regards and 73's.
Hi Frank, thnx for this very usefull vid! This is the radio I'm going to purchase on the short run. I'm hoping to get my licence before the end of the year, after being on 11 meters for 40 years LOL ;)
Best 73's from The Netherlands!
10 buddy good 4 nice rig
I HAVE BEEN TO BUSY TO TURN MINE ON KG6MN
Mines in the ysu shop
An Excellent video Thankyou. G0MRR
Wow!!! Loved this video. I just purchased the FT991A. And also got my General license in December. I wonder if you will show how to work Digital Modes with this radio. Thanks! Excellent video♥️
Congratulations on earning your general license. In this video I don’t talk about digital modes.
Frank , I have enjoyed your videos so far keep up the good work. I have the ft-991 a non- A model. 73 AE4OY WILLIAM EM-81UF
Great video Frank 73 from kb2uew
Subbed! Thx
Thanks Robert. Good luck.
Great video...wait g for my 991A to arrive...
Paul K1YOU
Thanks for the video. I get my 991a on Saturday so this will help me setup. Have you set this up with an SDR or for FT8 (digital ops)?
I need help and I'm learning slowly. Thank you
My apologies, Frank. I didn't realize I wasn't subbed to your channel. I have corrected that omission. :) See you in the chats
Have you done a pan adapter on this rig yet. I’m trying to decide on a new radio and this one is at the top of the list but really want the monitor hook up.
Frank, thank you so very much for all the FT-991A videos. I am new to Ham Radio and just purchased a FT-991A. I really didn't know where to start but, I am going to follow along to learn more from your RUclips channel. I asked myself when I bought this radio, how am I going to learn how to use it well, thanks to you, I can learn all about my FT-991A and how to operate it. Can you tell me the purpose of the VFO A and B. Thank You Jan
That’s wonderful. Have fun with your radio. -73
Frank you have had the radio for eight months now and also had an opportunity to try an Icom 705 what are your thoughts would you buy the 991a again or try something like a IC-7300 and a separate UHF /VHF rig? I got my ticket in November 2020 and upgraded to General in December, working on my Extra now. Looking to build my shack and it seems to be down to the IC-7300 or the FT991A I am leaning toward the Yaesu but still undecided.
Thanks again for the content
Like the Swiss Army knive on your desk :)....greetings from Switzerland HB3XFJ
I love my Swiss Army knife. My favorite is the Tinker. I’m not too much of a fan of the super tinker. Hello from the United States, have a great week. -73
Just wondering, does this Yaesu allow for a simulated analog S-meter, like the FTdx-3000 does?
Thank you, I cant figure how to set repeater offset, I can set + or - but not the freq?
Is there a port on the back to plug in an external monitor ?
Great video, helped with me getting my FT-991A started in VHF/UHF. I'm late to the game, lol. I got my Technician license almost 2 weeks ago. Am I correct that the TUNE built into this unit does not work for VHF/UHF ??
Thanks, KK7CWG
Yes, the Tune doesn't work on the VHF/UHF. Someone told me that the antennas that you create or buy, don't need that much tuning. Well if you create a bad antenna, that is a different story. Good luck. -73
Great Video Frank, I've watched a few times now and probably will watch a few more. I do have a question for you if don't mind. I just bought my 991a off a family member and the VFO A indicator leds are not lit even after a reset. I can push split and the red indicator on VFO B will light but every video I've seen everyone's indicator lights are on , all others seem to work the rx indicator, lock, and fast and I've seen the red vfo b but haven't seen the lights on VFOA I don't think it's a problem really, just wondering why? Thanks 73
I haven’t experienced that particular situation with my radio. I would recommend you calling Yeasu directly. Speak to a technician, one on one. They work here in Southern California. Good luck with the radio. -73
Can you scan without using the buttons on the microphone ? All your videos are great !
How can you just set the mic gain like that wen you have to set the compresser so u don't over mod..if ya going to do it do it right
Want one so bad
Frank another great video. Looking at getting one of these. Have you used the RT program with this yet? Or is that a possibility? 73 - KO4KMA
@@frankwc0o I'm looking into it. I'm currently studying for my amateur extra and so haven't had the time to do a deep dive yet. I think it would be nice if the program would do my vx-6 and the 991A. Then I could more easily transfer the VHF/UHF frequencies offsets etc between radios. I am still a newb and don't have any HF capabilities yet so you may be correct regarding the low number of frequencies. If I end up getting it I'll let you know Thanks again.
@@frankwc0o thanks! I was afraid that was the case you saved me some time there. I liked your video showing the RT with the VX-6 it was really helpful and the reason I asked about it for the 991a! keep up the great work.
Hi Frank, I am hoping you can answer a question for me in reference to the FT-991A. I am in the market for another antenna because my, MyAntenna was struck by lightning. I have the Yaesu FT 991A and I was wondering if you know this, will this radios internal tuner, tune a random wire? I am asking because I only experience with the MyAntenna, 80-10 EFHW antenna. I did love this antenna but, was wondering if I need to get an external tuner for using a random wire antenna. Thank you Frank.
I would say no. I would get a dedicated tuner for a random wire. If you antenna was close to resonating, then yes the built-in tuner would be fine. But for random wire I wouldn't count on it. As alway, see what other folks have to say about that. Good luck. -73
Thank you Frank.
@@frankwc0o
Hi Frank, are you still using this rig? I would like to see more videos on it from you.
I gave my rig to my best friend. He couldn't afford one, so I gave him mine. That's why you don't see more videos on this rig. Although, I'm sure there are more resources out there which will help you in your next adventure. Good luck. -73
Looks like you had the radio in 2020. How has it held up, was looking to get one. Thx
Two reasons why I like this radio. It has HF/VHF/UHF and it compact. Although, I like the interface of the IC7300 and the waterfall on that radio.
Do you know why this radio does not let you PTT on FRS or GMRS? And many other stations?
yes, it does not let you in order to keep you out of a hospital
The only ham radio I know of that will let you transmit on FRS and GMRS is a Baefeng. The high end radios follow the FCC rules that has them only transmitting in the HAM bands. although, like most ham radios you can do a "MARS/CAP' mod that extend the transmitting frequencies.
when you did the radio check the volume was turned down. this is the radio I want.
Jak zmodyfikować to radio żeby działało 446 pmr
Great video Frank. Can you put your email on QRZ so i can contact you regarding the 991A? , i am going to purchase one next week.
I am a novice, I got my license 3 yr ago and have nOt done a thing since. I ordered yeast 991 and I need HELP. I do not have any antenna. O now have some time. I am a retired pharmacist.
Hello, could you tell me how you have been able to transmit at 446.0000 please?
Watch from here. ruclips.net/video/kKc7RdenCGY/видео.html
Yes please
Does SWR meter work on VHF/UHF with this radio?
It does. But most of the time the VHFUHF antennas are very good and thus you don’t see any SWR movement.
@@frankwc0o Oh okay, thanks. I'm considering getting an 991A once I can get around to putting up an HF antenna. Like the idea of one radio for both repeaters and FT8.
Have you made a vid for storing memory channels?
Great video however. I just received and have been on the air with my 991-A. Love it!

Diamond 3 band. Up about 32 ft
I haven't set up my HF yet but I'm going be using a dipole.
Cool. This Video is aging well.
And the radio. -73
