    You know it's a good upgrade when person who owns the prior model genuinely feels like they are missing out. I do not feel that in this case. At least give me a watt or two on the 1.25 meter band.

    • @USAFJUNKIE
      @USAFJUNKIE 2 года назад +4

      I don't think it was supposed to be an "upgrade." The way I understood it was that the fire that destroyed a bunch of computer chips in Japan took out the chips Yaesu used for the FT-3. The FT-5 was a mild redesign using a different chip in order to continue making a similar radio and keep sales up.

    • @sidaytona
      @sidaytona 2 года назад

      @@USAFJUNKIE I agree with you, but Yaseu pitches the FT5D as "a full-featured C4FM handheld transceiver with superior operability and new sophisticated functions."
      Being able to dunk a radio under water qualifies as a sophisticated new function?

    • @USAFJUNKIE
      @USAFJUNKIE 2 года назад +1

      @@sidaytona I think that depends on the user and their typical operating environment. I specifically bought the VX-6 for my first HT because I really enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, etc. I wanted something that wouldn't get ruined in the rain or if I dropped it in a puddle.
      That and the better speaker/Rx audio quality could make the difference for some.

  • @kelvin0mql
    @kelvin0mql 3 года назад +5

    I think you should build an angled board with a bottom ledge, possibly with a rubbery/grippy mat, so that you can reliably set HTs and similar gear under the camera at a non-glare angle, and they sit still. Would save you a lot of fiddling, I bet.

  • @PGE564
    @PGE564 3 года назад +3

    Ah, finally they dealt with the battery problem I've had with these batteries and belt hook. The problem is that the belt clip is attached to the battery, and if you tug on the radio it pulls on the battery and disconnects the power from the radio. Also pulling on the battery weakens the retaining clips on the battery as well as frequent battery change outs also weaken the battery clips. These batteries are compatible with the VX-8 series, FT-1, 2, 3, and now FT-5 radios. Changing out batteries often is hard on the battery clips. Avoid dropping the radio, this could break off a battery clip or two, and without the clips you are using rubber bands, or women's hair ties (little black or colored bungy loop) to hold the battery to the radio, and this old quickly. You end up with batteries that hold a good charge but not the radio. Looks like a great radio. VX-8G, FT-1D, and FT-2D. 7 3 de VE7PGE

    The static "MEM SCAN" message display, instead of showing frequencies cycling while scanning, is completely and utterly visually unappealing and disappointing for the FT-5D, and wholly unexpected and undeserving of the current Yaesu flagship HT product. If more prospective buyers knew this before purchase, I guarantee it would affect sales- which is my mission. The underlying logic is that there would be SO MANY memories entered, there would be a lag in scanning due to the display. The FT5 has 900 memories I believe. What local area has 900 repeaters, simplex freq's and so on within HT operational range? Efficient use of the memory bank system brings the number to scan down to a far less subset. So when we really talk about scanning speed lag, is this REALLY a problem for the vast majority of hams to warrant a FORCED never-before-seen different display of memory scanning? I think NOT. THIS NEEDS FIXED NOW.

    When you're referring to the Ingress Protection rating, there's no "V" in it. The phrase would just be "IP rating", and the values are two characters. The first character is for dust/particle protection, and if they didn't bother to certify it for that at all (as is the case here) that character is given as "X". The second character is for water protection, and that's what they bumped up. So, its IP rating is IPX7.

  • @slick8086
    @slick8086 Год назад +1

    there is no V in IP7 you are probably just used to saying IPV4 for Internet Protocol Version. IP in this case stands for Ingress Protection and there should be 2 digits, the first is for solids (dirt/dust/sand) the second is for liquid. IP7 should be IPx7 if they didn't test for solids. 7 means temporary immersion up to 1 meter.

I've never owned a YAESU HT which made it more confusing. Should never have even mentioned the FT3DR hence the number of complaints about the 3DR that had no help in making a decision regarding the 5DR. I've always had ICOMS but after years with the IC-91A (since 2006) and other's in prior years I wanted a change. I love the ease to add, change and delete frequencies and many other functions I will have to learn. @@tylerdean980 It does everything I need, and it puts out the expected power... Unlike a few other radios I've used haha. It has fusion etc but isn't compatible with a hotspot. I don't use the fusion on it anyway but that seemed strange. It's single line display, but I've put everything I want to monitor into memory and it'll scan through about 100+ memories in 3 or 4 seconds. It seems to be a marmite radio, love or hate it but it meets all my needs. And it fits in the larger 50cal box

    Are you having problems with the SD card? I have seen where some are having problems inserting and ejecting the card. I cannot read or write to the card. The radio recognizes the card and creates folders on the card, but it won't read from, write to, or format a card. I've used multiple new Sandisk cards, so the problem is the radio, not the card.

None of the programming softwares (Chirp, ADMS-11, RTSystems) have a "receive CTCSS" column (called "ToneSql" in Chirp but same thing). The Yaesu manuals say nothing about it. Not sure if you have previously discussed this, if so I missed it. Not that big of a deal I guess on the receive side, right.

    I like the touch screen, GPS feature, and the small form factor of the unit, so I am not knocking either of these HT's. Those with FT-5DRs, could you please check the following.
    Received my unit yesterday and immediately noticed the following issue.
    When in dual VFO mode (VFO-A on HF or 50 MHz band/VFO-B on the default frequency 433.00 MHz), all other settings system default, I get two or six brief pulses of RF noise approx. every 60 seconds.
    Switching to mono VFO-A (HF band or 50 MHz) the pulses disappear, switching back to dual VFO mode as above, the RF pulses reappear.
    The source of the RF pulses are not external to the radio, duplicating the receive conditions on my FT-2DR there are no RF pulses.
    Tried re-setting to factory defaults and the problem is still there.

      I have this issue with my FT 3DR... super frustrating. I have used a Yaesu FT70D and Baefangs UV-5Rs and Kenwood D74 never having this issue. I have a Kenwood D74 and prefer that HT to all others; however, now that Kenwood doesn't make an HT I need to baby it. I was hoping the 3DR could work but I am overwhelm with the RF pulse noise issue too. And it's only 2 months old with lite usage. I was going to reach out to Yaesu but reading this comment and others I think Yaesu's quality has gone away! I am going to stick with iCOM and Kenwood for my future needs.

      Source is likely some digital RF noise that's external to the radio.
      Walking about half a block or so away from where I live the RF noise disappears.
      Still can't explain why my FT-2DR doesn't pick it up under identical receive conditions or why it disappears on my unit when switching to single VFO-A mode but there we are, another source of RF noise to add to the evergrowing list.
      I like the FT-5DR a lot, audio and sensitivity on HF is much improved over the FT-3DR.
