I just got my FT-3DR today and pushed my first programming setup to the radio. I’ll be testing it out for the first time tomorrow. This is my first “real” radio other than a Baofeng, so I’m excited to start learning about APRS and YSF.
I grabbed the FT3DR earlier this month and I'm really enjoying it. Very easy to learn (I'm brand new to HAM), program and operate. After just a couple of days with it, I can confidently navigate the menus and access my numerous programmed memory banks. Still waiting on my callsign unfortunately. Having a great time listening and learning the radio in the mean time.

If your pi-star is transmitting you won't be able to join a different channel until there is a break in TX, and the radio can talk to the pi-star to change the "room". It worked for joining cq-uk because there was a break, when you hit the americalink channel the radio was receiving which meant your pi-star was transmitting and not listening. And thanks Josh, you cost me some money with a pi-start hotspot and a new ft3dr. :)
I got mine in February, at a discount because open-box, a couple of weeks before passing the Technician exam (studying for General now). I EDC it with a Signal Stick antenna, which I tie in a loop when I put it away at work. Thanks for the video! KN6NPZ, 73

My very first radio was the VX-7R over 13 years ago, and the radio was so advanced and easy to use that it helped accelerate the learning curve. It was worth it, and just today I ordered a FT3RD as an upgrade, but not a replacement. I have am all for buying the best you can afford because I got a lot of value out of doing that.
I went FT60R- VX6R and now thinking about the FT3R and I still have not been able to get my Tech-General because of CV test suspension. Some bad reviews of FT3R is it worth it over the 2 I already have?
@@skyscratcher8825 I would say YES, only because none of your other two radios are DUAL VFO (dual band yes, but NOT dual VFO). Personally I find that to be a HUGE feature and I use it all the time. Its literally like having two separates radios in one. I have my own crossband repeater and home and with Dual VFO, it simplifies TX/RX needs when operating a local x-band repeater since there is no way to provide a TX shift on the same band. Even useful if its something simple as using talking to someone simplex during a card ride, and monitoring a repeater at the same time in case you go out of range. I wont own anything less than a Dual VFO radio. It doesn't have to be the FT-3DR, but that's the main reason I would pick it over the two you have.

Just in case anyone was wondering the significance of the hyphen between your callsign and SSID: it is not a negative number as he states in the video, it's just a hyphen to distinguish it from your callsign. I'm sure he was just trying to say hyphen, but I wouldn't want anyone to think that hyphen has any significance to the APRS system beyond what I stated above.

Just bought an FT-3DR, and have a question - My volume knob (the lower larger one) wobbles a bit. Seems looser than it should be. Is this normal for this HT? Thanks!
Just have to add this......and not meant to be "that guy" but some that watched may be put off by the problem. So, did you figure out that you were clicking ok before clicking receive? Needed to tell the radio what it was doing, before doing it.
Thanks for all the great information you've shared over the past years. I've learned so much from you. Question on this one: at 36:26 you're showing the repeater book search, which I have now opened up using version 6.2.6 of FT-3D Programmer from RT Systems, but my window does not have a colored column header bar, and I cannot sort by clicking on "Repeater Notes". Is there an obvious reason this would happen?
I am considering buying this Radio. I already have the VX-6 and FT-70, both each with it's programing cable, from RT Systems. Do I need to purchase a new programing cable to work with the FT3D or can I use one of these cables?
Will the FT3DR allow monitoring only for new test passers waiting on data base display? If so what if anything do you enter when you boot up the radio? Thanks for your help; anyone?
KC3QAC here, I am frustrated because I’ve gone through all the setup steps but APRS pro refuses to acknowledge my beacon and mark my location on the map! 73 de Tom
Hey ! I buy one ! It's your fault ;) any recommandation for the antenna ? ( I will use 430-446mhz and scan the rest) thanks for the videos which allow me to come back to this hobby :)
Is APRS still a thing? I heard the guy died and destroyed the code. Also when I had tried it it kept pinging the repeater and they didn't like it. So what are suppose to connect to and ping your locatio and stuff?
With a little extra effort, you can program any HT with CHIRP, rather than spend an average $50 more for software and a proprietary cable from RT Systems.
just plug whatever in, it does not really matter unless you are using the APRS or transmitting on a digital mode. You can always change it in the menu too when you get your license.
I purchased this radio as my first “quality” ht. I’m an AMRRON corps member and I’m wondering what suggestions you have for the best use of the different banks?
You could have an emcomm bank. A bank of local nets. A band for different locations you go to with different repeaters. The list goes on and on. Cheers.
Just ordered radio and software from HRO and just noticed it didn't include cable. What programming cable is being used? And you have an affiliate amazon link with it so I can help support the channel?
Josh- have you ever seen the FT3DR get stuck in transmit mode when sending an APRS Beacon (FMW - > BCN-TX)? I followed your instructions and it was working fine for about 30 minutes, and I had sent a few beacons, but then it randomly got stuck in transmit mode (I took a video of it happening on my iphone). It seems to have been a one time fluke and has not happened again. I was using a Diamond SRH77CA antenna. Thoughts? Should I be concerned? I got the radio a few days ago. I called HRO and they said to keep an eye on it if it happens again.

Going to change the question pool for the EXTRA class license? Where do I get a list of questions that are on current test for all three? I have been studying back and fourth between the 3 test randomly. But if there is copies of current test questions? I would love to know those. :)
Almost ready to take my tech test.. I like the yeasu FD3 DR..but I am in the house most of the time ( I'm old) can you connect an antenna that will mounted outside..I live in a mobile home in a valley (vt) or look for a mobile or base? Something comparable to the FD 3.
can't afford $1000.00 + radio..thanks I learned alot front channel..
Hi there!... Thanks for a great video!... I've just ordered a shiny beautiful FT3DE (UK) but still haven't passed my Foundation Licence... (a few more weeks...) Can I still turn it on as a listen-only device?... Can you bypass / enter a temporary call-sign?... In advance, thank you very much for your time. 73

@@HamRadioCrashCourse ...it was THAT simple!!!... 🤣 ...all my apologies, I must be very tired... Anyway, THANK YOU and have a nice evening!... 👍🏻
Just bought an FT-3DR, and have a question - My volume knob (the lower larger one) wobbles a bit. Seems looser than it should be. Is this normal for this HT? Thanks!
If you don't have a license yet can you still power the FT3DR up and listen since you don't have a Call Sign to enter at start up?
You don’t need to lower power. Just don’t transmit. Use 00000 to start it up. You need to add the call when you get licensed.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thank you and thank you for your videos
I wanted to buy an Icom but I think the ID52 fell short of the mark in relation to this and the time to buy is now.
Just have to add this......and not meant to be "that guy" but some that watched may be put off by the problem. So, did you figure out that you were clicking ok before clicking receive? Needed to tell the radio what it was doing, before doing it.
This is great
Thanks for all the great information you've shared over the past years.
Problem - only chirp can copy repeaters from the internet! and I find this invaluable!
RTSystems software can do that too.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse - Yeah but I am cheap! :)
How is this compared to the vx 6r in terms of the analog capabilities?
Someone said this was easier than DMR. But this looks way more complecated than DMR.
It’s easier.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Must just be the myriad of features! Well guess I'm going to have to get one (Said every Ham ever) lol! Great video by the way.
@@arlo12345678910 agree. Many features are rewarding if you put the time to learning and exploring
@@MrTonyd1954 Learning and expoloring is what it's all about! 73!
Do I still need to watch the FT2 video to understand my FT5DR
They are similar. But I have videos the ft5 too.
So can I program it on a Mac book Catalina ?
If I don't have a call sign yet, how do I bypass the prompt?(Yes, I understand that I'm not allowed to transmit, including kerchunking.)
just plug whatever in, it does not really matter unless you are using the APRS or transmitting on a digital mode.
Cheers.
I am a general
I have a ft 70 d I love mine
I don’t have any hf gear
My call is wa1pjg
I live in a nursing home
Just ordered radio and software from HRO and just noticed it didn't include cable. What programming cable is being used? And you have an affiliate amazon link with it so I can help support the channel?
The RTSystems cable will work. OR, simply use the second to program the micro Sd card and use that to load the radio.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse thank you I
Can these radios be used as police scanners as well?
Yes, but not as effective as a scanner as a proper scanner is. Further, this doesn’t do p25
Is there a 12 volt charger option for this, for traveling, that I can charge with solar or cigarette lighter?
Can you get the FT3dr to work with APRS DROID? Or would you still need a TNC for that? Thanks!
I'd only worry if it happens more often.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thank you. My brother got his technician License when he was 10 years old (about 25 years ago). I finally got my technician in December and planning on the general soon. My brother just got his extra. We love the channel! Big fans :)

Thanks for the informational video well done. I would like to know if anybody knows how to dial up a irlp repeater using a Yaesu ft3d? No key pad for dialing? I would love to figure it out. Thanks
Hello from k2csx mark in lockdown new York city
Question: are you related to joe and John nass,.. that used to live I. St. Joseph, mo
I don’t know.
Forgive me a silly question, but what is the character limit for displaying a channel name?
If you purchase the RTS Software for Mac (Download version), program and then save to Micro SD- Can the saved frequencies be uploaded to radio from card port after installation? (would avoid buying cable) ?
Does the RT software for SD card download via site no cable needed as i read it. Does it have all the frequency channels available for me to thumb through or must I add them manually on the spreadsheet?
Hi! Could you do a fast test for me? to input 27.225mhz and set the receive mode to FM? I need a confirmation that this works since it's a deal breaker in buying this ht and there's no shop near me that has it in stock to do a real life test
like the look of this but isn't the functionality of the id51a with nearest dstar repeater finder better
Maybe in that specific aspect sure. But the ft3dr does more.
Both radios have their pros and cons. That’s why I have both. I love the touch screen and extra features of the yeasu. I also like the if-51 for its menu system design. Can’t go wrong with either radio. Great investments, addictive hobby
Supposedly these are wide band radios and can RX Air Bands and 222-420mhz Gen 1. I can not find anyone monitoring Air Band with this radio on YT if that even works. Also what is 222-420mhz Gen 1 listing in specs, does that mean I can listen to Military Air Bands as well? Would love to know before purchase?
Yes I listen to air band am all the time on this radio. I live on the lax flight path. Lots of traffic.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse OK cool I am next to March ARB in Riverside and want to listen to inbound and outbound traffic.
Are there any base stations that aren't 4 grand with a built in power supply?
No. Most ham radios do not have built in supplies. Further, you don’t really want that anyways.
Hey Josh! Finally pulled the trigger on a FT3DR. My question is, does anyone know if you can take an SD backup of all my memory channels from an FT1D and transfer that to a FT3DR?
Awesome! Sadly no, the SD cards from the other radios will not port over.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse Thats definitely bummer that they didn't maintain backwards compatibility for hams that are upgrading. A quick SD card swap would be such a simple way to get a new radio up and running with all the frequencies stored in an old radio without the need to use a computer. Oh well...
I agree. At least you get accessories that are backwards compatible.
What antenna are you using there for the APRS?
On the radio I almost always use Signal Stuff Signal Stick antennas. signalstuff.com/?ref=622
Is software cable necessary( any advantages over SD?) or SD card is just fine for RT Systems?
Got a question I have an old tv antenna that sits on Top of a tower On my property is there a way to rig that to use for a ham radio?
Haha... Only one way to find out!
probably not, the feed line is like 75 ohms, versus 50 ohms.
how do you set up full duplex mode on the FT3DR. Cant find anything in their manual to do this. Trying to setup for satellite work
The fr3dr does not do full duplex.
will this transmit on 161.100 mhz
What cable do I need to be able to program the ft3dr?
Usb a ton usb mini.
I'm a bit confused... it sounds like you are saying that after dropping €400+ on a raido that I need to spend another €100 in order to be able to program it. Seriously!?
No. I didn’t say that. The yaesu software is free. And you can program the SD card.
@@HamRadioCrashCourse ok. That's better. I had heard not good things about the Yaesu s/w and thought you were confirming that it wasn't any use.
A bit more pre video prep please. I am a noob…. Very confused.
Can MURS and GMRS work on this unit?
Like most Japanese radios, you have to do the MARS mod if you want to transmit on those frequencies.
