New Cartier Tank Must XL - An oddly affordable mechanical Cartier.

- This stunning piece of history is part of the Cartier Must line. The Cartier Must Tank XL is the only watch in the new 2021 collection that has a mechanical movement ( 1847 MC ). The Tank Must is a rather large watch and unfortunately, it's too large for my wrist. There are some beautiful timepieces in the 2021 collection, but they are all quartz.
I'm not against quartz movement. I'm just not interested in paying just under $3,000 for a quartz movement, with no water resistance and, no date.
Although I don't see the " value " in the other timepieces in this collection I do see the value in The Tank Must XL. This watch retails for $4,100 and is more than " just a pretty watch ". I will give you my thoughts on the Cartier Tank Must XL. Hopefully, this will give you some insight as to whether this watch should be your next luxury watch purchase.

Love my Tank Must XL. Congratulations! This is the first of your videos I've seen, and it proved to be one of the best around. And I loved the shot you took at Christian lol. Liked and subscribed, can't wait to see more
Thank you! I hope you enjoy your tank.
i hear Christian is fuming at this video.
What's your wrist size buddy?
@@ShashwatShukla10 7"
@@rjblue42 I have a 6.25 inch wrist and this is the only Tank model I like other than the Louis which I can't afford. Not sure if it will be manageable on my wrist!
I deliberated for months over the tank XL auto and the large quartz must as my 1-year wedding anniversary gift from my wife. I have a 7 inch wrist and my daily wearer is a blue Pelagos. I knew I wanted a tank but I just could not get comfortable with the smaller size and the quartz movement in the large model. The value of spending slightly more for an in-house Cartier movement and a size that was more befitting to my wrist won me over. My wife got it for me on the black strap. I knew the bracelet was too much. I’ve come to not mind the date window as it has become relatively un noticeable and useful, although I originally wished it were not there. The two-tone texture of the dial with guilloche in the center and sunburst around the perimeter came to dazzle me. I’ve had it since December ‘21 and have come to absolutely adore this watch and have never regretted my choice for a second. I even got the caseback engraved. This watch is pure elegance and magic and for those on the fence between this and the large, my choice was made clear and I’ve never looked back. God willing it will be passed down to my children someday and it reminds me of my beautiful wife every time I look at it and wear it. I love this watch so much that I routinely wear it at home on the couch in the evenings while watching tv or reading. My wrist has always felt naked without a watch on it, even at home.
I have been going through the same dilemma for the exact same reasons. I need to get to a Cartier boutique and try on the Large and XL to know. I want the XL to be the winner for my 7.5” wrist as the quartz movement in the large size for almost $3K just annoys me.
I've spoiled myself with this exact model few months ago and it's my absolute favorite one over any others I own. It's comfortable, it's slim, it's a strap monster as long as you feed her with slim alligator quality made straps, no matter the color, she is the paramount of accessible class, to me.
Do you get your straps directly from Cartier?
@@Dimpapiris I've got a local artisan specialized in crafting straps for luxury watches, he actually works for Omega and Cartier as well.
@@pinkbono can you share his info? Would love to get a few straps
Tried the XL on this past weekend. Definitely on my list of future purchases. I'm a big watch girl, with my largest being a Speedmaster Racing co-axial master Chronometer Chronograph @ 44.25 mm. I'm pretty tall, so luckily I feel like this Cartier XL is perfectly suited for me, personally. The other sizes looked super tiny, even though I have relatively dainty wrists. I could see how this could swallow somebody up who's a little more petite though. Regarding desk diving, I purchased wrist resting pads for my keyboard to alleviate them. Gotta keep those watches nice and scratch free (unless you're like me and scratch most everything the first month). Ugh 🙄
Really good macro shots, very informative. Keep up the good work.
I got one back in January and it’s been one of my favorites!
Thanks for sharing, I got mine today with the leather strap, the watch is amazing, I was debating between the Large model and the XL and today the XL speak for itself, the size is perfect for my wrist and is very versatile, is very classic and iconic, that you can wear the watch casually or elegant, the large Cartier Tank is classic however, is a quartz and the XL is the only one with an in- house 1847 MC automatic movement, despite of the size, the watch has its own classic, character with elegant lines and the most important, the history from the Cartier Tank family for more than a century, congratulations for the acquisition of your Cartier Tank Le Must XL, enjoy it 😉
I put my name down on a waiting list for the XL Tank with a leather strap, can't wait to try it on!
What is your wrist size?
@@nikolaignjatovic2012 6 1/2
@@LocalWatchGuy Good luck, I’m sure that you will love it!!!!
I liked the package of the Tank XL, but I’m not sure if scaling up the Tank like that was a good idea. Compare it to the Americaine or the Cintrée, which have a considerable lug to lug width and you’ll notice both are curved to follow the wrist. The original Tank (Louis) was and is tiny and therefore does not need to be curved. But when you scale it up, it suddenly becomes a slab with that lack of curvature.
I know what you're saying but I think on a large enough wrist it's still thin enough to lay flat.
@@elizabeth_grant yes, you’ll probably need a very large one for that. I’ve tried on both versions, leather strap and bracelet. On the leather strap it is a bit better, but Santos medium is perfect.
I want to get this for my Mums birthday, her eyesight isnt super great, so thinking I'll get her the large model rather than the medium, I agree with the comment around the investment side of Cartier, it doesnt appreciate and maybe not even hold, but a watch like this will stay in style for decades to come
Completely agree! I just got my new Cartier Tank Must extra-large with the black leather strap and had tried on the stainless steel strap version too- the black leather version wears so much lighter and smaller on my 15cm wrist and still looks classy. Goes well with my typical black clothing but getting an alternative pink alligator strap to switch things up for the weekend etc. Love how versatile this watch is and even my mum who’s not a watch enthusiast recognises it! Had previously thought about getting the Panthere in Medium (largest size) but the watch face is way too small (and quartz and without date) and the largest Santos with date only comes with the stainless steel strap and wears too large on my wrist. Great video!
Wrong war (in the videos, that was WWII) the tank it was based on is the Renault FT-17 from WWI. What you are getting with the Tank Must small even if it’s quartz is for the first time a replica in shape of the Tank Louis which has stood the test of time design-wise. Great video.
Another excellent video! I own a quartz must de Cartier. It's a beautiful watch, but it's so tiny. I would love to trade it for a Cartier Santos (automatic and stainless or two tone with bracelet). From one of your recent videos, you mentioned that you are leaning toward simple watches and thinner watches. I am in the exact same place with my journey. I don't believe that a date complication is needed. Perhaps that is because I'm retired and can refer to my phone if I really need to know. I think watches with fewer complications are the most elegant. They say the soul of elegance is simplicity. That's why the Patek Philippe Calatrava is the standard for the perfect dress watch. I recently ordered a Rolex OP (green dial) to become my next "grail" watch. I don't dress up as much these days, but the OP is so darn versatile. Like you, I love the thin case and the fact that it's a superlative chronometer. Recently, I bought a Christopher Ward C63 Sealander. It does have a date complication, and looks a lot like the Rolex OP. I love this watch! Unfortunately, I ordered the Rolex from my local AD, and won't receive it for another two years. In the meantime, there are a few other watches that I am considering until it arrives.
Agree with your comments...Dumont or Santos is the best path, but it's all very personal. "I couldn't even imagine myself wearing a watch with a date at the 4'oclock." This says so much about you and your preferences...just awesome!
The Santos is a great watch. But it's almost DOUBLE the price for the exact same movement. That is a bit strange if you ask me.
IT's about the same as Vacheron putting a movement used in cheaper Cartier watches into their entry level 56 three hander. It's a $10k price for a $5 watch...
Great job! I owned a rose gold Tank Louis XL last year, and even for my 7” wrist, it was too large. I currently have a Santos Galbee XL in my possession that I’m comparing to a medium Santos de Cartier. I’m going to decide which to keep tomorrow. 🤔
Does it have the quick switching ability to go from bracelet to strap? Nice video, I like that you don't mince words.
Yes
Before you write off the Tank XL as too big, try it on a strap. I originally got mine on the bracelet and it did feel large. I recently got the strap and it feels like an entirely different watch. It doesn't feel anywhere near as big on the strap as on the bracelet.
Are you interested in selling the bracelet at all? I got mine with the strap and I love it, but I really want to get the bracelet too. I have a large wrist(about 7 3/4”, 20cm) , so I’m not concerned about it feeling too big
@@stealdst LOL, no. It's a quick change system so I like the freedom to go back and forth easily.
I would like to see the smaller sized tanks with mechanical movement and no seconds hand. But that’s not something Cartier makes right now. Honestly I’d rather buy a quartz just for the fact that it doesn’t have seconds hand. I agree that the price seems too steep for what you get and the depreciation on the second hand market is the proof.
Awesome review! Glad I found your channel.
I was pondering a Santos medium but having seen one it looks just a tad too much bling for me, I'm sure it's great for other people but I don't think I could carry it off. Now the Must XL with the same movement is certainly worth me having a look at.
The date box in place of upside down numeral VI runes an otherwise perfect dial. Leaves a swath of white space at the bottom that kills the dial’s symmetry.
Just bought this today on the leather strap. It's beautiful.
Great review, thank you. Watch seems beautiful, just don't know if I could pull it off. Some dress watches I try on, I look in the mirror and see a tool bag pretending to be someone they're not. And I wear a suit or sport jacket and tie sometimes. Go figure.
😂
Thanks for this review! I was going to go for the Dumont on aesthetics, but the Tank XL seems to be the no brainer with the same movement as the Santos. Odd indeed!
I have been thinking about the Tank Solo XL for a long time and have been going back and forward and I have probably watched every youtube review about it. I have tried it on a metal bracelet witch felt nice but I still prefer the leather bracelet on a watch like this, but in the end I dont know if it is one of the watches I want to own but get tired of in a short time. I usually buy vintage watches but this has been on my mind for a way to long time, maybe I'll have to buy this as a new watch from the retailer instead of second hand as I usually buy.
In response to your challenge, I give you the Tudor Black Bay GMT. Functionally, its travelers GMT movement operates identically to a Rolex GMT Master II even though it’s admittedly not as well decorated (but unless you’re a watchmaker does it matter, since you can’t see it anyway?). The design is essentially the same as the GMT Master II as well, with the only real compromises being an aluminum bezel instead of ceramic and a bit of added thickness, though it’s really no worse than most automatic chronographs. In exchange, you can: 1) actually find and buy it, and 2) save something like $16K over what the GMT Master II is currently going for. Plus you get an extra 100M of WR over the Rolex. That’s why I made it a belated 35th birthday gift to myself at the beginning of last month.
I happened to be with my Dad at the time…he wound up getting a Clé, which is actually a really nice option from Cartier if you don’t love rectangular watches.
Those rectangular and square watch sizes from Santos, tanks and Santos Dumont are sure a headache especially for ppl staying away from Cartier boutiques -_- but yeah personally I d think of the solar tank as an option cause I really like the tank solo design
I like having a date complication on an every day or even 3-4x a week watch, but if it's an every-so-often watch I couldn't care less. I also really like the triple calendar complication, which would have to be worn often enough for me to want to keep it wound.
Nice vid. My problem with the date window is the mix of Roman and Arabic numerals.
I got the exact model. Any idea where to get the right leather strap? Thanks.
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed the education. My wife seem to like the americaine tank. Wishing they were more videos in that specific watch.
I see the LG model in a positive light. As a dress watch, quartz (with no ticking second hand) is a benefit as you don't have to wind every time you put on the watch. And no date? I like that too. This piece is probably one of the only times I'd ever say that. Smaller size definitely suits it better. With the quartz piece, you still get the fit, finish, and the iconic design. Plus that brand name is nice too. I am still undecided, but the decision between the LG and XL is a lot closer than I would have expected. Only thing I have to weigh is price differential.
Ok. Love your video and right on the money. I have the same watch and love it. I really liked your approach and thinking same with you. Thank you for this video and keep up the the good content.
Thank you, will do !
A good look into this watch...
Date is not aligned properly, i m afraid. Tks for the vid.
Shhhhhh stop telling everyone! Cartier will pump the price... This is my next watch!
Cool choice!
Your macro shots are amazing! Great review & my sentiments exactly. I simply don’t dress up enough to justify a watch like Cartier produces. I’d rather have a sports watch that I can swap the band on, & wear with a suit a few times a year.
Perfectly understandable.
It really can depend on what your wardrobe is. For people who take style with some level of seriousness in their wardrobe, the Cartier tank goes with so many types of outfits. If you want to wear what is it they call it, "streetwear" or whatever, then probably not.
But in the end, streetwear is a trend. Cartier watches are classic timeless style. Since upgrading my wardrobe and spending the effort (and money) on better clothing, tailoring and footwear, I find classic style watches like this really are very complimentary.
@@JayandSarah I could probably daily wear a Santos with business-casual attire; I feel like a Tank is just a bit more classy. It probably would work, though!
The larger space on the right of the date window is something I can’t get passed. To me the tank looks much better without a date
I just found you, what a lovely lady who loves what I love... just subscribed
I purchased the Pasha 35 Steel for my wife’s 40th birthday. It has the 1847 in House movement, and 100 meters water resistant. It’s also quite beautiful in my opinion, and a Gerald Genta design. Also comes with the bracelet and strap. She loves it, but now wants a GMT Master 2… because why should I be the only one with ROLEX!
That's a great watch she has.
@@elizabeth_grant Thank you. She loves it. Great Channel. Keep it up. You have an element of elegance and appeal, and are very fluid and articulate in your delivery. And the photography/videography are stellar. Very enjoyable to watch.
@@jp8950 Thank you so much, I work hard at this. It's nice when people notice.
@@elizabeth_grant The genre we’re so passionate about, horology, represents one of the last vestiges of human excellence. Unfortunately, technology has replaced the necessity of honing one’s craft, in whatever passion and art, one may have. This I believe is what draws many of us, to the world of luxury watches, and evokes a long lost passion of artistic expression in all of us, void of technological interference. Your hard work and dedication are apparent, and irrespective of anyone’s opinion, including mine, you should be very proud of what you’ve accomplished. After all, in life, our only true competition, is our self.
Very cool watch!
I may have missed it but how big is your wrist?
Just under 6 inches.
Excellent content 👏🏼
Very nice video. Excellent work.
Thank you very much!
The Cartier Tank Solarbeat Large brings in a more balanced sizing than the small and XL and also a good value.
The large doesn’t have the guilloche dial like the XL, but you can’t tell that it’s a quartz due to not having a seconds hand. Also with the Solarbeat, you have a 16 year interval of changing the quartz movement compared to the 2-3 year interval of a normal quartz.
Of all watch brands, for me anyways Cartier watches with quartz movements are perfectly fine. As long as that seconds hand is not there.
Also, the small are really small - I got a Tank Francaise and a Tank Solarbeat as gifts for loved ones and I opted for Large for both.
Great video overall!
All of this might be true, but good luck procuring one.
Not a problem as we speak lots about quartz is machine made and readily available even Cartier I do agree with your assessment of quartz the mechanical movement is not so great either if you compare but you are paying for the Cartier brand like most watches that are high end you pay a ridiculous price for an omega or Rolex quartz as well it depends on your needs
I watched an unhealthy amount of Cartier vids one day. I was soon convinced that I had to own one and totally bought into the story, hype, whatever. Luckily I didn’t have the cash and in a few days the hypnosis wore off. I still love them and would love to own one, but it’s not a…..Must now. 😐 I’ll let myself out.
Great review and I have the same thoughts as you. 👍🏼
Cool, thanks!
Love your video, fan from India
Fantastic review you nailed again beauty 👌
I always admired the Tank but if I’m buying a rectangular watch I’d much rather have JL reverso. And I agree, the value is tough as compared to other alternatives.
The Reverso is one of my favorites.
@@elizabeth_grant it was designed for polo players, but I’m sure you are aware of that. I don’t have a reverso, but I do have two JL Atmos clocks.
And i would say the Reverso is not comparable to the Tank. They are so different and for me the Reverso is the more Iconic and versatile watch.
Talks about the WWI French tanks, at 1:57 shows a German, possibly SS, Second World War tank, along with other German heavy equipment.
That error caught my eye as well. Obviously she isn't a Tank Girl and doesn't realize the British mk1 tank was the inspiration for this Cartier watch case design. For most people all tanks look similar enough. A big metal box with two tracks. I am willing to guess youtubes most knowledgeable Tank Girl 'Sofilein' doesn't know much about the finer details of wrist watch history or designs. A small and forgivable error for a watch ⌚ specialist.
I sold my Santos due to the size and, well, the value seemed overrated. I do love the tank, but the water resistance or lack thereof has prevented me from pulling the trigger. I enjoyed your review, and look forward to more material. Cheers.
It’s a dress watch.
Very well said
Mine has increased almost $1000 in value since purchase tho
I like it.
هل من المعقول أن تكون ساعة بمثل هذا السعر وليست ضد الماء في الحقيقة هذه مهزلة
what's your wrist size?

Love how people say a 4100$ watch is affordable...

This looks better with a leather strap.
Got it… but for $5k lol

Do you have a boyfriend? :)
I don't want a date or second. just hour minute n moon.

You look a bit like Margot Robbie
I don't see that but it's nice that you do.
