Korra is so sheltered all her life. She’s like a naive country girl going to the big cities for the first time. She probably never had any press training before as well. Tough for a teen to handle.

People in and out of universe like to give Korra a hard time for not being as good of an Avatar as Aang. In some ways, that's fair: they're both Avatars, and Korra is having a lot of trouble.
In other ways, however, it's not a fair comparison. Their situations, an the problems they had/have to deal with, are very, very different. Aang's task as the Avatar was a simple one: defeat the Firelord and bring an end to the war. Note that I said 'simple,' not 'easy.' He struggled, a lot, but Aang largely didn't have to deal with politics, the press, or keeping people happy. And the few times he did, it largely didn't go well for him.
I'm not saying that Aang was a bad Avatar, far from it; he accomplished amazing things. But I do feel that people, both in and out of universe again, tend to put Aang on a pedestal (literally, in the case of the giant statue of him in the bay), and gloss over the mistakes and bad decisions he made.
Korra is very far from perfect, but like Aang, she's doing her best.
"thats toxic. she already said no." the bare min but we gotta love a respectable aege
Imo Ozai is a really good contextual villain. He might not do that much, but everything around him; the implications, the family drama, the impact he's had on other characters and the world, the showcase of what generations of warmongering can do to a country and its leaders, makes him an amazing part of the story. But, not so much as a character of his own. He remains as a "part", and a good device, to elevate the plot and other characters (Like Azula and Zuko) to be incredible. Put him on his own and he's just kinda meh. In a way, i don't think i view him as a villain character, he's more like a villain figurehead.. a good figurehead tho lol
Amon on the other hand is a really good villain character, he can hold his own in the story and don't need the context in the same way Ozai does. I don't think that makes Ozai bad, it just make them created for different purposes. Like, i think Zhao or Azula may be more fair comparisons, as their function in the story is more similar to Amon.
Idk, im not a writer, its just how i've come to understand why i like Ozai so much, even tho he don't do very much in the actual series.
i have a lot of opinions on Amon but imma shut up now until the end so i don't spoil lol
Im really excited what your final thoughts on this series is xD
Ozai killed his own father to be fire lord instead of Iroh, wanted to kill his son, throwed his brother in jail. The most scary thing is, this type of people do really exist. And there are planty of them....
Amon is good written character, but he is still a character. Ozai is much closer to real life.
@@cyberwarrior8382 i disagree, there are real life Ozais aswell as real life Amons.
Tyrants and extremists aren't limited to fiction.
I remember reading an interview with Brian about the intentional choice to keep Ozai from being too humanized, as he's supposed to represent the idea of imperialism. So by design, he's kind of just generic evil that wants to spread.
@@thewhatness that and originally, they wanted him to be chasing the avatar throughout the series like a textbook villain, but they realized it didnt make sense for the king of an entire nation to personally be hunting down a single person, that's where the idea of having a banished prince came in.

Never stop praising what deserves to be praised. The animation of LoK is awesome. :)
Animation and music in lok are good but the writing is just probably in the fucking dumpster rotting
@@localhellboi5935 I disagree. Although there's certainly plenty to criticize (underdeveloped side cast, korra's circular character and tedious romantic developments, lore retcons, convenient arc conclusions, etc.), LoK is not a complete trashfire in terms of writing. The themes, villains, and philosophies are very engaging to me, dare I say meaningful, bar S02, the pacing is fine, and the side characters are fun even if they don't get much of an [interesting] arc. Though I certainly love the show more in concept than execution, I'd still give it a 7/10 tbh. Not great, but executed well enough in writing and animation so to not be at the mean. That's just my opinion tho.
So we knew about it at the time so just gonna put this here in case. The first season of Korra was originally a limited series. They were only supposed to get that one season so the pacing was pretty quick.
I really like the end of this episode with Amon. He could of basically ended Korra's life right there by taking her bending, removing a huge obstacle, but he didn't because it doesn't help his overall bigger goal. Also keeps Korra in a state of fear and unable to be her best self.
I'm feelin' Asami... this episode premiered almost 10 years ago, and I'm STILL feelin' Asami!
The frame count for Legend of Korra's episodes is more than 15000 frames per episode. Yup, that is why the animation looks gorgeous.
Korra was raised and trained in a heavily controlled environment, this is her first time dealing with a real ass problem that she couldn’t have been prepared for.
Of course that excuse again , she still hasn't changed even in season 4

On the pacing:
You gotta pay attention too on how both shows are structured. With aang the show was mostly episodic, as in each episode had a mostly closed story where they arrived at some new place something happened they struggle and resolve and the end . With korra is more serial, probably because she isnt traveling 24/7, quite the opposite till this moment, and theres a continuous story throughout the episodes and only this makes the show feels more continuous and dynamic, not that the ATLA style is worse, it's just two styles.
also in atla u had almost only Team Avatar and Zuko's family and it's not like it was bad but simply there wasnt enough interaction with other characters whereas in Korra u have way more of that
Aege singing in the beginning sounded like Sokka telling scary stories in The Puppetmaster
there's 18000 drawings on average per episode for season 1

@@Jay-kx4jf good vid to watch after finishing the series o.o
I went back to this video after watching aege's reaction to this episode! BUT, @ aege dont watch that vid til you've finished the series, like Jae says, is full of spoilers. Once you're done though, I think as an animator you'd really enjoy the breakdown in that video. Also, keep in mind that animation quality of season 1 doesnt continue as amazingly throughout the rest of the show. S1 looks absolutely incredible, but it resulted in extremely overworked staff and it just wasnt fair or sustainable to keep up.
Thank you for recommending this. I'm sick of seeing nothing but hate for a genuinely good show, so it feels good to see positive Korra vibes.
They writers in this show decided to go a little darker than Last Airbender for this series, and they know how to write a villain once they got access to some other subjects. Amon is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
THIS SHOW IS LITERALLY NOT MATURE NOR DARK avatar had way darker shit than lok just because yea lok is going about politics but they just write that in a very childish way , anyway going back for searching some intelligent lifeforms that have at least half a brain cell to realize how much of a shit show it is
@@localhellboi5935 I would put in some examples but I ain't spoiling anything on a channel that is 4 episodes into the series, I never said ATLA wasn't dark, I said this one was darker, and if you don't think having a cult essentially gang jump you in the dark horror style for a show previously meant for children isn't dark then idk what to tell you, viciously taking something not meant to be taken the last episode, how about the ending of this season? (Again no spoilers but if you know you know) season 2? Crazy things. Season 3? Hoooooooo boy the "This isn't a kids show" counter skyrockets in that one" And season 4 was while a little more mild, still had dark themes.
I won't deny that Korra has its light moments, but blatantly just saying it isn't dark without sound reasoning and more of an opinionated point of view all caps comment and insults at the end of your bit ain't how you have a discussion.
22:40 the pacing is this way bc nickelodeon actually only wanted one season, that’s why they pretty much wrapped it up in 12-14 episodes. then the show was received very well and they wanted more seasons but they still had to keep them pretty short (compared to atla that had like 24 episodes per season)

From what i've seen of other animators talking about this show, it does seem to be one of the things where people throw it out as "oh yeah the crazy show where they did it on ones", like people appreciate it a lot but they also treat it like an exception to the rule and a level of quality you can't really expect from other studios. It makes sense though because I believe this was the first project Studio Mir worked on so it's almost like a portfolio piece for the studio of them just flexing and showing what they're capable of.

About the frame count on both series (ATLA and TLOK), ATLA had roughly 3 to 4 thousand frames per episode, whereas Korra has about 15 to 20 thousand. That's why TLOK seems A LOT better and smoother in terms of animation! They went all in, which allow us to appreciate the martial art segments a lot more! Hahahahah

The first season was originally planned as the only season, so the pace is definitely fast. Each season is almost like its own movie, in a series, they can somewhat stand alone story.

Korra is very predictable. and where it wasnt that is because the writers didnt know what they were doing.
From another great ATLA and TLOK reaction team, Yaboiroshi: never trust a playa with three ponytails.
In my opinion, they made the right decision making Ozai how he is. You don't want to flesh out the final boss, it'll just make you feel wrong fighting them, but they can, on the other hand, flesh out mini bosses like Long feng, Bozo and Azula.
This first season is the best the series ever looked. It's like watching an OVA or a mini series. I think they billed it as a one season one-shot at first if I remember right, which is why things are moving at a clip and it feels like every episode has budget to spare. Amon definitely is an antagonist to fear. Between him and a later squad, I'm tied on which I like more. I do agree with you on liking really liking the deeper exploration of what bender vs non-bender means in a modern society.
People can say what they want about this show, but they cannot deny Amon's badassery and just amazing character development, here and in the future

Ozai worked for the message they were trying to tell. I won't write out my analysis assignment for that, but he served the purpose to match the theme of Aang's journey.
Amon is perfect for the theme that they are going for here and later for the overall series. Here, Korra defines herself as this kickass warrior who revels in her bending. So to her, Amon is the most terrifying thing because he can take away what she feels is important to her. If Aang were to face Amon, Aang would still be scared of him, but Aang has enough of a spiritual sense of who he is that is defined by more than his physical abilities as the Avatar.

@@toamszkozak8822 I wouldnt agree with fights. Despite having a better animation in a "technical" sense and style, the fights always felt very lackluster to me and devoid of character and charm. @@CheerUp2 I was impressed numerous times, maybe even more than atla
As others mentioned, it really wouldn't make much sense for Ozai to be personally involved with fucking with Aang because he's basically the king of a nation, why would he personally go out and antagonize the avatar? Plus as a leader of a highly militarized imperialist nation that also explains his "motives" pretty much, same as literally any other imperialist nation, and he'd be heavily guarded, it wouldn't make too much sense for him to be constantly interacting with Aang and have it not be the final fight, especially since early on Aang's final goal is established as defeating Ozai. How is Aang even gonna get to Ozai in the first place and why would he if he weren't prepared to take him out? Between him being the leader of a nation and his defeat being established as the goal of the protagonist I don't really see any way of having Aang and Ozai interact in a way that makes sense, I feel like it makes sense that the first time they interact really is THE confrontation, not just some thing where Ozai fucks with him and Aang runs off or something.
