Yeaaah, to this day I can't forgive what they did to my mans Bolin. What really got me was that they made his reaction to Korra and Mako's kiss comedic rather than serious. Made it seem like his feelings were lesser compared to everyone else's imo.
Well, when Bolin was first introduced, he was presented as this ladies' man; both him and Mako thought Korra was "another of his fangirls that he brought back stage". So, it's supposed to be funny when he gets all devastated at being passed over for his broody brother.

If Sokka was all jokes, he wouldn’t be nearly as popular as he is. That’s why I say that the writers seemed not to understand what made Sokka so great when they created Bolin. The depth is missing.
Love interest: "I am feeling confused." Avatar: I have no idea what that means I better kiss you! People hate the love entanglements, but they are teenagers!! That is what happens. I have raised kids and I teach at a middle school/high school as well as at a college. And the teens I teach are really like this. It is real.
Korra, even though dropping the ball in this episode, has some character redeeming moments that people seem to overlook. She shows really strong characteristics imo.
In Korra's defence she was raised in the compound, with no friends or social skills, so her being kind of a wildling and doing things that are unacceptable in society, like trying to steal someone's boyfriends by an adult's shitty advise is justifiable to a point. In Mako's partial defense he grew up holding his feelings back and trying to be tough on the streets to protect his brother, and sometimes you don't realize your own feelings for someone until they confess to you their own (speaking of experience). But indecisiveness between Korra and Asami is still shitty on his part.
I would say it’s understandable for Korra, not justified. Justified implies that the action was okay, which it definitely was not. Understandable means that the reasons behind the action are decent, even if they or the action aren’t right. What Korra did, chasing after Mako and kissing him when he said he might sorta like her a bit, was not okay by any means, but we can still understand why she may have done it.
I remember when these episodes of season one first aired I was really not into it. And as an adult I’m still not crazy for them but I can at least be more appreciative of the context which these situations happen due to the flaws of the characters themselves that have already been pre-established.
Mako knew Bolin liked Korra. Bolin didn't know Mako liked Korra also. Bolin had dibs. That's a bro code lol. If he'll do that to his own brother he'll do that to anybody.
They are all teens and this is all stuff that might happen when all of them are good looking. The ages in this season: Bolin: 16 Korra: 17 Mako: 18 Asami: 18
Don't know if you noticed but whenever Korra is healing bolin and the wolfbats are having their match if you listen you can hear the bell for each round while Korra is talking to Bolin

I always got the feeling that the early introduction of love interest and relationships might've been part of why so many people thought Korra was a bad series. Like there were some love subplots in ATLA, but they were a bit more subtle and took their time.
I see it more as bitchy than anything else. Mako is the big trash here, but Korra is the smaller trash. She knew that he had a girlfriend, whom she had actually met personally.
