This series is extremely underrated. It needs to be talked about more because not only it covers the cultural aspect of obscure province around Asia, it also covers the social aspect and bringing awareness of the reality of how this part of the world lives. I just hope they get at least a good payment out of this and not just being exploited for content
Love this! These people are so lovely. They value family, hard work, living simple, and enjoy their life. It did break my heart to see the first couple and how the man worked in tourism and how he missed it so much. He was so very kind and sweet. I really loved him and his wife.
No I don’t think they really mean it’s a slum hence the millionaire…all the episodes seem to show amazing people cooking and living life in a bit more poor environment
OMG, it's not slum food, but it's fancy food! Look at that crab curry, stir-fried ray with chili paste and spicy giant snail salad, I really want that and I'm sure that it's very delicious!
They all look incredible and like the taste is to die for! In any "cosmopolitan" city in the world, any of the dishes made in this video would be priced at at least $25-$30 USD++ - and that's a conservative spectrum, given what restauranteurs are happy to charge these days. Blame it on labour costs or even modern day greed... but to put things into perspective, $30 USD converts to about $1000+ THB. You would be able to purchase at the very least, 20kgs of rice for that amount in Koh Klang. Certainly food for thought.
I was really shocked when they took 30 years to pay off the boat, maybe not 1,500 Baht per month for 30 years, that amount can buy you a Huge Double deck fishing boat in Thailand 🇹🇭
Why use the pejorative term slum? These are kampongs/villages with every day people living simple lives, finding their happiness and satisfaction wherever they can. They value family, relationships, excellent food, serving others and hard work. I admire them ☺️
Tbh I think it is good to use the word and show something good because it changes how people think when they hear the word slum. Don't get me wrong, there are dangerous places everywhere, but when people call an area a slum they imagine some hellish pit even though communities like the ones shown tend to exist in nearly all of them. Even if they are not friendly to outsiders or just dangerous overall.
Compared to people's daily diet that goes for processed food or highly glucose food, this so-called slum food is way more healthy-along with its delicious taste.
Interesting! I am Thai but never heard of that giant snail salad before. Would really love to try it. It looks rather fancy like sashimi the way she sliced it.
I'm thai and I can tell you that koh klang is not slum. It's the way people living there. Their foods in this video are expensive if they're in restuarant. Actually they have better live than people living in slum in big city. Atleast they eat expensive foods almost every day. Koh klang also has many restuarant at one side of island. People usually take a boat ride about 5 min from mainland to eat fresh seafood at restuarants in koh klang.
The subtitles say "business was not good" But in her words she actually says that the "business did not turn a profit". The preparation was very precise and her methodology was very informed. It's a shame that the lady preparing the dish found running food service in that area was not financially viable as she certainly has the talent and instinct to create outstanding food!
That crab curry looks delicious esp with freshly grated coconut milk. So exhausting thing to do. We used to eat that in our hometown. Now you cant find a good curry dish. Most people nowadays used factory packed coconut paste. Convenient but tasteless. The 2nd lady though, i think she has not achieved the grandma lvl of cooking yet, after putting the garlic accidentally in not yet properly heated frying oil @11:53. You can get scolded for that. 😅. Her fresh catch meal looks mouth-watering though.
It's Southern Thai language. They use different vocabs from the Central Thai (the Bangkok dialect), with completely different accents and intonations. As a Bangkokian, I can only understand about 60-70% of what they said in the video and had to read the English subtitles. 😂
I love that people can just fish a crab or a stingray out of the river and casually eat what's considered a gourmet meal in the us for lunch and it's called a slum 🙃
Slum? Is there something I'm not understanding? These individuals have more wealth than the majority of people in Thailand. The meal they are preparing is typically only available at high-end restaurants. It's virtually impossible to purchase property on that island since it's considered priceless. In today's world, misconceptions and misunderstandings about various issues and events are rampant. One such misunderstanding was captured in a video in which an individual visits a community that was referred to as a "slum." The individual, upon visiting the community, expressed surprise at the living conditions and the apparent wealth of the residents. The person in the video assumed that a "slum" was only meant to be associated with poverty and squalor. However, this assumption is incorrect and can be harmful.
majority of the residents of koh klang are actually the descendants of kelantanese malay from Kelantan located in the Northeast of Peninsular Malaysia..
Astonishing Crab, Ray and Snail delicacies right here and just called it a slumfood :( This is Fine Course Meal worth hundreds of dollars and here is am eating Junk Food while working on a full scale 8 hours a day in 6 days a week. Mehhh.....

This is not a slum, this is the real kampung life
ikr, some ppl are just ignorant and privileged and calls this the slum lol
No I don’t think they really mean it’s a slum hence the millionaire…all the episodes seem to show amazing people cooking and living life in a bit more poor environment
If the children are not getting to attend school, it’s definitely a slum lol.
If they enjoy life and are not starving I don’t consider that a slum. It’s a simple life and I’m pretty sure they’re more happy than most

The guy who previously used to be a boat driver has the kindest face❤❤May God bless his family with abundance and happiness
That fishing boat scene was sick!! Respect to the couple who had to pay this off over 30 years ❤

Thanks CNA for another excellent documentary series!
I feel for that boat driver. He misses doing what he loves. I wish him and his family the best and I hope he still finds happiness in day to day life.
Compared to people's daily diet that goes for processed food or highly glucose food, this so-called slum food is way more healthy-along with its delicious taste.

Thank you for making this series! Its enlightening to see the dishes and stories of the people living there.
I'm finding it difficult to work out what characterises as a slum from this series' descriptions. I would 100% say that this is not a slum.

how could CNA Insider call their food Slum? their food was even more expensive than the food people living in the city used to eat
European superiority complex
More expensive than hotdog
@@mylifeisalie5558 it is from Singapore. If it ain't sinocentric, it is inferior. lol

i would love to try the crab curry!
Wow. Here we can see: They is no way to happiness - beeing happy is the way
Looks delicious. What a simple life.
Does TH have variations with accents too? The people in the video have accents different from what I used to hear from most TH videos.

no... They are native malay (kedahan descent) in Krabi province.. no related to kelantan.
That crab curry is very expensive in rstaurants.
their food was more expensive than ours. This is not a slum.
Now CNA desperately labelled everythings in asia as SLUM. ( Next slum: japan, spore & korea )
That looked tasty.
Slum food but every meal they ate cost around $20-30 USD while people who living in the city are crying for.🤣
Look like Indonesian island/Malay people with Thai language.
that foods look good actually
bruuuh, i could smell it while they are cooking it 😋
i hope they will countinue to live joyful life
aroi mak!
This is real food and expensive one, y called slumfood
How can CRAB and snails be SLUM food ??
this is kampung
CNA simply label a place slum. And whats this got to do with the title slumfood millionaire
Did they know you call their food slumfood?
What i eat everyday was slum than them literally 😅
The last one look like Lou Sang.
Astonishing Crab, Ray and Snail delicacies right here and just called it a slumfood :( This is Fine Course Meal worth hundreds of dollars and here is am eating Junk Food while working on a full scale 8 hours a day in 6 days a week. Mehhh.....
She just chopped those live crabs in half ! Couldn’t watch after that.
Why didn't you let that lady eat pork?
The content is great but can you please make the subtitle size larger.
